Integrative taxonomic revision of the New Caledonian endemic genus Taophila Heller (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Eumolpinae)

Abstract There are 96 endemic species of Eumolpinae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) described from New Caledonia, but some estimates propose that the actual number could be at least twice this figure. Not surprisingly, when a particular species assemblage has been revised, the number of species in that group increases significantly. Here, we revise the New Caledonian endemic genus Taophila Heller, 1916, the best studied in this fauna and currently known to include eleven species, one in the subgenus Jolivetiana Gómez-Zurita & Cardoso, 2014, and ten in the nominal subgenus. The analysis of morphological differences in a large sample of Taophila and the validation of the resulting species hypotheses in an integrative fashion based on a phylogenetic analysis of partial mtDNA sequences (cox1 and rrnS) resulted in the addition of eleven more taxa. Taxonomic splits mainly reinterpreted the previous observation of mtDNA paraphyly affecting T. subsericea Heller, 1916, shown to represent a complex of species mostly distinguishable by diagnostic differences among females. The new species described are: T. bituberculata n. sp., T. carinata n. sp., T. dapportoi n. sp., T. davincii n. sp., T. draco n. sp., T. goa n. sp., T. hackae n. sp., T. samuelsoni n. sp., T. sideralis n. sp., T. taaluny n. sp. and T. wanati n. sp. These additions and the synonymy T. subsericea Heller = Stethotes mandjeliae Jolivet, Verma & Mille, 2010 n. syn., bring to 21 the total number of species in Taophila. Moreover, we also found the first evidence of mtDNA introgression between species of New Caledonian Eumolpinae, resulting from putative recent hybridization of T. subsericea and T. dapportoi where these species coexist. We describe a model incorporating the mtDNA genealogy of T. subsericea about the conditions that may have favored the secondary geographic encounter required for the hybridization of these species.

A new species of Cyphophthalmi belonging to the New Caledonian endemic genus Troglosiro Juberthie, 1979 is described and illustrated using SEM, including the first description of a troglosironid ovipositor. T. longifossa sp. nov., known only from its type locality in Port Boisé, and found at low elevation near sea level, constitutes the seventh species of Troglosiro to be described to date. The new species has a unique disposition of the four ventral opisthosomal gland pores in the anterior portion of a long depression of the sternal segments 3 to 7. Information on other specimens recently collected in New Caledonia indicates that the number of described species in the island is a gross underestimate of the real diversity of New Caledonian Cyphophthalmi, both in number of species and morphology.

Psychotria (Rubiaceae) is the second largest genus of flowering plants in New Caledonia. A taxonomic revision in progress for this archipelago estimates the number of species as 81, all of them endemic, and 25 of which are new to science. Four of them are described and illustrated here: P. fambartiae, P. ireneae, P. nigotei and P. veillonii. Robust morphological characteristics were found to distinguish these four from other New Caledonian species. Psychotria veillonii, which is known only from the massif of Tiébaghi, might already be extinct as a result of intensive nickel mining in the area. According to the IUCN criteria, P. nigotei, should be considered Critically Endangered as it occurs only in two locations, which are close to one another; P. ireneae and P. fambartiae are considered Endangered and Vulnerable respectively, given their somewhat larger but limited distributions.

Few cytological studies have been conducted on the endemic Chilean genus Leucocoryne, which is comprised of 14 species and a number of populations whose taxonomy has not been elucidated. Eleven species/populations of Leucocoryne have been examined cytologically and L. ixioides (Hook.) Lindl., L. coquimbensis var coquimbensis F.Phil., L. narcissoides R. Phil., L. sp. `Alcones', L. sp. `Talinay' and L. sp. `Combarbalá' were observed to be 2n = 18; L. purpurea Gay, L. sp. `Ñague', L. sp. `Alicahue' and L. sp. `Pichicuy' are 2n = 10 and L. coquimbensis var alba had 2n = 14. Furthermore, a natural hybrid population of L. purpurea and L. coquimbensis var coquimbensis had individuals with 2n = 14 and 2n = 22 chromosomes in addition to the normal complement of 2n = 10 and 2n = 18. The results indicate that Leucocoryne with the exception of L. coquimbensis var alba is typically either 2n = 10 or 2n = 18 with a similar number of species or populations at each ploidy level. Furthermore, the hybrid population demonstrated that there is gene flow between the species at different ploidy levels.

The current checklist provides for each species of the Red Sea its records in the Gulf of Suez, Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea main basin and its general distribution.This new checklist of Red Sea fishes enumerates 1207 species, representing 164 families. Of these, 797 species were recorded from the Gulf of Aqaba and 339 from the Gulf of Suez. The number of species from the Gulf of Suez is evidently lower than the actual number not including 27 Lessepsian (Red Sea) migrants to the Mediterranean that most likely occur in the Gulf. The current list includes 73 species that were newly described for science since the last checklist of 2010. The most specious Osteichthyes families are: Gobiidae (134 species), Labridae (66), Apogonidae (59), Serranidae (including Anthiadinae) (44), Blenniidae (42), Carangidae (38), Muraenidae (36), Pomacentridae (35), Syngnathidae (34), Scorpaenidae (24) and Lutjanidae (23). Among the families of Chondrichthyes, the most specious families are the Carcharhinidae (18 species) and Dasyatidae (11). The total number of endemic species in the Red Sea is 174 species, of these, 34 species are endemic to the Gulf of Aqaba and 8 to the Gulf of Suez.

