The University of São Paulo, founded in 1934, started under the influence of important foreigners academicians in our campuses. The beginning of our university was the result of a fusion of the already existing colleges – Law School, School of Engineering, School of Pharmacy and Dentistry, College of Agriculture, Medical School, and School of Veterinary Medicine. In addition, in 1934, the School of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters was created being responsible for human sciences – Philosophy, History, Geography, Sociology – and hard sciences – Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry – that academically amalgamated the professional existing colleges. In the thirties, we benefited from the instabilities in Europe and important professors came to the University of São Paulo contributing remarkably to our successful trajectory.[...]

ABSTRACTFrom the point of view of literary theory and comparative literature, this article aims to analyze how it is configured the narrative of life of a patient of the General and Didactic Clinic of the University of São Paulo School of Medicine, in the context of a consultation with the resident who attends her, and how that narrative is reconfigured by the same resident, both in the conversation with her assistant and at the resumption of the consultation with the patient, in which diagnostic hypotheses, predictions and treatments will be transmitted. The analysis undertaken here is based mainly on the concepts of prefiguration, configuration and refiguration established by Paul Ricoeur in his book Time and Narrative (2010); narrator and narrative point of view, as in Arrigucci Jr. (1998) and Friedman (2002); and the cultural aspects of the comic genre, as in Aristotle (s/d), Darnton (1996), Bakhtin (1999) and Baudelaire (2002).

Literatura e periferia na cidade de São Paulo shows how urban peripheral communities of the city, often all referred to erroneously as favelas in the media, are spaces where cultural and literary production flourish. A professor of literature at the University of Buenos Aires with a background in anthropology, Tennina combines literary analysis with first-person interviews to effectively counter popular discourses that associate these communities solely with criminality and drug trafficking.

Abstract. The Colônia Deep Drilling Project held its first International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) workshop in September 2014 at the University of São Paulo (Brazil). Twenty-seven experts from six countries discussed the feasibility and the expectations of a deep drilling in the structure of Colônia located at the southwestern margin of the city of São Paulo. After presenting the studies performed at the site during the last decades, participants focused on the objectives, priorities and detailed planning for a full deep-drilling proposal. An excursion to the site and new auger coring showed the importance of the Colônia site for studying the evolution of a tropical rainforest and to evaluate the interplay between the South American summer monsoon, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the southern Westerlies belt during the last 5 million years. In addition, deep drilling will eventually solve the still unresolved issue of the origin of the structure of Colônia as a result of meteorite impact or endogenous processes.

The occurrence of Toxoplasma antibodies in domestic outpatient cats in the city of São Paulo was evaluated using the indirect immunofluorescence assay. A total of 248 blood samples obtained from male and female cats seen at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of São Paulo between February 1996 and January 1997 were tested. Of these, 17.7% were positive, with a 64 titer being detected in most animals. The frequence of Toxoplasma antibodies was significantly higher in older cats, those fed raw meat and those with free access to the outdoor environment. There was no significant difference in reactivity between males and females. We conclude that diet and free access to the outdoor environment were equally important as predisposing factors to the risk of Toxoplasma infection.
