Concerns have been increased regarding the existence of pollutants in environmental water resources and their risks to the ecosystem and human society. TiO2 photocatalyst is considered as an effective photocatalyst to remove the pollutants. Herein, the mesoporous TiO2-SBA-15 was prepared using the rice husk extract as the silica source. The fabricated nanocomposites were characterized using FTIR, small and wide angle XRD, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis, BET surface area analysis, and HRTEM. The photocatalytic efficiency of the composites for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) has been evaluated under UV irradiation. Interestingly, due to the excellent dispersion of TiO2 on the wall of SBA-15 and good hydrophilicity, the nanocomposites displayed a good catalytic activity. The higher photodegradation performance was achieved by the composite containing 10 wt% TiO2 by which the MB was fully degraded within 15-20 min of irradiation. Besides, TiO2-SBA-15 could effectively inhibit the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. These results offer a practical and economic approach in the environmental management industries.

Eggshells and rice husk, two types of notable agricultural waste were used as bioadsorbent to remove Methylene Blue dye (MBD) in aqueous solution. This study was to investigate the performance of these two bioadsorbents in removing MBD. The removal percentage, adsorption capacity, and porosity characterization were examined. The method applied was a physical filtration. UV-VIS Spectrophotometer was used to determine the efficiency of the bioadsorbents in MBD adsorption. The highest removal percentage at the most concentrated MBD were 51% and 98% for eggshells and rice husks respectively. Meanwhile the characterization of rice husks pore size and volume proves that higher adsorptivity towards dye compares to eggshells porosity. It was concluded that the eggshells and rice husks bioadsorbents was successful to treat industrial textile wastewater with rice husks as the most efficient bioadsorbent in removing MBD.

Carbon-titanium oxide nanocomposite (denoted as @C-TiO2) was successfully synthesized via hydrothermal method at 150°C for 24 h. The C-TiO2 nanocomposite was furtherly modified by adding an Ag metal dopant (denoted as Ag@C-TiO2) to improve and applied to the photocatalytic degradation of Sasirangan textile wastewater. The composite photocatalysts were characterized by XRD and UV–Vis DRS spectroscopies. XRD patterns showed that TiO2 in @C-TiO2 mainly consisted of a brookite phase, as indicated by a series sharp diffraction peak at 2θ = 27.2° (111), 31.5° (121) and 55.9° (241). The calculated band gap energy (Eg) derived from UV-Vis DRS spectra for TiO2, @C-TiO2, and Ag@C-TiO2 were 2.95 eV, 2.54 eV, and 2.74 eV, respectively. Ag@C-TiO2 photocatalyst was found to be active for the photocatalytic degradation of Sasirangan textile wastewater, as indicated by the change of wastewater color from dark to clear. The quantitative photocatalytic activity of Ag@C-TiO2 was evaluated in the degradation of methylene blue, whereas the conversion of methylene blue was 41.3%. The addition of Ag to @C-TiO2 is believed to play an essential role in the enhancement of photocatalytic activity.

In this study, nano-sized low cost titanium dioxide (TFS) was prepared using sludge from sewage treatment and performance was verified. To remove air pollutants, the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and efflorescence characteristics is assessed according to the mixing ratio of the nano-sized TFS by applying them to concrete sidewalk blocks. The photocatalytic degradation performance of concrete sidewalk blocks shows that the methylene blue removal rate of specimens containing 2.5%, 5%, and 10% of nano-sized TFS is 29%, 27%, and 38%, respectively. When the nano-sized TFS is mingled on the surface of the sidewalk block, the performance of anti-corrosion and antifouling showed excellency mainly due to the moisture blocking derived by the antifouling function of photocatalysts.

Controlling water pollution are huge challenges throughout the world especially concerning pharmaceutical pollutants. Common practices at industrial wastewater treatment facilities need to be upgraded with advanced wastewater treatment techniques. TiO2 based photocatalytic processes have shown great potential for removal of these aqueous pharmaceutical pollutants. Reverse micelle based modified sol-gel method is utilized for the synthesis of TiO2 nanomaterial. Generated reverse micelle nanodomains have controlled size and particle size distribution (PSD) of synthesized TiO2 nanomaterial, as revealed by SEM and DLS analysis. Thermal behaviour of synthesized sample is characterized by TGA analysis. TiO2 photocatalyst is also characterized through XRD, BET surface area, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. TiO2 photocatalyst is used for degradation of three model pharmaceutical pollutants viz. Levofloxacin hemihydrate (LFX), Metronidazole (MNZ) and Ketorolac tromethamine (KRL) under a UV light source. Reverse micelle mediated modified sol-gel method synthesized TiO2 nanomaterial has shown excellent photocatalytical performance, where degradation efficiency of LFX, KRL and MNZ were found to be 99.6%, 98% and 91.4% respectively within a little as 60 minutes.

Ferrosilicon alloy has been commercially produced in an electric furnace at 1700 - 1750 °C, using quartz as a silica source. With an aim to reduce production cost, rice husk ash (RHA) had been introduced to the process as a silica source. The present study reports an in-depth investigation on the ferrosilicon alloy formation at 1550 °C via carbothermic reduction using RHA with coal and graphite. Blend A: RHA/Fe2O3/Coal and B: RHA/Fe2O3/Graphite were prepared according to the C/O molar ratio of 1/1. The well-mixed samples were compacted into a pellet and then heated at 1550 °C in the tube furnace for 30 and 60 minutes while the argon flowing at the rate of 1 L/min. XRD and SEM results show that the bulk metal mainly composes of FeSi phase, while SiC and other slag phases adhere at the surface of the droplet. Characteristics of the carbonaceous materials, especially ash oxides content affect the kinetic of ferrosilicon formation. Silicon concentration in the produced metal droplets was measured using an ICP technique. For blend A, Si content in the metal was 18.3 wt% and 81.9 wt% after 30 and 60 minutes, respectively. While, Si recovery in the metal for blend B reached 88.4 wt% since 30 minutes. The experimental results show that the production of ferrosilicon alloy from RHA can be produced at 1550 °C, which the temperature lower than that of the commercial method by 150-200 °C. The finding in this research is beneficial for ferrosilicon and agricultural industries and thus promotes the sustainable steelmaking industry.
