Araliacothrips daweishanensis gen. et sp.n. is described from Southwestern China in the Thripidae, Panchaetothripinae. In the form of the pronotum and fore wing, and the sculpture on the tergites, this species resembles species of Helionothrips. It is referred to a new genus because the metathoracic endofurca is simple and transverse, the head has cheeks parallel but constricted behind eyes without an occipital apodeme or collar, and tergites III–VIII have a pair of sub-median curved or sigmoid setae. A morphologically similar genus, Aoratothrips, is recorded from China for the first time.

Urbanization has a great impact on the diversity of living organisms. Spiders, for example, have been shown to respond negatively (some orb weaving species) and positively (ground dwelling species) to urbanization. The effects of urbanization on crab spiders (Thomisidae) (sit-and-wait predators that generally ambush their prey on flowers and leaves) are not sufficiently known. This paper describes the Thomisidae community that inhabits green patches in a temperate Neotropical city, Cordoba, Argentina, and its surroundings, and ascertains whether there are differences in species richness, abundance and composition between urban and exurban sites. Samples were collected from 30 sites during the summer and spring of 2013 and 2014, using the garden-vacuum method. We compared the abundance, richness and composition of Thomisidae among three habitat categories (urban, suburban and external). Seven species in three genera, Misumenops, Wechselia and Tmarus, were detected. Misumenops was the most abundant genus in Córdoba, and Tmarus elongates Mello-Leitão, 1929 was collected in Argentina for the first time. The abundance, richness and composition of thomisid spiders did not differ between habitat categories, indicating that urbanization does not have a negative effect on the communities of these spiders in open green spaces. Site variability, on the other hand, does, suggesting that local factors may be more relevant than broad-scale factors to explain community patterns in this family.

A further study of the spider genus Clubiona Latreille, 1804 from Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China is presented. A total of ten species, eight of which new to science, are here addressed, raising from 18 to 27 the number of species of the genus known to the area. Clubiona didentata Zhang & Yin, 1998 is redescribed based on new specimens from type locality, with the first description of the female. C. kai Jäger & Dankittipakul, 2010 is newly recorded from China, and the female is reported for the first time. Seven of the new species here described belongs to four species groups: C. cochlearis sp. nov. (♂) and C. tiane sp. nov. (♂) from the C. corticalis species-group; C. tongi sp. nov. (♂♀) from the C. hystrix species-group; C. yueya sp. nov. (♂♀) and C. zhanggureni sp. nov. (♂) from the C. japonica species-group; and C. bicornis sp. nov. (♂) and C. subasrevida sp. nov. (♂♀) from the C. trivialis species-group. The eighth new species, C. jiandan sp. nov. (♂♀) is not readily assignable to any of the existing species groups.

No less than in modern times, law under imperial systems can do many things. Its enactment can be a focus for bureaucratic debate and struggle. Its implementation may provoke bitter resistance or creative adaptations. It can be ignored or it can spur unpredictable social change. In eighteenth-century southwestern China, law did all this: issues of law are paramount in the burst of Qing (1644–1911) expansion and Han Chinese colonization which brought many local non-Han societies directly under imperial governance for the first time. This paper examines both its development and its effects in the remote region of the Eastern Miao (Hmong) (see map), a group based on settled agriculture in the Hunan/Guizhou provincial border zone west of the Yuan river. It begins with administrative incorporation (which occurred in two stages in 1703–4 and 1727–32) and ends on the eve of the Miao uprising and its suppression in the 1790s.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is an important pathogen of cats that has two genogroups (GI and GII). To investigate the prevalence and molecular characteristics of FCVs in southwestern China, 162 nasal swab samples were collected from cats in animal shelters and pet hospitals. In total, 38 of the clinical samples (23.46%) were identified as FCV positive using nested RT-PCR. Phylogenetic analyses using 10 capsid protein VP1 sequences revealed that 8 GI and 2 GII strains formed two independent clusters. Additionally, three separated FCVs that were not clustered phylogenetically (two GI and one GII strains) were successfully isolated from clinical samples and their full-length genomes were obtained. Phylogenetic and recombinant analyses of a GI FCV revealed genomic breakpoints in ORF1 and ORF2 regions with evidence for recombinant events between GI sub-genogroups, which is reported in China for the first time. Furthermore, sera obtained from mice immunized independently with the three FCV isolates and a commercial vaccine were used to evaluate the cross-reactivity of neutralizing antibodies. The three separate FCVs were neutralized by each other at a 1:19 to 1:775 titer range, whereas the triple-inactivated vaccine was at a titer of 1:16, which suggested that different genogroup/sub-genogroup FCV strains exhibit significantly different titers of neutralizing antibodies, including the commercial FCV vaccine. Thus, our study revealed the genetic diversity and complex cross-reactivity levels of FCVs in southwestern China, which provides new insights for application in vaccination strategies.

The Neotropical crab spider genera Tobias Simon, 1895 and Epicadus Simon, 1895 comprise species with remarkable somatic morphology and confounding taxonomic history. The results of our recent cladistic analysis corroborate and extend preceding taxonomic assumptions in showing that Tobias is a junior synonym of Epicadus. In the present paper the six species recently transferred from Tobias to Epicadus are redescribed. Two new species are described based on both males and females: Epicadus dimidiaster sp. nov. and Epicadus tigrinus sp. nov.; the male of Epicadus granulatus Banks, 1909 is described for the first time. The diagnosis of the genus is revised, an identification key is provided, and information on geographical distribution is updated. Epicadus now comprises eleven species.

The genus Runcinioides is revised, including the redescription of R. argenteus Mello-Leitão, 1929 and R. litteratus (Piza, 1933). The male of R. litteratus is described and illustrated for the first time and Misumenops paranensis (Mello-Leitão, 1932) is here considered a junior synonym of R. argenteus. The known geographic distribution of both species is expanded with the inclusion of new occurrence data. Runcinioides pustulatus Mello-Leitão, 1929 and Runcinioides souzai Soares, 1942 are not related to the other species of the genus, and provisionally considered as incertae sedis.

Faberia is a perennial herbaceous member of Asteraceae that is mainly distributed in central and southwestern China. Nuclear (ITS) and plastid (psbA–trnH, rbcL, matK, and trnL–F) sequences representing five Faberia species were analyzed with maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference, all of which strongly supported the monophyly of Faberia. Faberia nanchuanensis, F. cavaleriei, and F. faberi from central China form a well-supported clade. Additionally, F. sinensis and F. thibetica from southwestern China also form a well-supported clade. Incongruence between nuclear and plastid fragments was interpreted as hybridization or limited character evolution in the plastid DNA. Faberia may have descended from hybridization between Lactucinae and Crepidinae. Besides phylogenetic results, Faberia nanchuanensis is recorded for the first time from Hunan Province, and F. sinensis from the Tibet Autonomous Region.

AbstractNumerous acritarchs and stromatolites have been discovered and studied from the Proterozoic Datian Formation of the Kunyang Group and the Meidang Formation of the Dongchuan Group in Sichuan–Yunnan area, southwestern China, and more than 80 oxygen isotope data have been obtained from the sediments. Based on size-range and variation of non-filamentous acritarchs, the development of columnar stromatolites and the 18O/16O values of stromatolitic and nonstromatolitic carbonate rocks, the author proposes, for the first time, a palaeoenvironmental framework of the Kangdian area during Datian–Meidang time.Although the usefulness of Precambrian acritarchs and oxygen isotope values in palaeoenvironmental analysis of a sedimentary basin is just beginning to be understood, it is evident that these data are an important basis for palaeoenvironmental studies.