Preliminary surveys of brackish and freshwater habitats in the southeast and east of South Korea produced a total of fifteenspecies. Ten of these species are new records for Korea, and one additional species, belonging to the genus Tanycypris, isnewly described herein. Twenty-seven species of nonmarine ostracods are now reported from Korea, but this is probablyonly a small proportion of the actual number of species inhabiting the peninsula. The presence of Dolerocypris ikeyaiSmith & Kamiya, 2006, Cryptocandona brehmi (Klie, 1934), Cryptocandona tsukagoshii Smith, 2011, Physocypria nip-ponica Okubo, 1990 and Vestalenula cylindrica (Straub, 1952) on the Korean Peninsula demonstrates that these species are also distributed on the continent, and are not endemic to Japan.

Located in southwestern Maranhão, the Parque Nacional da Chapada das Mesas (PNCM), with an extent of about 160,046 ha, is completely inserted in the Cerrado phytogeographic domain. The topography is characterized by a plateau formation consisting of steep hills and medium-altitude mountains with flat tops, which give the PNCM its name. We present an annotated checklist of the mosses that occur in the PNCM. Our checklist includes 26 species of pleurocarpous mosses distributed in 10 families and 22 genera and two species of cladocarpous mosses of the family Orthotrichaceae. The most species-rich families of pleurocarpous mosses were Sematophyllaceae (7 spp.), Pylaisiadelphaceae (6 spp.), and Stereophyllaceae (4 spp.). Eleven species are recorded for the first time from Maranhão and three species are recorded for the first time in the northeast region of Brazil. Taxithelium pluripunctatum (Renauld & Cardot) W.R. Buck and Trichosteleum glaziovii (Hampe) W.R. Buck, are recorded for the first time from Maranhão and the Cerrado phytogeographic domain. Our results expand the knowledge of the Brazilian bryoflora and add distribution data for a number of species in Maranhão and the northeast region.

The family Harrimaniidae (Hemichordata: Enteropneusta) is revised on the basis of morphological characters. The number of harrimaniid genera is increased to nine by the addition of Horstia n. gen., Mesoglossus n. gen., Ritteria n. gen. and Saxipendium, a genus previously assigned to the monospecific family Saxipendiidae. The number of species is increased to 34, resulting from the description of five new species from the eastern Pacific — Horstia kincaidi, Mesoglossus intermedius, M. macginitiei, Protoglossus mackiei and Ritteria ambigua. A description is supplied for a sixth harrimaniid species, Stereobalanus willeyi Ritter & Davis, 1904, which previously had the status of a nomen nudum. Four harrimaniids previously assigned to the genus Saccoglossus are transfered to the genus Mesoglossus — M. bournei, M. caraibicus, M. gurneyi and M. pygmaeus, while Saccoglossus borealis is reassigned to the genus Harrimania. Notes on habitat and zoogeography are included for the seven foregoing species and a table of diagnostic characters for existing and new species and a dichotomous key to the enteropneust families and harrimaniid genera are provided. Finally, a phylogenetic hypothesis concerning the Harrimaniidae is postulated, with discussion on the evolution of the group.

The subgenus Brygoomantis in the Madagascar-endemic genus Mantidactylus contains 12 nominal species but is in urgent need of taxonomic revision as many additional, genetically divergent but undescribed candidate species have been identified. We here take a first step towards a better resolution of this group by describing a new species, Mantidactylus schulzi sp. nov., occurring at the Tsaratanana and Manongarivo Massifs, differentiated in genetic, bioacoustic and sometimes morphological characters from its closest relatives. We show that upon detailed study, most species in Brygoomantis can be delimited by concordant differentiation of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, and by bioacoustic and morphological differences. We flag this group of morphologically similar frogs as a test case where molecular data on historical type specimens by ancient DNA methods might be needed to reach a satisfying clarification of taxonomy and nomenclature. However, the status of the new species M. schulzi is not in doubt as it is morphologically distinct from most historical type specimens, and microendemic to a region in northern Madagascar from where no earlier names exist.

A taxonomic revision of Calytrix Labill., an Australian endemic genus of Myrtaceae, tribe Chamelaucieae, is presented. Lhotskya Schauer is reduced to a synonym of Calytrix. Seventy-two species are recognized of which the following 22 are described as new: C. amethystina, C. carinata, C. chrysantha, C. divergens, C. duplistipulata, C. eneabbensis, C. erosipetala, C. formosa, C. gurulmundensis, C. gypsophila, C. habrantha, C. islensis, C. microcoma, C. parvivallis, C. paucicostata, C. platycheiridia, C. praecipua, C. rupestris, C. similis, C. truncatifolia, C. verruculosa and C. warburtonensis. Two species comprise two subspecies each, of which one, C. simplex subsp. suboppositifolia, is also described as new. Other than autonyms the following new names result from the transfer of Calycothrix and Lhotskya species to Calytrix, and/ or changes in taxonomic rank: C, acuttfolia, C, breviseta subsp. stipulosa, C. brownii, C. drummondii, C. glaberrima, C. harvestiana, C. merrelliana, C. nematoclada, C. purpurea, C. smeatoniana and C. sylvana. Distinctive features of the morphology are discussed. A new term, cheiridium, is proposed for an apparently adaptive structure formed from the peduncle and persistent, connate bracteoles. Other biological aspects that are discussed briefly include floral biology, fruit and dispersal, and geography. An informal infrageneric classification, based largely upon floral features, is outlined. New taxa are illustrated. Distribution maps are provided for all taxa.

Xanthochorema neocaledonia sp.n.is described from New Caledonia, raising to seven the number of Hydrobiosidae (Trichoptera) species now known from New Caledonia. A key for discrimination of males of these seven species is presented, and distributional maps are included for all species. In addition, new records are included for Xanthochorema bifurcatum Schmid, 1989, Xanthochorema calcaratum Schmid, 1989, and Xanthochorema celadon Schmid, 1989.
