 In autumn and winter, 24 migratory waterfowl species from the north utilise the wetlands of Chitwan National Park, which provide vital staging, roosting, resting, foraging and breeding places. The birds stay for about eight months before returning north in March and April. These birds are indicators of healthy wetlands, and they distribute nutrients through their droppings that increase primary production of aquatic vegetation and fish. A population census of wetland birds was conducted during January 2014 in Chitwan National Park on the Rapti and Narayani rivers and associated wetlands, including Lami Tal, Tamor Tal, Garud Tal, Devi Tal and marshes and lakes around Temple Tiger. The study found that the Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea was the migratory waterfowl with the largest population in these rivers.

Studying the vegetation of freshwater lakes remains a topical subject in the national parks of the Arkhangelsk Region. It is in particular important for the Onega Pomorie National Park, which is located along the coasts of the Onega and Dvinskoy bays (of the White Sea) in the northern part of the Onega Peninsula. This article examines the spatial structure of aquatic and coastal-aquatic vegetation of Murakanskoye and Bolshoye Vygozero – two large lakes of the Onega Peninsula. The spatial structure is presented in the form of ecological series of associations of plant communities. A comparative characteristic of the lakes’ vegetation is given in the discussion of the article. The littoral zone is poorly developed in both lakes mentioned above. It depends on the openness of the water areas to the winds from the north. It is indicated that the species composition and vegetation structure of the Bolshoye Vygozero Lake mostly depends on water transparency and high acidity; these factors determine the development of the Phragmitetum australis fontinaliosum dalecarlicae, Phragmitetum australis caricosum aquatilis, Caricetum aquatilis associations. In the Murakanskoe Lake, high water transparency and slightly alkaline pH values contribute to the development of communities of pondweeds – such as Potamogeton alpinus, Potamogeton praelongus, and communities of the Lobelietum dortmannae isoëtosum echinosporae association.

SummaryThe critical endangered hispid hare (Caprolagus hispidus) was first recorded as present in Chitwan, Bardiya and Shuklaphanta National Parks of Nepal in 1984. Since then, the species was recorded only in Bardiya and Suklaphanta National Parks. For more than three decades, it had not been observed in Chitwan National Park (CNP), where it was consequently considered extinct. In January 2016, a new recording for the hispid hare took place in CNP, placing that rare mammal again within CNP mammal assemblages. We reported the first photographic confirmation of the presence (30 Jan 2016) of the species in the CNP after 1984. The presence of hispid hare is confined to isolate patched of grassland of the national park. The population of the hispid hare is rapidly declining due to anthropogenic pressure and grassland fire from its distributed range (only found in Nepal, India, and Bhutan). The study on status of wetland birds in Chitwan National Park was carried out from February 5, 2014 to February 20, 2014. The study aimed to determine status and distribution pattern of wetland birds in Chitwan National Park. Study area was divided into four sectors viz; Sunachari to Sauraha, Sauraha to Kasara, Kasara to Rapti/Narayani confluence,and Rapti/Narayani confluence to Tribeni. The total number of wetland birds recorded in the study area was 36 species. Out of them, 15 were winter migratory birds belonging to 5 families, and 21 were residents belonging to 9 families. Among them, Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea) was the most abundant species. Mainly fish-eating bird species were observed at river confluences and shaded forest areas. It was noted that wetland birds are decreasing in number due to high anthropogenic disturbances such as massive sand mining, habitat loss, over fishing, livestock grazing, use of poisoning in wetlands, water pollution, mass tourist pressure in the park and proliferation of alien invasive species.

