An updated checklist of groundwater crustaceans of India

Abstract Only eight groundwater crustacean species were known in India till the end of 20th century. Analysis of about 4000 samples collected during 2000-2016 from diverse groundwater habitats, especially in certain pockets of the deltaic belt of the Rivers Krishna and Godavari in the southeastern peninsular India, has so far yielded about 90 new crustacean taxa. Of these, 67 new species have been described formally, which include, respectively, 34, 27, 3, 2 and 1 species each of Copepoda, Bathynellacea, Amphipoda, Isopoda and Ostracoda. The updated checklist presented herein includes a total of 87 species in 45 genera, 22 families and 8 orders. For each species, the reference to its original description, type locality, distribution, and ecological notes, co-occurring fauna, if any, and sampling method(s) are given. Besides map-pointing the type localities of the species, brief notes are given on the biogeography and conservation.

Three new species of Moniligaster Perrier, 1872, namely M. bahli Narayanan & Julka, sp. nov., M. blakemorei Narayanan & Julka, sp. nov. and M. keralensis Narayanan & Julka, sp. nov. are described from materials collected from the Indian state of Kerala. Moniligaster cernosvitovi Gates, 1962, Moniligaster horsti Gates, 1940, Moniligaster michaelseni Gates, 1940 and Moniligaster stephensoni Gates, 1940 are recorded for the first time from the state. With the new findings, a total of 10 Moniligaster species are known from Kerala. Moniligaster species are restricted to southern peninsular India, except Moniligaster ivaniosi Manazhy, 2011, decribed from the Andaman Islands, outside the currently known distributional range of the genus. Hence we critically reviewed the original description and reinvestigated the holotype. As a result, Moniligaster ivaniosi is considered a junior synonym of Drawida nepalensis Michaelsen, 1907.

Scytalopus speluncae was described from a specimen taken at São João del Rei, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Ménétriés described it as having the throat and the central breast evidently whitish, but since then this name has been rather surprisingly attributed to the uniformly slate gray Mouse-colored Tapaculo of the eastern coastal Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Contrary to previous findings, our analysis of the holotype, two new specimens from the type locality (topotypes) and original description of Scytalopus speluncae indicates that this name must be applied to the pale gray form with rufous-barred thighs that is found in Minas Gerais. This species is apparently very common in São João del Rei. This paper redescribes Scytalopus speluncae, correcting this name application, and describing, as a new species, populations from the Serra do Mar and vicinity, previously misidentified as S. speluncae.

Plutomurus jordanai sp. nov. from Zeda Kvilishori Cave (Tskaltubo Municipality, Imereti region, Western Georgia) is described, illustrated and differentiated from other morphologically similar species‒‒P. kelasuricus Martynova, 1969 and P. eristoi Barjadze, Baquero, Soto-Adames, Giordano & Jordana, 2016. In addition, morphological characters omitted or erroneously provided in the original description of Plutomurus birsteini Djanashvili & Barjadze, 2011 are described and illustrated from the specimen sampled in the type locality‒‒Sakishore Cave (Racha region, Western Georgia). An identification key to the species of the genus Plutomurus reported from the Caucasus is presented. A list of the invertebrate communities for Zeda Kvilishori and Sakishore caves is provided.

