Four test pieces with different steel plate center-to-center distances and reinforcement ratios are subjected to low-cycle repeat quasistatic loading to optimize properties as failure mode, hysteretic curve, skeleton curve, energy dissipation parameters, strength parameters, and seismic performance of high-strength concrete low-rise shear walls. The embedded steel plates are shown to effectively restrict wall crack propagation, enhance the overall steel ratio, and improve the failure mode of the wall while reducing the degree of brittle failure. Under the same conditions, increasing the spacing between the steel plates in the steel plate concrete shear wall can effectively preserve the horizontal bearing capacity of the shear wall under an ultimate load. The embedded steel plates perform better than concealed bracing in delaying stiffness degeneration in the low-rise shear walls, thus safeguarding their long-term bearing capacity. The results presented here may provide a workable basis for shear wall design optimization.

To study the antiseismic performance of the high-strength concrete composite shear wall with built-in steel plates, an experiment on a high-strength concrete composite shear wall with four built-in steel plates (SPRCW-1∼4) was set up. Based on the experimental result, the paper discusses the antiseismic performance, failure mode, and failure mechanism of the high-strength concrete composite shear wall with built-in steel plates under different steel ratios and different positions of steel plates. The experimental result has shown that the differences in steel plate position and steel ratios have certain effects on wall cracking. The use of high steel content and the placement of steel plates on both sides of the wall can limit wall cracking to some extent. When the bearing capacity of the steel plates located on both sides of the wall is larger than that in the middle of the wall, a high content of steel in the wall can effectively increase the bearing capacity of the test piece to some extent. Under a high axial compression ratio, the horizontal bar of the wall can substantially limit the vertical cracks in concrete arising from compression. Moreover, the built-in steel plates in the shear wall play a significant role in inhibiting the propaganda of the oblique cracks under the action of earthquakes. The research result has very good economy and operability and can provide a basis for promotion and application of the mid- and high-rise buildings in regions with high seismic intensity.

In order to discuss how the different forms of steel impact on seismic behavior of steel reinforced high-strength concrete(SRHC) L-shape short-pier shear wall, four different steel forms SRHC L-shaped section short-pier shear wall members with low reversed cyclic loading were simulated by ABAQUS. The four steel forms were steel bar, solid-web steel, truss-type steel and hole-type steel. The result show that: different steel forms can significantly impact on the seismic performance of SRHC L-shaped section short-pier shear walls and the seismic capacity range from high to low as follow: with solid-web steel, with hole-type steel, with truss-type steel and reinforced.

This paper mainly focused on the seismic performance and shear calculation method of steel reinforced high-strength concrete (SRHC) columns with rectangular helical hoops. An experimental investigation was performed in this paper. Eleven SRHC columns with rectangular helical hoops and one with ordinary hoops were constructed at the laboratory of Guangxi university. The failure modes, hysteresis loops, envelope curves, characteristic loads and displacements and cumulative damage analysis are presented and investigated. It can be seen from the test results that the failure modes of SRHC columns can be divided into three types with the shear span ratio increased, namely, shear baroclinic failure mode, flexure-shear failure mode and flexure failure mode. In addition, the specimens with rectangular helical hoops have plumper hysteretic loops. Shear span ratio is the main influencing factor of characteristic load; the axial compression ratio and concrete strength have less influence on characteristic load, while stirrup ratio has little effect on the characteristic load. Finally, a calculation method for shear capacity of SRHC columns under shear baroclinic failure and flexure-shear failure mode is proposed.

The shear wall with concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns and steel plate is a new kind of composite shear wall. In order to know its seismic performance and failure mechanism, six 1/5 scale specimens with the same shear span ratio 1.5, including 3 steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) with CFT columns and 3 reinforced concrete shear walls (RCSWs) with CFT columns and embedded steel plate, were tested under cyclic loading. The thickness of the steel plates in the shear walls changed from 2mm, 4mm to 6mm. Based on the experiment, the load-carrying capacity, hysteresis characteristics, ductility, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation and damage characteristics of the specimens were analyzed. Especially, the ratio of height to sectional thickness of the steel plates in the shear wall was considered. The result shows that both the SPSW with CFT columns and the RCSW with CFT columns and embedded steel plate have good seismic performance and are with important practical engineering value.

