The seismic response of reinforced concrete (RC) plan-asymmetric structures is significantly influenced by the input angle of seismic ground motions. Hence, it is challenging to assess the performance of plan-asymmetric structures. In this study, the classic probabilistic seismic fragility assessment method is used to assess RC plan-asymmetric wall-frame structures based on the enhanced damage model. First, the worst-case input angle of seismic ground motions for plan-asymmetric structures is identified using the wavelet transforms coefficient method, considering the coupling of bidirectional seismic ground motions. Accordingly, the maximum deformation and hysteretic energy dissipation can be determined. Then, an enhanced damage model, which is based on the combination of deformation and hysteretic energy dissipation, is used to identify floor damage factor. Note that the importance coefficients of structural components are considered in the identification. Meanwhile, the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) is conducted to create the fragility curves by assuming floor damage factor as seismic performance index. In particular, the randomness of the threshold for floor damage factor is considered during the assessment. Afterwards, numerical simulations are employed to verify the fragility assessment method. Results show that the wavelet transforms coefficient method can evaluate the worst-case input angles with low time-consuming and high efficiency. Meanwhile, the story damage factors confirmed that the proposed damage model could accurately assess the structure during the failure process. Moreover, the typical failure modes of the RC wall-frame structure, which significantly depend on the story damage distribution, can be defined using the enhanced damage model. Note that the randomness of the threshold could significantly affect the probability of exceedance, which is important for fragility analysis.

Abstract. Seismic fragility analysis is essential for seismic risk assessment of structures. This study focuses on the damage probability assessment of the mid-story isolation buildings with different locations of the isolation system. To this end, the performance-based fragility analysis method of the mid-story isolation system is proposed, adopting the maximum story drifts of structures above and below the isolation layer and displacement of the isolation layer as performance indicators. Then, the entire process of the mid-story isolation system, from the initial elastic state to the elastic-plastic state, then to the limit state, is simulated on the basis of the incremental dynamic analysis method. Seismic fragility curves are obtained for mid-story isolation buildings with different locations of the isolation layer, each with fragility curves for near-field and far-field ground motions, respectively. The results indicate that the seismic fragility probability subjected to the near-field ground motions is much greater than those subjected to the far-field ground motions. In addition, with the increase of the location of the isolation layer, the dominant components for the failure of mid-story isolated structures change from superstructure and isolation system to substructure and isolation system.

Through the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake or the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, much larger earthquakes are considered recently in the seismic designs of large steel-frame structures. When structures are exposed by these severe ground motions, partial destructions in the structures, such as damage or fracture of members could happen. Especially, the low cycle fatigue of steel structures because of the repeated load from these long-term ground motions is a serious problem. However, current seismic performance evaluation method based on nonlinear dynamic analysis considers only elastic and plastic deformation of each member, excluding the fracture of members. If this member fracture happens during earthquakes, there is considered to be many effects on the seismic performance, like the changes of the vibration property, the dynamic response and the energy absorbance capacity of structures. Therefore, the fracture of members is preferably taken into account in the seismic performance evaluation for these large earthquakes. This paper proposes the dynamic analysis method for steel-frame structures which can express the member fracture. Dynamic analyses considering and not considering member fracture under the repeated loads supposing the long-term earthquake are conducted to the FEM model of full-scale structure. By comparing each result, the effects of considering member fracture to the seismic performance such as the dynamic response and the energy absorbance capacity are discussed.
