Alongside the everyday speech style, Dyirbal had an avoidance style called Jalnguy, which had to be used in the presence of relatives with whom direct contact should be avoided. The two styles had identical grammar, phonology, and phonetics, but every lexeme was different. Jalnguy was pitched at a more general level so that, in many cases, several lexemes in the everyday style would be grouped under one term in Jalnguy. For example, six varieties of oak tree would each have its own name in the everyday style, but fell together under one Jalnguy term.Examination of the Jalnguy correspondences given for adjectives shows that the Jalnguy lexicon is less rich and less well-developed when dealing with adjectives than with verbs and nouns. There are, of course, Jalnguy correspondents Ev adjectives expressing the most common qualities, found across languages world-wide. There are a number of many-to-one everyday-to-Jalnguy correspondences, which can be semantically revealing. Speakers provided sentential definitions for some adjectives (in terms of verbs), often quite ingenious. But for many everyday style adjectives referring to rather recondite qualities, my consultants could offer no appropriate Jalnguy term. What they did instead was provide an evaluative judgment, most often 'not good', sometimes 'good' (or occasionally a dimensional description, 'big' or 'little'). The principle of not using any everyday style words in Jalnguy discourse was thus maintained by commenting on the worth of a quality, rather that specifying what the quality is.

This article introduces the special issue on ‘Collective redress in labour law’. Even the best labour code in the world would be practically useless without procedural rules to enable its enforcement. The contributions in this special issue show that, while the mechanism of collective redress certainly functions with mixed results and often is underused in practice, it is nevertheless a valuable tool in the enforcement toolbox, where available. It might be particularly useful for some groups of workers, such as those who lack individual means for asserting their employment-based rights in their own name. While not an answer to all problems, and undoubtedly, not sufficient to close the justice gap for many European workers on its own, collective redress, if adequately constructed, could complement and improve existing enforcement mechanisms in both national and EU labour law.

The study classifies proper names of housing estates (HE) in Lviv according to certain phenomena, images, symbols. The iconic, indexical, conventional relations of the architecture of HE are revealed as a sign-vehicle to its referent which is declared in its own name through the pyramidal structure of the semiotic triangle. The problem of conditionality and immanence of one's proper name concerning the architectural image of the HE is highlighted.

AbstractThe “Attentional Blink” refers to difficulty in detecting the second of two target stimuli presented in rapid temporal succession. Studies have shown that salient target stimuli, such as one’s own name, reduce the magnitude of this effect. Given indications that self-related processing is altered in autism, it is an open question whether this attentional self-bias is reduced in autism. To investigate this, in the current study we utilised an Attentional Blink paradigm involving one’s own and others’ names, in a group of 24 autistic adults, and 22 neurotypical adults, while measuring EEG. In line with previous studies, the Attentional Blink was reduced when the participant’s own name was the second target, with no differences between autistic and neurotypical participants. ERP results show that the effect on the Attentional Blink of one’s own name was reflected in increased N2 and P3 amplitudes, for both autistic and nonautistic individuals. This is the first event-related potential study of own-name processing in the context of the Attentional Blink. The results provide evidence of an intact attentional self-bias in autism, both at the behavioural and neural level.

In recent decades, processional imagery has undergone an aesthetic evolution that has already been demonstrated by various researchers who are experts in the field. The intention of this article is to delve into its origins both from a geographical and conceptual point of view, to further investigate a new style with international projection. The anthropology behind the cultural and religious phenomenon of Holy Week has its reflection in the way in which a certain group of imagers understood sacred sculpture, generating a style that has ended up forging thanks to the emergence of a school with its own name. Although this new imagery has already been the subject of some studies that have tried to offer a formal and conceptual explanation, a stylistic and anthropological review seems necessary to provide new arguments. All this through the formal analysis of the work of the protagonists of this trend, as well as their concept of imagery and the generation of artists involved.

