The taxonomic notes in this article are based on the result of an analysis of the protologues, relevant literature, and a study of herbarium specimens of Iris sect. Hexapogon. This section comprises species with bearded claw in both outer and inner segments of perianth. These are relatively poorly known psammophytes occurring mostly in the desert and semi-desert regions of some of the former Soviet Central Asian republics, as well as in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan (Baluchistan). It is now generally accepted that I. sect. Hexapogon comprises two species, I. falcifolia and I. longiscapa. The present study has shown that this section contains only I. longiscapa. The name I. falcifolia is for the first time reduced to a synonym of I. longiscapa. A neotype for the name I. longiscapa and lectotypes for the names I. falcifolia and I. filifolia are designated. Notes are provided on the original material for all the three considered names.

The Majella National Park is located in Abruzzo region (Central Italy) and covers an area of 740 Km2. An updated checklist of the vascular plants growing in the park is here presented on the basis of extensive field surveys carried out from 1982 to 2018, analysis of relevant literature and review of herbarium specimens kept in APP, FI, NAP, RO, and Herb. Magellense. The park’s flora amounts to 2,286 specific and subspecific taxa (including 11 hybrids), belonging to 118 families and 694 genera. According to our results, 201 taxa are endemic to Italy; 136 taxa are reported for the first time in the park, of which two taxa are new for Abruzzo region; 73 taxa have not been confirmed in recent times and 42 are doubtfully occurring taxa. The Park represents the southern or northern border of their Italian distribution of 137 taxa. Moreover, Poa ligulata is confirmed for the flora of Italy. The non-native flora amounts to 110 taxa. The number of taxa recorded in the Majella National Park is one of the highest in a protected area within the Mediterranean Basin.

Solidago ×niederederi Khek (1905: 22) is a hybrid between North-American S. canadensis Linnaeus (1753: 878) and European native S. virgaurea Linnaeus (1753: 880). Solidago canadensis was introduced to Europe in the 17th century (Kowarik 2003). It has spread invasively throughout Europe since the second half of the 19th century (Weber 1998), reaching, besides sites disturbed by human activity, also (semi)natural biotopes, as forest edges, abandoned meadows and field margins which are often inhabited by native S. virgaurea. Their hybrid was discovered for the first time in nature by a local schoolmaster Franz Niedereder in the area of Vorderstoder village (Austria). Niedereder sent a plant material of the assumed hybrid to Eugen Johan Khek (born in 1861, Neuhaus/Jindřichov Hradec; died in 1927, Vienna), the pharmacist and botanist who lived in Vienna since 1889 (Anonymous 1916). Khek described the hybrid species under the name S. ×niederederi in honour of his discoverer (Khek 1905). The protologue indicates that the relevant communication between Niedereder and Khek was going on between July 1900 (when they met for the first time) and February 1905 (when the hybrid’s description was published). Before its description, Khek studied the hybrid for four years and he saw a herbarium material from Niedereder as well as a living material. In the protologue, no particular herbarium specimens or illustrations had been indicated or associated with S. ×niederederi (Khek 1905).

Juno is one of the most disputable groups of the genus Iris s.l. (Iridaceae) and the largest part of its taxa are in need of typification. In the present paper, the nomenclatural types for 28 names (21 species, 7 varieties) of juno irises are designated. Most of the original material was collected from the Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union (especially Uzbekistan and Tajikistan), and the other part was from South Asia (Afghanistan and Pakistan). Lectotypes are designated for 27 names, or a typification remark is provided. Among them, the previous first-step lectotypification of 2 names has been finalized, and 2 epitypes are designated for lectotypified names. A neotype is also designated for the name Iris tubergeniana.

Abstract The aim is to study the morphological and ecological features of some nematode species of the genus Rhabdochona parasites of marinka fish in the Fergana Valley, Uzbekistan. Rhabdocona gnedini, Rhabdochona denudata and Rhabdocona hellichi turkestanica were detected as 5.3%, 7.9% and 3.7%, respectively. According to the Authors’ knowledge, Rh. hellichi turkestanica was recorded in Uzbekistan and Central Asian republics for the first time. Rhabdocona spp. were only detected in the intestine of marinkas lived in the mountain rivers Rezaksay, Chodaksay and small tributaries of the Syrdarya river in western Fergana. Some abiotic factors such as the flow rate, water temperature and high content of dissolved oxygen in it, as well as the nutritional characteristics of the fish can be most important factors to spread of Rh.denudata, Rh. gnedini, Rh. hellichi turkestanica in marinkas from mountain rivers of the Fergana Valley.

