Morphological and molecular characterisation of Aporcelinus zapotitlanensis sp. n. (Dorylaimida: Aporcelaimidae) from central Mexico

Summary A new species of Aporcelinus, collected in a natural habitat of central Mexico, is described and illustrated, including molecular (D2-D3 28S-rRNA) data. Aporcelinus zapotitlanensis sp. n. is characterised by its 1.19-1.43 mm long body, lip region offset by a deep constriction and 16.5-18.5 μm broad, odontostyle 19.5-22 long, neck 325-368 μm long, pharyngeal expansion 150-201 μm long or 46-55% of the total neck length, uterus 130-167 μm long and tripartite, V = 54-56, tail conical with finely rounded tip (30-37 μm, c = 34-43, c′ = 1.2-1.4) lacking a distinct dorsal concavity, spicules 48-51 μm long, and 11-12 spaced ventromedian supplements with one or two of them located within the range of the spicules. Molecular analyses confirm the monophyly of Aporcelinus and places the new species within a clade shared with A. infundibulicaudatus and A. amazonicus.

Summary A new species of Aporcelaimellus, collected in a watermelon field in Nigeria, is described, including its morphological and molecular (D2-D3 28S-rDNA, 18r-DNA) characterisation. Aporcelaimellus nigeriensis sp. n. is distinguishable by its 2.76-3.55 mm length, very coarse ventral body pores, lip region offset by deep constriction and 24-27 μm broad odontostyle 30-36 μm long at its dorsal and 28-31 μm at its ventral side, neck 648-779 μm long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 54-60% of total neck length, uterus 300-473 μm or 2.1-3.2 body diam. long and tripartite, V = 49-54, tail short and convex conoid (27-41 μm, c = 72-115, c′ = 0.5-0.7), spicules 108-137 μm long, and 9-10 spaced ventromedian supplements with hiatus. LSU analysis revealed a close relationship of A. nigeriensis sp. n. with other Aporcelaimellus species and questioned, once more, the monophyly of Aporcelaimidae. SSU phylogenetic tree was not able to resolve the relationship between the new species and other closely related species.

Abstract A new species with a rounded tail belonging to the Enchodelus macrodorus-group is described from a natural habitat in the vicinity of Kaleibar City, north-west Iran. Enchodelus babakicus n. sp. is characterised by its medium sized body (1.21-1.56 mm), lip region offset by a marked constriction, odontostyle 40-45 μm long, tripartite uterus and presence of abundant males with 49-61 μm long spicules and 10-14 spaced ventromedian supplements. The new species is close to E. distinctus, E. groenlandicus, E. macrodorus, E. microdoroides and E. saxifragae. A population of E. macrodorus was also found in the same sample as the new species. Molecular analysis was inferred from sequencing of 18S rDNA and ITS1 regions of three species of the genus from Iran, including E. babakicus n. sp., E. macrodorus and E. veletensis, together with other available sequences in GenBank. The sequences showed that E. babakicus n. sp. belongs to a clade formed by Enchodelus species characterised by a rounded tail.

Summary Chitwoodius coffeae sp. n. is described, including SEM observations and molecular (D2-D3 expansion segment of the rDNA 28S) analysis, from a coffee plantation in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The new species is characterised by its 1.69-2.01 mm long body in females and 1.29-1.51 mm in males, lip region offset by deep constriction and 15-17 μm broad, odontostyle 27-30 μm long, neck 340-473 μm long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 52-54% of total neck length, uterus a simple tube-like structure 68-106 μm long, vulva longitudinal (V = 54-59), tail short and rounded conoid (20-28 μm, c = 54-88, c′ = 0.6-0.8) with a nearly terminal projection of inner cuticle layer, spicules 60-64 μm long, and 7-10 spaced ventromedian supplements without hiatus. SEM pictures, available for the first time for a representative of the genus, show a hexagonal (nearly hexastellate) oral field divided into six sectors by the existence of six deep incisures. Molecular analyses, also presented for the first time for a representative of the genus, results in a narrow evolutionary relationship among Chitwoodius and Tylencholaimus, and supports the monophyly of the Tylencholaimidae. This is the first record of Chitwoodius in Asian Far East territories. Chitwoodius ahmadi sp. n. is proposed for a misattributed population of C. seshadrii.

Summary A new species belonging to the genus Aporcella, collected in cultivated soils of East Azarbaijan province, Iran, is described and illustrated. The new species is characterised by its 1.08 (1.05-1.15) mm long body, two-layered cuticle, lip region offset by constriction and 12 (11-13) μm broad, odontostyle 13.0 (12.5-14.0) μm long or nearly equal to lip region diam., neck 310 (293-325) μm long, pharyngeal expansion 137 (128-144) μm long, occupying 43-45% of the total neck length, female genital system didelphic-amphidelphic, uterus simple, 34-48 μm long, vulva transverse (V = 59 (58-61)), tail conical with finely rounded terminus (30 (29-33) μm long, c = 34 (33-36), c′ = 1.5 (1.4-1.6)), and male absent. Molecular analyses, using Bayesian inference based on partial LSU sequences, confirm the monophyly of Aporcella as well as its clustering with other dorylaimid taxa characterised by the absence of pars refringens vaginae. The taxonomy of the genus is updated, with an emended diagnosis, list of species, key to their identification, and a compendium of the main morphometrics of species/populations described since the last available revision.