Along the Costa Rican Caribbean shoreline, it is possible to find two species of crocodilians, the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) and the spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus). This region can be divided geographically into three subregions: North, Central, and South Caribbean. We conducted this research in the North Caribbean, between October 6, 2018 and August 31, 2019. Specifically, we worked in the area lying between the Jalova Station of the Tortugero National Park (TNP) and Agua Dulce Lake situated in the northern tip of Machuca Island, at the mouth of the Colorado River inside the Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge (BACORE), which includes other connecting wetlands as well (Sierpe River, Samay Lake). Overall, this study area had an approximate extension of 408 km2 characterized by large, wide and deep canals, as well as wetlands, meanders, and adjacent lakes. The sampling was performed along 10 segments that varied in length from 7.5 km up to 29.49 km, located in the nearby zones of TNP and BACORE. In these zones, nightly counts were carried out using dazzling lamps. Individuals of C. acutus and C. crocodilus were classified into eight and six body size classes, respectively (both with 50 cm intervals). A relative abundance of 0.55 crocodiles and 1.37 caimans per linear kilometer was estimated during these spotlight surveys. The capture of 39 caimans let us to estimate a ratio of 30 males to 9 females (3.3:1 M:F). In stark contrast, only 1 male and 1 female crocodile were captured. A total of 85 C. acutus and 205 C. crocodilus were observed. Regarding the number of caiman sightings in the TNP, a statistically significant difference was found (Χ2=5.62, p≤0.05) for the distribution by sizes between the zones of BACORE and TNP, whereas no such difference was found for C. crocodilus sightings (Z=–1.22, p≥0.222). Some segments had a higher probability of caiman occurrence than did others in the surveys performed during the monitoring period (X2=8.36, p≤0.05), especially the Jalova-Sierpe River, Caño Negro-Tortuguero, and Tortuguero-Samay Lake (Tortuguero subarea) segments. Ninety percent of the sightings occurred in the BACORE zone, and this was significantly different (Χ2=7.34, p≤0.026) from the studied subareas. The number of crocodile sightings in the Colorado River segment was significantly different and higher than the other segments (X2=7.28, p≤0.05). There was a significant statistical difference among the sizes in all areas of study (X2=5.529, p≤0.026). The abundance of C. acutus and C. crocodilus in the north Caribbean part is lower than in the central Caribbean part of Costa Rica, where this species could use the resources available in more urbanized areas.

The Fishing Cat is a highly specialized and threatened felid, and its status is poorly known in the Terai region of Nepal.  Systematic camera-trap surveys, comprising 868 camera-trap days in four survey blocks of 40km2 in Rapti, Reu and Narayani river floodplains of Chitwan National Park, were used to determine the distribution and habitat characteristics of this species.  A total of 19 photographs of five individual cats were recorded at three locations in six independent events.  Eleven camera-trap records obtained during surveys in 2010, 2012 and 2013 were used to map the species distribution inside Chitwan National Park and its buffer zone.  Habitat characteristics were described at six locations where cats were photographed.  The majority of records were obtained in tall grassland surrounding oxbow lakes and riverbanks.  Wetland shrinkage, prey (fish) depletion in natural wetlands and persecution threaten species persistence.  Wetland restoration, reducing human pressure and increasing fish densities in the wetlands, provision of compensation for loss from Fishing Cats and awareness programs should be conducted to ensure their survival.  We also recommend studying genetic diversity of sub-populations, as well as habitat use by radio-tagging.

AbstractCharacterization of species diversity of zooplankton is key to understanding, assessing, and predicting the function and future of pelagic ecosystems throughout the global ocean. The marine zooplankton assemblage, including only metazoans, is highly diverse and taxonomically complex, with an estimated ~28,000 species of 41 major taxonomic groups. This review provides a comprehensive summary of DNA sequences for the barcode region of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) for identified specimens. The foundation of this summary is the MetaZooGene Barcode Atlas and Database (MZGdb), a new open-access data and metadata portal that is linked to NCBI GenBank and BOLD data repositories. The MZGdb provides enhanced quality control and tools for assembling COI reference sequence databases that are specific to selected taxonomic groups and/or ocean regions, with associated metadata (e.g., collection georeferencing, verification of species identification, molecular protocols), and tools for statistical analysis, mapping, and visualization. To date, over 150,000 COI sequences for ~ 5600 described species of marine metazoan plankton (including holo- and meroplankton) are available via the MZGdb portal. This review uses the MZGdb as a resource for summaries of COI barcode data and metadata for important taxonomic groups of marine zooplankton and selected regions, including the North Atlantic, Arctic, North Pacific, and Southern Oceans. The MZGdb is designed to provide a foundation for analysis of species diversity of marine zooplankton based on DNA barcoding and metabarcoding for assessment of marine ecosystems and rapid detection of the impacts of climate change.