A total of thirteen names of the juno irises (Iridaceae) were published by the Russian botanist Aleksey Ivanovich Vvedensky (1898–1972), and now some of these names are in need of typification. The holotypes for the names Juno capnoides, J. hippolyti, J. inconspicua, J. nicolai, J. tadshikorum, J. vicaria, and J. zenaidae are here indicated; the lectotypes for the names Iris subdecolorata, Juno leptorrhiza, J. maracandica, J. popovii, and the neotype for J. svetlanae are here designated. Furthermore, the name Juno parvula is here validated. The original material was collected from the Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union (especially Uzbekistan) and deposited mainly in the Central Herbarium of Uzbekistan (TASH).

Sedelnikovaea baicalensis, the Siberian-Central Asian lichen species, is recorded for the first time for Europe. Based on all the known localities, including those first-time reported from Baikal Siberia, the peculiarities of the ecology and distribution of this species are discussed, the map of its distribution is provided. It is concluded that the species was erroneously considered earlier as a Central Asian endemic. The center of the present range of this lichen is the steppes of Southern Siberia and Mongolia. Assumptions are made that S. baicalensis is relatively young (Paleogene-Neogene) species otherwise it would have a vast range extending beyond Asia, and also that the Yakut locations of this species indicate that in the Pleistocene its range was wider and covered a significant part of the Northeastern Siberia but later underwent regression. Based on the fact that in the mountains of Central Asia the species is found only in the upper mountain belts, it is proposed to characterize it as «cryo-arid xerophyte» in contrast to «arid xerophytes». A conclusion is made that the presence of extensive disjunctions of S. baicalensis range between the Southern Pre-Urals and the Altai-Sayan Mountains or the Mountains of Central Asia is unlikely; the lichen is most likely to occur in the Urals and most of Kazakhstan.

This is a report of a revision of 565 herbarium specimens of lichens, lichenicolous or non-lichenized fungi and additional locality records of common species produced from a visit of the Russian-Finnish expedition to Vodlozersky National Park right after its foundation in 1991. The analyzed collection and field records represent the earliest information about the lichen flora of the territory of the park. In total, 177 species are listed including 173 lichens, 3 non-lichenized and 1 lichenicolous fungi. Xylographa rubescens is new to the Republic of Karelia. Twenty two species are reported for the first time for biogeographic province Karelia transonegensis; 47 species for the Karelian part of Vodlozersky National Park; and 17 species for the whole territory of the park.

A total of 46 species and two varieties of the traditionally interpreted genus Orthotrichum are currently known to occur in China. They represent five genera, including Orthotrichum (29 species), Lewinskya (14 species and two varieties), and Nyholmiella and Leratia that are represented by a single species each. The fifth genus Florschuetziella, also consisting of only one species, F. scaberrima, is an entirely neglected representative of the China’s moss flora. A list of all accepted taxa is presented and for each taxon all literature records and herbarium specimens are enumerated for provinces in which they have been recorded, and their distribution is mapped. A key to determination of Chinese orthotrichalean mosses is presented. A chronological list of 63 species and varieties and two designations, O. catagonioides and O. microsporum which have never been validly published, reported from China in the years 1892–2020 is presented. Four species, Orthotrichum brasii, O. hooglandii, O. elegans and O. gymnostomum are excluded from the bryoflora of China and Lewinskya affinis var. bohemica and Orthotrichum schimperi are recorded for the first time from this country. Phytogeography of the Chinese taxa of the orthotrichalean mosses is considered and they are grouped into eight phytogeographical elements and five sub-elements.

The session of IMEMO academic council in December 2010 discussed the problems of Central Asia in the context of the Afghan situation. In her keynote report D. Malysheva, doctor of political sciences, pointed at the increased attention to Central Asia by regional and international players. This is explained by the new and extremely worrying situation in neighboring Afghanistan. There is a prospect that NATO will lose the war in Afghanistan and that the coalition troops will be withdrawn from that country. In its turn, this generates a threat of Taliban’s return to power in this country. Thus, we cannot exclude the political upheavals in the Central Asian republics that will inevitably affect Russia's interests. The discussion highlighted Russia’s stable interest to Afghanistan both politically and economically.

Based on field investigations and a review of relevant literature and specimens, Agapetes leiocarpa is shown to be conspecific with A. atrosanguinea and thus is reduced as a synonym under the latter. The floral morphology of A. camelliifolia is described for the first time based on living collections from the wild. Revised descriptions, color plates and taxonomic notes of these two species are also provided.