Beaucarnea olsonii is described and illustrated from tropical deciduous forests of SW Puebla, Mexico. The new species can be distinguished from other Beaucarnea species by its massively swollen base that abruptly tapers into slender branches, by its conspicuously long stigma, and by its pedicel articulation that occurs at 2/3 of the length of the pedicel below the flower. With this new addition, the total number of endemic species of Beaucarnea for Mexico increases to 10, making this country the greatest center of diversification and endemism for the genus. We also provide a distribution map and a conservation status recommendation for the new species, as well as a key to the Beaucarnea species of southern central Mexico.

AbstractA recent discovery of freshwater sponges in an unexplored hydrographic basin in north-western Australia provided the opportunity to investigate the genus Corvospongilla Annandale (Spongillida: Spongillidae) using integrative systematics. Emendation of the genus diagnosis is provided. A comparative analysis of a Corvospongilla global dataset of morphological traits together with biogeographic patterns disclosed a new Australasian Corvospongilla species and along with molecular analyses provided the basis for a phylogenetic and phylogeographic tree for some Asian, Afrotropical and Australasian lineages.

A new species of the genus Cyrtodactylus is described from Dien Bien Province, northwestern Vietnam based on morphological and molecular data. Cyrtodactylus ngati sp. nov. can be distinguished from remaining congeners by the following combination of characters: maximum SVL 69.3 mm; dorsal pattern consisting of six dark irregular transverse bands between limb insertions; inter-supranasals one; dorsal tubercles present on occiput, body, hind limbs and on first half of tail; 17–22 irregular dorsal tubercle rows at midbody; lateral folds clearly defined, with interspersed tubercles; 32–38 ventral scales between ventrolateral folds; 13 precloacal pores separated by a diastema of 5/5 poreless scales from a series of 7/7 femoral pores in enlarged femoral scales; precloacal and femoral pores absent in females; 1–3 postcloacal tubercles on each side; transversely enlarged median subcaudal scales absent. In the molecular analyses, the new species is shown to be the sister taxon to C. interdigitalis from Thailand. This is the 47th species of the genus Cyrtodactylus and the first member of the C. brevipalmatus species group recorded from Vietnam.

Crassolabium unicum sp. n., collected from a natural habitat in Vietnam, is described and illustrated. The new species is characterized by its 0.77–0.94 mm long body, three-layered cuticle, lip region offset by depression and 12–13.5 µm broad, odontostyle 13.5–15 µm long with wide aperture occupying 36–46% of its length, neck 235–260 µm long, pharyngeal expansion 117–131 µm long or occupying 47–52% of total neck length, anterior part of intestine presenting very distinct folds, female genital system didelphic-amphidelphic, uterus simple and 28–43 µm or 0.7–0.9 body diameters, vulva transverse (V = 45–52), prerectum bearing a blind postrectal sac, caudal region short and rounded (21–25 µm, c = 45–61, c’ = 0.6–0.8) with two (dorsal and ventral) lacunae between outer and intermediate cuticle layers, and male unknown. It is compared with the similar representatives of the genus.

The authors describe the macro- and microscopic features of Inocybe cervenianensis, a new taxon belonging to the genus Inocybe sensu stricto. The description is illustrated with photographs of the basidiomes in their natural habitat and photographs of the main microscopic features. Molecular data (nrITS and RPB2) support the recognition of this new species.

A new species, Eudorylaimus piceae n. sp., extracted from rhizosphere soil of Picea crassifolia from Inner Mongolia, China was identified. The new species is characterized by these combined characters: body length of 1.03–1.27 mm; lip region distinctly offset; odontostyle 20–22 μm and 1.1–1.4 times the lip region diameter in length; odontophore 1.1–1.2 times the odontostyle length; basal expansion of pharynx occupying 42%–50.5% of the total neck length; genital system didelphic-amphidelphic; vulva transverse; vagina extending inwards 32%–43%; V value averaging more than 60; pars refringens vaginae with two trapezoidal sclerotizations and pars distalis vaginae weakly sclerotized; prerectum 72–107 μm long, 2.3–3.3 times the anal body diameter, and rectum 1–1.6 times the anal body diameter in length; tail conoid and bent ventrally, c’ value 1.5–1.8 and males unknown. Phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of 18S small subunit rDNA and the D2-D3 expansion region of 28S rDNA are presented.
