Sheathia jinchengensis (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta), a new freshwater red algal species described from North China

A new species of freshwater red algae, Sheathia jinchengensis, is described based on material collected from rocks in a clean and cold-water stream from the Jincheng region of Shanxi province in North China. Molecular sequences of rbcL and psbA genes were used to evaluate the phylogenetic relationship among samples of S. jinchengensis and other Sheathia species from several regions of the world. The results showed that S. jinchengensis formed an independent branch and separated from the previously published sequence data of other Sheathia taxa. From a morphological point of view, this new species differs also from other species of the genus by the smaller diameter of whorls (167.0–312.5 μm) and larger carpogonium diameter (17.0–29.0 μm). Comparison of sequence variation and thallus morphology with other Sheathia taxa resulted in the proposal of the new species—S. jinchengensis. Additionally, two endemic Batrachospermum species described earlier from China i.e., B. hongdongense and B. longipedicellata are now transferred to the genus Sheathia based on the present study as S. hongdongensis (S.L.Xie & J.Feng) Han, Nan, Feng, Lv, Liu, Kociolek et Xie comb. nov. and S. longipedicellata (Hua & Shi) Han, Nan, Feng, Lv, Liu, Kociolek et Xie comb. nov.

A new species of freshwater red alga, Sheathia matouensis, is described and illustrated based on material collected in spring water from the Hongdong region of Shanxi province, China. Phylogenetic analysis of sequence data from the rbcL and psbA indicated the separation between S. matouensis and the other species of genus Sheathia. Additionally, from a morphological point of view, S. matouensis differs from other species of the genus Sheathia by the smaller whorls and carpogonium. Therefore, the results based on both morphological observation and molecular evidences facilitated the proposal of this new species - S. matouensis. It represents another species in the freshwater red algal diversity in China and the description of this new species provides more molecular data for phylogenetic analysis of genus Sheathia.

Batrachospermum is a widely distributed genus in China. Nonetheless, many taxa recorded previously have no molecular data. In this study, a new species of Batrachospermum called Batrachospermum qujingense is described and illustrated from Qujing, Yunnan, Southwest China, based on morphological observations and a phylogenetic analysis. This species is distinguished morphologically from other species by dioecious thalli, straight carpogonial branches with 7–9 cells and stalked angled obovoid or inflated-clavate trichogynes. In addition, a phylogenetic analysis of the molecular data from the rbcL, COI-5P, and psbA genes indicated separation between the new species proposed in this study and other species in the genus Batrachospermum (4.0–5.3% for rbcL, 7.7%–10.6% for COI-5P, and 2.2–3.2% for psbA ). This is the first species of Batrachospermum reported in Yunnan and the third species of Batrachospermum with molecular data in China. The description of the new species and geographical distribution expands the diversity of freshwater red algae in China.

Dendronotus patricki, sp. nov. is a new species collected from a whalefall in the Monterey Canyon, California. This new species is characterised by having a small number of dorsal appendages compared with similarly sized species of Dendronotus Alder & Hancock, 1845. Anatomically, D. patricki, sp. nov. has a small prostate with just a few alveoli, a very small seminal receptacle situated near the distal end of the vagina, and a relatively short and small ampulla. The rachidian radular teeth of D. patricki, sp. nov. are unique among Dendronotus as they have a well differentiated, conical cusp with very small denticles on either side, but most denticles are located on the sides of the teeth, rather than on the sides of the cusp. Dendronotus patricki, sp. nov., is genetically distinct from other species of Dendronotus for which sequence data are available. A phylogenetic analysis of Dendronotus based on COI, 16S, and H3 sequence data reveals that D. patricki, sp. nov. forms a polytomy with Dendronotus orientalis (Baba, 1932) and a clade of the shallow temperate and cold water species. The tropical Indo-Pacific species D. regius Pola & Stout, 2008 is the sister group to all other Dendronotus species.

Using mitochondrial COI-5P and plastid rbcL genetic markers, the red algal species historically known in southern New England, USA, as Champia parvula is found to be genetically distinct from the species to which it has historically been aligned. This necessitates the description of a new species, C. farlowii, for plants from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York, USA. The new species is morphologically compared with true European C. parvula and congeners, especially those with similar features previously aligned under the same species name. Champia farlowii is a morphologically cryptic species, the sixth in the expanding C. parvula complex, with overlapping characteristic measurements despite differences at the range extremes, when compared to C. parvula.

