The New York Digital Salon: A Memoir

Abstract This article traces the twenty-year history of the New York Digital Salon. Started in 1993 to provide an annual venue for digital art images in New York City, it quickly expanded into an international forum for exhibitions, panel discussions, lectures, screenings and a website. In addition to these events, we created a collection of videotaped panel discussions with well-known digital artists and curators from our 2002 Digital Art & Culture Symposium held at the Museum of Modern Art Theatre. From 1995-2002, the artwork was included, along with essays on digital art, in eight issues of Leonardo. A tenth exhibition was held during 2002 at the World Financial Center, along with over twenty events, panel discussions and lectures that were part of the Downtown Arts Festival. In 2013, we celebrated our twentieth anniversary with the “American Algorists: Linear Sublime,” exhibition and catalog featuring Jean Pierre Hebert, Manfred Mohr, Michael Noll, Roman Verostko and Mark Wilson.

Exhibition 58: Modern Architecture in England, held between 10 February and 7 March 1937 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), was a notable event. Amidst claims that ‘England leads the world in modern architectural activity’, the exhibition ‘amazed New Yorkers’ and equally surprised English commentators. However, it has not subsequently received any extended investigation. The present purpose is to look at it as a multiple sequence of events, involving other exhibitions, associated publications and the trajectories of individuals and institutions, through which tensions came to the surface about the definition and direction of Modernism in England and elsewhere. Such an analysis throws new light on issues such as the motives for staging the exhibition, the personnel involved and associated questions relating to the role of émigré architects in Britain and the USA, some of which have been misinterpreted in recent commentaries.Hitchcock's unequivocal claim for the importance of English Modernism at this point still arouses disbelief, and raises a question whether it can be accepted at face value or requires explaining in terms of some other hidden intention.

In 1966 John Latham and some friends began chewing Clement Greenberg’s book Art and culture: collected essays. The resulting art work, entitled Art and Culture (1966-1969), is now recognised as a seminal conceptual art work and is part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Latham, however, had borrowed the book from St. Martin’s School of Art library and when he was unable to return it in a suitable condition his teaching contract was not renewed. This essay looks at the history of the work, the ideas behind its creation, and the issues it raises for the culture of the book today.

September of 1961 brought welcome relief from the Berlin Crisis in the Oform of two distinctly American recreations: the World Series and the fall book season. As always, both seemed to focus on New York City, and the New York media brought excitement and suspense to fit both seasons: excitement – as Roger Maris attempted to break Babe Ruth's record of sixty home runs – and suspense, as Simon & Schuster ran eye-catching but mysterious ads for a new novel, revealing nothing more than the title – Catch-22. Everyone knew what Maris's quest meant, but no one seemed to know what “CATCH-22” meant.

This chapter details events in Roland Penrose's life from 1945 to 1947. Lee and Roland flew to New York City on 19 May 1946. Roland was elated to have the opportunity to rekindle his relationship with the Museum of Modern Art's (MOMA) director Alfred H. Barr, Jr., who likely warned him about the dangers he would face if he backed any kind of proposal to open a museum of modern art in London. Roland was taken with MOMA's collection: ‘Realizing that it was on a far greater scale that anything that could be dreamt of in London, consistently indifferent to all matters concerning the visual arts and still enfeebled by the war, this achievement nevertheless roused in me a longing to attempt some similar kind of folly at home’. Barr would also have expressed his gratitude to Roland for allowing his Picassos to be sent to MOMA during the war.

The world has become a global village and all nationals have got opportunity to visit various parts of the world due to advancement of travelling and communication technologies for the purpose of trade, education, business or trade. Somehow, the main reason to travel for majority of population stands to earn a good earning that is creating trouble for many nations and France is among top of the list. France has emerged as a multi-cultural nation and many of its societies have been based on multi-cultural intruders. The country is thinking to tackle the issue but all in vein and inacceptable by the concerned. The illegal immigrants are demanding to be issued permanent residence of France and identification cards as per the country rules but most injured nation stands the Muslim societies. The whole Europe looks at Muslims with an eye of hatred and consider them threat to their safety especially after the 9/11 attacks on twin-towers of New York City. Our article depicts highlight on the history of establishment of France as a Multi-cultural nation and the challenges it is being faced with.

ABSTRACTScholars, journalists, and government officials have tried to understand al-Qa'ida and its predecessor, Maktab al-Khidamat, since the early 1980s. These efforts increased significantly after the 11 September 2001 attacks against the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon. Yet, despite this attention, questions remain unanswered. What factors have influenced al-Qa'ida leaders over time as they have made and executed strategic decisions? How have they defined their relationship with affiliated groups in the context of these decisions? This present article utilizes private al-Qa'ida documents, captured by United States Navy Seals during a raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, and recently released to the public, to answer these questions. In doing so, it casts doubt on some of the conventional explanations for al-Qa'ida's trajectory between 2004 and 2013.

AbstractForty years ago, in late December 1968, John K. Fairbank, the longtime dean of American China scholars, gave a memorable presidential address to the annual meeting of the American Historical Association (AHA) in New York City. In it, he urged his fellow historians to take up a task expressed in the title of his address, “Assignment for the 1970s: The Study of American–East Asian Relations.” Although he spoke amid academic upheaval over the Vietnam War, his address made it clear that he was mainly referring to China and Sino-American relations. He described China as .a uniquely large and compact section of mankind…too big and too different to be assimilated into our…culture.. He also argued that .China is too weak to conquer the world but too large to be digested by it.

In the paper the profile and activity of Eli Broad is presented; an American entrepreneur, collector, philanthropist, Broad is one of the wealthiest individuals in the world who has allocated most of his assets to charity. His collecting passion climaxed in The Broad Museum of modern art designed by the New York architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and opened in September 2015 in Downtown Los Angeles. Not only has Eli Broad funded the museum bearing his own name and numerous other buildings designed by the most outstanding modern architects, but many other museum institutions are indebted to this charity.