Peyssonneliaceae represents a monophyletic clade of red encrusting algae classified Peyssonneliales. Molecular analyses have been important for revealing unknown diversity in this family, which includes small, cryptic organisms, frequently distinguished solely by discrete anatomical characters. Brazil however, remains virtually unknown. To assess this diversity, phylogenetic and barcoding analyses using rbcL, COI-5P and SSU data, as well as morpho-anatomical analyses were performed. Here we report the first occurrence of two genera on the Brazilian coast: Ramicrusta and Incendia, and describe three new species: Ramicrusta fujiiana sp. nov., Ramicrusta paradoxa sp. nov. and Incendia yoneshigueana sp. nov. Ramicrusta was resolved as a monophyletic clade in the three reconstructed phylogenies, and had congruent topologies. In the rbcL phylogeny, Ramicrusta fujiiana formed a well-supported clade sister to a well-supported clade including R. aranea (Vanuatu, type locality) and R. textilis (Jamaica, type locality). Morphological characters of R. paradoxa are not in agreement with the original description of the genus. Therefore, we present an updated and broader concept of Ramicrusta. Incendia was resolved as a monophyletic clade with full support for rbcL. Incendia yoneshigueana is in a sister relationship with I. glabra (Vanuatu, type locality). This study extends the distributions of Ramicrusta and Incendia, proposes three new species, and confirms the effectiveness of rbcL, COI-5P and SSU in inferring phylogenetic relationships and delimiting species in the Peyssonneliales. The integrative approach established clear taxonomic concepts for the studied genera and species, and identified useful characters for genera delimitation in Peyssonneliaceae.

AbstractEight genera and 25 species are recognized among the Nearctic, Mexican, and West Indian Oodini. Four new species are described: Oodinus pseudopiceus (type locality: Hillsborough River St. Pk., Hillsborough Co., Florida); Oodinus similis (type locality: San Quintín, Chiapas, Mexico); Oodinus darlingtoni (type locality: Cauto El Cristo, Oriente, Cuba); and Oodinus edentulus (type locality: 31.8 mi E Francisco Escárcega, Campeche, Mexico). Oodes fluvialis LeConte, 1863, previously recognized as a subspecies of O. americanus Dejean, 1826, is given specific status. The following new synonymies are established: Eulachnocrepis Habu, 1956 with Lachnocrepis LeConte, 1853; Stenocrepis texana (LeConte, 1863), S. chalcas Bates, 1882, and S. chalcochrous Chaudoir, 1883 with S. insulana (Jacquelin du Val, 1857); Stenocrepis quatuordecimstriata (Chaudoir, 1843), S. picipes (LeConte, 1844), S. stenocephala (LaFerté-Sénectère, 1851), and S. sulcata Chevrolat, 1863 with S. mexicana (Chevrolat, 1835). Lectotypes are designated for Oodinus alutaceus (Bates, 1882), Oodes amaroides Dejean, 1831, O. fluvialis LeConte, 1863, O. americanus Dejean, 1826, Stenocrepis texana (LeConte, 1863), S. chalcas Bates, 1882, S. lecontei (Chaudoir, 1857), S. quatuordecimstriata (Chaudoir, 1843), S. picipes (LeConte, 1844), S. cuprea (Chaudoir, 1843), S. tibialis (Chevrolat, 1834), S. femoralis (Chaudoir, 1835), S. elegans (LeConte, 1851), and S. gratiosa (Bates, 1882). The genus-group name Nanodes Habu, 1956, a homonym of Nanodes Schönherr, 1825, is replaced by Nanodiodes, new replacement name. For each genus treated, the following are provided: citation of original description and selected references, notes about synonymy (if required), description, geographical distribution and diversity, and monophyly and phylogenetic relationships. For each species included, the following are given: citation of original description and synonymies, type material, etymology (for new species only), notes about synonymy (if required), diagnosis, description, geographical distribution, bionomics, and phylogenetic relationships (if the genus includes more than two species). Keys to genera and, for each genus, to species are included. The species distributions are mapped, and the important structural features are illustrated.