In order to study the seismic performance of high-strength concrete composite shear walls with embedded steel strips, four tests for high-strength concrete composite shear walls with embedded steel strips (SPRCW-1 to SPRCW-4) were constructed and tested. Based on the test results, a discussion is provided in the present study on the hysteresis curve, backbone curves, and strain of steel plate and distributed reinforcement of high-strength concrete mid-rise and high-rise composite shear walls with embedded steel strips under different steel ratios and different steel strip positions. The test results reveal that in high-strength composite shear walls with embedded steel strips, the ductility of the test specimen can be effectively improved when the ratio of the steel strip reaches a certain level. In parallel, when the embedded steel strip is placed on both sides of the walls, the steel strip can function better. The ultimate displacement is better than when the steel strip is placed in the middle of the walls, and can effectively improve the seismic performance of the walls. The scheme with embedded steel strips is more convenient and economical for construction, which is suitable for popularization and application in middle-high buildings in highly seismic regions.

In order to improve the lateral deformation capacity of the high strength concrete shear wall, partially confined end-zones are usually set in the both ends of the shear wall cross-section. According to the experimental results of 15 high strength concrete shear walls with flexural (flexural-shear) failure, the moment - curvature skeleton curve of this shear wall cross-section is simplified as four linear through cracking point, yield point, peak point and ultimate point. Based on the plane-section assumption, the bending moment and curvature expressions at cracking, yield, peak and ultimate state are derived. At the same time, the effect of partially confined end-zones on peak and ultimate moment-curvature are taken into account. The analysis results show that, the calculated values are in good consistent with the experimental data.

Shear walls are effective lateral load resisting elements in high-rise buildings. This paper presents an experimental study of the seismic performance of a composite shear wall system that consists of high-strength concrete walls with the embedded steel plate. Two sets of wall specimens with different aspect ratios (height/width, 1.5 and 2.7) were constructed and tested under quasi-static reversed cyclic loading, including five reinforced concrete shear walls (RCSW) and six reinforced concrete-steel plate shear walls (RCSPSW). The progression of damage, failure modes, and load-displacement responses of test specimens were studied and compared based on experimental observations. The test results indicated that high-strength (HS) RCSPSW system showed superior lateral load strength and acceptable deformation capability. The axial compressive load was found to have an indispensable effect on the ductility of both RCSW and RCSPSW, and an upper limit of axial compression ratio (0.5) is recommended for the application of HS RCSPSW in engineering practices. In addition, the design strength models were suggested for predicting the shear and flexure peak strength values of RCSPSW systems, and their applicability and reliability were verified by comparing with test results.

Based on the experimental study of normal-section bearing capacity of four steel reinforced high-strength concrete (SRHC) L-shape short pier shear walls with two-way eccentric compressive load, this thesis discussed the failure pattern and working mechanism and get some general laws about normal-section baring capacity of this kind of specimens. The research results show that: the failure pattern of SRHC L-shape short pier shear wall with two-way eccentric compressive load is classified into two types-large eccentric compression and small eccentric compression; the sectional strain basically fit the plane-section assumption; steel and concrete can practically work cooperatively until the specimens are damaged and the steel of compressive region yielded; the normal section baring properties of the perforated frame member and the trussed frame member were fairly close to each other and the trussed frame has no advantage compared with the perforated one.

To study the seismic performance of embedded polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe confined reinforced high-strength concrete (PVC-RHC) columns, five specimens are designed for cyclic loading test, which include three PVC-RHC column specimens, an embedded circle steel tube confined reinforced high-strength concrete (CST-RHC) column specimen, and a reinforced high-strength concrete (RHC) column specimen. The failure mechanism and morphology are revealed by experiments. The influences of PVC pipe diameter, axial compression ratio, and concrete strength on seismic performance indexes are analyzed. The research results indicate thhe following: all specimens displayed shear baroclinic failure. Compared with RHC specimens, the hysteretic curves of the PVC-RHC specimen and CST-RHC specimen were fuller; furthermore, their energy dissipation capacity, deformation, and ductility were more beneficial. With the increase of the diameter–length ratio and axial pressure, the energy dissipation capacity and deformation capacity of PVC-RHC specimens decreased. The shear bearing capacity of the PVC-RHC specimen calculated with “concrete structure design code” (GB 50010-2010) was smaller than the test results by 25%, showing an excessive safety margin. Thus, according to the failure mechanism of the PVC-RHC specimen, a new calculation formula of shear bearing capacity is deduced, which is in good agreement with the experimental results.