Based upon COI-5P, LSU rDNA and rbcL sequence data, as well as its morphological characteristics, a new red algal species, Eucheumatopsis sanibelensis E.S.Peterson, C.W.Schneider et G.W.Saunders sp. nov., was discovered on the Gulf coast of Florida, USA and shown to be distinct from the generitype E. isiformis with a type locality in the eastern Caribbean Sea. The new more attenuate taxon from Sanibel Island represents only the second species in this newly described genus, a genus recently segregated from Eucheuma based upon significant molecular and morphological differences. The two species have overlapping geographic distributions in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but thus far E. sanibelensis is only known from a single location.

Stropharia populicola sp. nov., found during autumn under Populus spp. in Shanxi Province of North China, is described and illustrated. Stropharia populicola is similar and closely related to S. jilinensis and S. scabella but can be distinguished from the latter two species by the acanthocytes commonly present in the hymenium. Phylogenetic analysis supports its taxonomic position in the genus Stropharia.

The genus Colaconema, containing endophytic algae associated with economically important macroalgae, is common around the world, but has rarely been reported in Taiwan. A new species, C. formosanum, was found attached to an economically important local macroalga, Sarcodia suae, in southern Taiwan. The new species was confirmed based on morphological observations and molecular analysis. Both the large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rbcL) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI-5P) genes showed high genetic variation between our sample and related species. Anatomical observations indicated that the new species presents asexual reproduction by monospores, cylindrical cells, irregularly branched filaments, a single pyrenoid, and single parietal plastids. Our research supports the taxonomic placement of C. formosanum within the genus Colaconema. This study presents the third record of the Colaconema genus in Taiwan.

Small-subunit ribosomal RNA sequence data are presented for Rhodogorgon carriebowensis Norris et Bucher (Rhodogorgonales, Rhodophyta) and Galaxaura marginata (Ellis et Solander) Lamouroux (Nemaliales, Rhodophyta). Data for these species were included in a matrix consisting of small-subunit ribosomal RNA sequences for 70 taxonomically diverse red algal species. Distance, parsimony, and maximum-likelihood analyses of these data all strongly support (100% of bootstrap replicates for distance and parsimony) a close alliance between the Rhodogorgonales and Corallinales. Our alignment includes 19 species representing six florideophyte orders (Acrochaetiales, Batrachospermales, Corallinales, Nemaliales, Palmariales, Rhodogorgonales) in which pit plugs are characterized by two cap layers. Distance and parsimony analyses resolve a monophyletic lineage including all "two-cap-layer" species. Our parsimony-derived molecular phylogeny was used to test a published hypothesis of pit-plug evolution. Four aspects of Pueschel's hypothesis are consistent with the results of our molecular systematic study: (i) "naked" plugs represent the ancestral type, (ii) outer cap layers are homologous structures, (iii) domed outer caps are ancestral to plate-like outer caps, and (iv) cap membranes are a derived feature within the two-cap-layer lineage. Directions for future research are discussed. Three new species of Tricholomopsis were described and illustrated based on collections from Shanxi Province in North China. Tricholomopsis galeata sp. nov. is closely related to T. pteridiicola but distinguished from the latter by its large pileus with red to purple reddish fibrous scales and the absence of pleurocystidia. Tricholomopsis pallidolutea sp. nov. is similar to T. sulfureoides and T. flavescens in macromorphology but is differentiated from T. sulfureoides by its dark orange fibrous scales on the pileal surface and narrow basidiospores (avQ = 1.77 ± 0.33), and from T. flavescens by its abundant pleurocystidia. Tricholomopsis mitirubicunda sp. nov. is morphologically similar to T. rutilans but is distinguished from the latter by its abundant pleurocystidia. Phylogenetic analysis supported the taxonomic position of the three new species in the genus Tricholomopsis.

We describe a new Diploderma species from Southern Yunnan Province, China. It is morphologically similar to D. chapaense, D. hamptoni, and D. yunnanense, but can be distinguished from these three species and all other congeners by its unique morphometric and meristic characters, color patterns and localized distribution range. Moreover, phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial gene NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 sequence data also supports this point of view; the new species differs genetically from investigated congeners by percentage distance of 8.78 to 21.15%.