Self-reference effect (SRE) is defined as better recall or recognition performance when the materials that are memorized refer to the self. The SRE paradigm usually requires participants to explicitly refer items to themselves, but some researchers have found that the SRE also can occur for implicitly self-referenced items. Few studies though have investigated the effect of self-related stimuli without awareness. In this study, we presented self-related (participants’ names) or other (other’s names or nouns) stimuli for a very short time between masks and then explicitly presented subsequent trait adjectives to participants. Recognition performance showed no significant differences between the own-name and the other two conditions in Experiment 1 that had random-order conditions. On the other hand, the result of Experiment 2 that had block-order conditions and greater prime stimuli suggests that SRE can occur as a result of the instantaneous stimulus: Subjects who showed better memory performance also had relatively high recognition of the trait adjectives that they viewed after their instantaneously presented own-name. This effect would show that self-representation can be activated by self-related stimuli without awareness and that subsequent items are unconsciously referenced to that self-representation.

The relevance of our study is due to the fact that in modern linguistics is still insufficiently studied the potential of the proper names of the literary heroes in the prose texts of famous authors. Therefore, in our opinion, the study of the hero's own name needs special attention, and a thorough analysis of the proper names of the literary heroes in M. Dochynets' novel "Children of the Fern" opens opportunities for further generalizations in the field of relevant linguistic and stylistic issues. The purpose of our article is to study the role of the proper names of the literary heroes in the novel "Children of the Fern" written by the Transcarpathian writer, winner of the Shevchenko Prize Myroslav Dochynets; our task is to describe the proper names of the literary heroes, to reveal their information loading, the role in the development of the plot. The object of the research is the novel "Children of the Fern" by M. Dochynets. The subject of the research is the proper names of the literary heroes and their functional content. Methods and techniques. Research methods are determined by the specifics of onymic material, which requires a systematic approach and the use of traditional descriptive method and its basic techniques: observation, interpretation and generalization. The functional load of the proper names of the literary heroes is determined by the method of contextual analysis. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time the role of the proper names of the literary heroes functioning in the novel "Children of the Fern" by M. Dochynets is studied. Attention is paid to the role of the proper names of the literary heroes (including pseudonyms) and the conditions of their origin; the etymological meaning (internal form) of the proper names of the literary heroes is revealed. It is proved that proper names of the literary heroes in the novel are the most important lexical elements that have a variety of semantic and emotional content, they are accompanied by connotations and various associations, and they characterize the character by national, social origin, and create a certain emotional tone, reflect the author's attitude to the named character. Conclusions. Proper names of the literary heroes in the novel "Children of the Fern" are a powerful layer of vocabulary. Their role in the text is difficult to evaluate: they are indicators of time, nationally significant, informational and evaluative – they perform different functions.

Michael Nahm’s report in this issue of the JSE deftly presents many of the scholarly offenses perpetrated by Alejandro Parra. Some of those not mentioned had to do with Parra’s submissions to the JSE, and I feel it’s important to add those to the record. JSE published a retraction notice earlier this year (Volume 35, Issue 1) and provided examples of Parra’s plagiarism. Moreover, the Journal rejected another paper in which we found substantial plagiarism. But Parra’s boldest effort was his submission, under his own name, of a paper by an Argentinian author, Anna Conforte—in fact, a paper Parra published in his own newsletter. But Parra never indicated that the paper was written by someone else. Several people independently and carefully compared the English submission to the original Spanish. All agreed that Parra apparently simply auto-translated the paper to clumsy English and presented it as his own work.

The municipality generally uses its property to perform self-governing functions, and public or business activities. In the conditions of the Slovak Republic, the municipality operates either as a legal entity in its own name or carries out business activities with the help of a contributory and budgetary organization or business firm established by the municipality. Revenues from business activities form an important part of the revenue of local self-government budgets. The aim of this paper was an economic evaluation of the management of municipal firms at the level of rural local self-governments in the conditions of the Slovak Republic on the basis of selected economic indicators. At the same time, we analyzed the relationship between selected economic indicators in relation to the size, lifespan and number of employees of the firm. The analysis was performed in the time period 2015–2019 on a sample of municipal firms at the level of rural local self-governments. For the analysis, we used selected mathematical–statistical methods (Shapiro–Wilk test, Kruskal–Wallis test, and regression analysis). The analysis showed that the differences in the profitability of municipal firms from the point of view of the region in which they operate as well as from the point of view of the number of employees is not statistically significant. Statistical significance was not demonstrated even within the volume of revenue of municipal firms from the point of view of the region in which the municipal firm operates. The volume of revenues of municipal enterprises with the population of the municipality as well as the length of time of operation on the market is growing, but these are not the only factors on which these results depend.