Petta Malmgren, 1866 is a small and poorly known genus of the annelid family Pectinariidae Quatrefages, 1866. Prior to this study, the genus comprised four species P. pusilla Malmgren, 1866 (type locality Gullmarsfjord, west coast of Sweden), P. assimilis McIntosh, 1885 (type locality between Prince Edward and Kerguelen Island, southern Indian Ocean), P. pellucida (Ehlers, 1887) (type locality Santarem Channel between Cay Sal Bank and Bahamas, Caribbean Sea) and P. tenuis Caullery, 1944 (type locality Sulu, Philippines, tropical Pacific Ocean), the two last ones were known only from the original description. We revised the genus by re-examining the types and providing updated illustrated re-descriptions of its species, except for P. assimilis of which the type material has been lost. Commonly used morphological characters of the genus are expanded to also include new ones such as the presence of pair of lateral ear-shaped lobes adjacent to dorsal base of cephalic veil, pair of ventral lappets on segment 1, pair of dorso-lateral pads on segment 5, large basal hump on branchiae, and a rounded anterior peg with a blunt tip and a longitudinal row of two major teeth on uncini. The type species P. pusilla is recognised as having four lappets on the anterior margins of cephalic veil and a large lower lip posterior to buccal cavity. Two species P. investigatoris n. sp. and P. williamsonae n. sp. are described from deep water off the coast of southeastern Australia and represent the first records of this genus in Australian waters. A phylogenetic position of one new species was assessed in the framework of a phylogeny based on a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene (mtCOI). An updated taxonomic key to Pectinariidae genera and all species of Petta is given.

The genus Thelepus Leuckart, 1849 is well known in Brazilian waters, from a species recorded by several authors as T. setosus (Quatrefages, 1866), which is considered to be a cosmopolitan species. However, the type locality of T. setosus is in France, which renders the presence of this species in Brazilian waters rather unlikely. The wide range of distribution of T. setosus is most likely due to misidentifications, especially because the original description of the species is very brief and does not include several characters now relevant at species level. We provide herein a redescription of the holotype of T. setosus and describe two new species from Brazilian material previously identified as belonging to that species. Thelepus megalabiatum n. sp. is characterised by having an expanded lower lip extending ventrally, many branchial filaments, originating from swollen cushions, with wide mid-dorsal gap between filaments within pairs, 26–33 segments with glandular areas, and 44–61+ pairs of notopodia. Thelepus brevitori n. sp. is characterised by having fewer branchial filaments, originating directly from the body wall, about 17 segments highly glandular ventrally, and up to 27 pairs of notopodia. Both new species are compared to the most similar congeners, including T. setosus.

Vellozia fontellana is described as a new species from the Ibitipoca massif in Minas Gerais, Brazil. This heliophilous species has sometimes been identified as V. crinita in herbaria and recent literature, but is readily distinguished by morphology, anatomy and occurrence restricted to northward slopes exposed to full sun exposure. The original description of V. crinita, translated from Latin, is complemented by information gathered from our collections and observations in the type locality spanning the last three decades of field work.

Two new species are described from Ecuador: Anisopodus flavomarginatus, and Leptocometes brevicornis. Hyperplatys argus (Bates, 1872) is transferred to its original genus: Anisopodus White, 1855. Comments regarding the type locality of Hylettus eremita (Erichson, 1847) and variation of pronotal and elytral pubescence pattern in the species are provided. The species is reported from Colombia for the first time. The type locality, number of specimens in the original description, and institution depositary of the syntypes of Astynomus sallei Candèze (1861 (= H. eremita) are discussed.

Eleven new species of the Aname pallida species-group - defined as having males with an elongate embolus and incrassate metatarsus I - are described; three previously described species are revised. Chenistonza giraulti Rainbow is newly synonymized with A, pallida Koch; A. atra (Strand) and A. distincta (Rainbow) are considered valid. The recent designation of a neotype of Dekana diversicolor Hogg is found to be invalid because of significant differences between the designated specimen and the original description, and the type locality is now considered to be in western Queensland. Biological and behavioural notes are given for some species. Species for which males have not been described are considered Aname species of unresolved infrageneric affinities. The following species of the A, pallida group are treated: A. pallida Koch, A. atra (Strand), A, barrema, sp. nov., A. blackdownensis, sp. nov., A. camara, sp. nov., A. carina, sp. nov., A. collinsorum, sp. nov., A. diversicolor (Hogg), A. distincta (Rainbow), A. humptjidoo, sp. nov., A. inimica, sp. nov., A. longitheca, sp. nov., A, robertsorum, sp. nov., A. tigrina, sp. nov., and A, warialda, sp. nov. A. kirrama Raven, 1984 is included only in the key.
