Apios chendezhaoana (Fabaceae), an overlooked species and a new combination from China: evidence from morphological and molecular analyses

Apios chendezhaoana, a new combination derived from Sinolegumenea chendezhaoana, is recognized by both morphological and molecular evidence. It is a new member within Apios, and it is also an endemic and endangered species from East and South China. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that it could be sister to A. fortunei, but morphologically it differs from all its allies by its broad triangular leaflets with caudate apices, white corolla, pink markings on the lower part of the keel, and dilated style with tufted hairs beneath the stigma. We provide a detailed description, photographs, illustrations, and distribution map. We also estimate its conservation status according to IUCN criteria. A key to Apios is also provided, together with a brief revision.

Scorzonera amasiana Hausskn. and Bornm. was described from type specimens collected by J.F.N. Bornmueller in 1889 but it was not collected again until 1993, when it was found near Amasya, Turkey. Populations of S. amasiana were quite small at that limited locations and were vulnerable to human impacts. Therefore, suitable conservation strategies should be developed immediately in order to protect the species from probable extinction. Here, an additional three small populations are reported. Brief history, morphology, habitat and ecology of this endemic species have been discussed. Its current conservation status was reevaluated with respect to the latest IUCN criteria. Additionally, a detailed morphologic description for this species, field photographs, taxonomic and nomenclatural comments, and species conservation status assessed according to IUCN criteria are provided.

Iochroma amicorum M. Cueva, S. D. Sm. & S. Leiva (Solanaceae), a new species from cloud forests of Central Peru, is described and illustrated. Phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data suggest that Iochroma amicorum is closely related to I. nitidum, I. umbellatum, I. grandiflorum and I. tingoanum, which collectively form the “U” clade of Iochrominae. Certain morphological characteristics of calyx and corolla as well as the type of habitat appear to be common in species of this clade. Iochroma amicorum is easily distinguished from other members of the “U” clade by its campanulate or funnel-shaped corolla with short and slightly reflexed lobes, the presence of an expanded stapet at the point of filament insertion with short lateral extensions united to the corolla, and its globose usually white fruits with tinges of purple at the base. Distribution, phenology and are discussed together with the position of the new species in Iochrominae. Iochroma amicorum is assessed as Endangered according to IUCN criteria B1ab (i, iii)

The fungal genus Conidiobolus sensu lato was delimited into four genera based on morphology and phylogeny. However, the taxonomic placement of C. parvus has not been determined until now. Here, we show that C. parvus belongs to a distinct lineage based on mitochondrial (mtSSU) and nuclear (TEF1 and nrLSU) phylogenetic analyses. Phylogenetic analyses further revealed a new species as sister to C. parvus. We identified a synapomorphy uniting these lineages (azygospore production) that was not observed in other allied genera of the family Ancylistaceae, and erected a new genus Azygosporusgen. nov. for this monophyletic group, with a new combination, A. parvuscomb. nov. as the type species. Within Azygosporus, the novel species A. macropapillatussp. nov. was introduced from China based on morphological characteristics and molecular evidence, which is characterized by its prominent basal papilla, in comparison to other closely related species, measuring 7.5–10.0×5.0–10.0 µm. Our study resolved the phylogenetic placement of C. parvus and improved the taxonomic system of the Ancylistaceae family.

Turkish endemic taxon Onopordum bracteatum Boiss. & Heldr. var. arachnoideum Erik & Sümbül is transferred to O. myriacanthum Boiss. as O. myriacanthum subsp. arachnoideum (Erik & Sümbül) P?nar & Behçet comb. & stat. nov. It is characterized by the phyllaries with densely and persistently arachnoid hairs both inside and outside, and upper stem leaves are 2–8 cm far from capitulum. In addition, the pollen characteristics and achene features are presented. The conservation status of O. myriacanthum subsp. arachnoideum has been assessed according to IUCN criteria. A new orchid species, Cymbidium yunnanensis (Orchidaceae; Epidendroideae; Cymbidieae), from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Based on morphological and molecular analyses, we demonstrate that this new species is similar to C. floribundum, but it differs in its smaller size, leaves 5–15 cm, shorter scape, white flowers with pale purplish markings on its sepals and petals, lip with purplish red blotch, petals narrowly falcate oblong and lip midlobe nearly round with column foot 1.5–2.0 mm long. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid (matK, rbcL) DNA sequence data support C. yunnanensis as a new species.

Three new Magnolia species and a new record from Guatemala are described and illustrated. Two of the new species, M. javieri and M. oscarrodrigoi, are from Alta Verapaz Department and one, M. veliziana, is from Quiché Department. Additionally, M. faustinomirandae is newly reported for the flora of Guatemala. With this contribution, the number of native Guatemalan species increases from 11 to 15 species. An updated distribution map and a key to species are provided. Guatemala, particularly the north-wet-arc in the Maya Highlands, is now an important centre of diversification and endemism for Magnolia. The conservation status of the newly proposed species was unofficially assessed using IUCN criteria.

Hyphoderma etruriae is a very rare corticioid species, described originally from Italy and more recently reported from Macedonia, always growing on decayed wood of Juniperus spp. It was now found in Lisbon, on a stump of Cupressus lusitanica. Several authors have suggested that H. etruriae could be related to Hyphoderma capitatum and Hyphoderma orphanellum, and molecular analyses confirmed that these three species belong to the Hymenochaetales and are thus not closely related to Hyphoderma s. str. species. The monospecific new genus Lawrynomyces was proposed, to accommodate H. capitatum. According to multigene phylogenetic analyses (18S, 5.8S, 28S, RPB2), H. etruriae is in a well-supported clade with H. capitatum, both species sharing clampless hyphae, capitate cystidia, and an association with conifers. On the contrary, results do not support a close relationship between H. orphanellum and the H. capitatum-H. etruriae clade. The new combination Lawrynomyces etruriae is proposed, based on these results.

We describe and illustrate Paepalanthus capixaba, a new species of Paepalanthus ser. Paepalanthus. The species is endemic to Espírito Santo state and restricted to a very distinct and endangered area, which comprises a mosaic of quartzitic sandy patches within a granitic argillaceous site. The indument of leaves, spathes, and scapes is crucial to recognize the taxon as a unique entity. The species is compared to Paepalanthus klotzschianus, the morphologically most similar species. An official conservation status of critically endangered species was assessed by the Centro Nacional de Conservação da Flora committee. Comments on the occurrence area and the morphological variation of the species, as well as a distribution map, photos, and illustrations are provided.

Eupsophus migueli is considered a microendemic endangered species inhabiting the temperate Nothofagus forests of the Mahuidanche Range of southern Chile. However, this categorization is based on scarce data about its distribution and natural history. In order to assess these parameters, this article reports new geographic records obtained through intensive fieldwork between 2011 and 2016. Considering this, an updated distribution map for E. migueli is proposed, and new data about natural history traits and habitat use are provided. The information obtained in this study is discussed considering the zoogeographical importance of E. migueli, and confirms the species IUCN conservation status.
