Nothobranchius kadleci, a new African annual killifish species, is described from the drainages of the Save, Gorongose, Pungwe and Zangue Rivers in the Sofala Province of central Mozambique. Nothobranchius kadleci is similar to Nothobranchius furzeri from which it is distinguished by colouration (red pelvic fins, red lips, more extensive red colouration on body) and morphology (larger distance between pectoral and pelvic fins, shorter anal and dorsal fins, and shorter base of the anal fin). The currently known distribution of these two species is allopatric, with the N. kadleci range north of the N. furzeri range. Nothobranchius kadleci occurs sympatrically with Nothobranchius orthonotus and Nothobranchius rachovii, from which it can clearly be distinguished by different colour patterns of the fins and body, head shape and morphometric characteristics. A total of 12 populations were recorded between the northern bank of the Save River and southern bank of the Zambezi during collection trips in February 2008 and February 2009.

In the oceanic zones of the Gulf of Mexico a new species of diatom was found belonging to the genus Halamphora. Live cells were isolated using basic microbiological techniques for culturing and DNA analysis. Observations to determine morphological and morphometric characteristics were performed by both light and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, a phylogeny was built based on the expression and sequencing of the small subunit of the 18S gene. As a result of these observations, we conclude that this pennate diatom is a new species here proposed as Halamphora oceanica.

We describe a new species, Aspidura desilvai sp. nov., closely resembling A. trachyprocta and the last addition to the genus A. ravanai, from Knuckles massif, Matale District, of Sri Lanka. The species represents the ninth species of the genus known from Sri Lanka, and is readily distinguished from all other congeners by its colour pattern, the scale nature in the ischiadic region, and morphometric characteristics specially from its ratio between the snout to eye distance to its eye width. The species is currently known only from the type locality.

A new species belonging to the speciose genus Electrogena Zurwerra & Tomka, 1985 is described based on all stages from material collected in Switzerland, northern Italy and Slovenia. Electrogena brulini Wagner sp. nov. is closely related to E. gridellii (Grandi, 1953). A genetic analysis based on the mitochondrial gene CO1, including 9 specimens from 5 populations, reveals a K2P distance of 22% between both species. Our investigations demonstrate that the description of the nymph of E. gridellii sensu Belfiore (1996) refers in fact to both species. Therefore, E. gridellii is redescribed in all stages. The number of bristles on each mandibular prostheca in the nymphs, the shape of titillators in male genitalia and the shape of the subanal plate in female imagines are the main characters allowing discrimination of these two species. This study also shows that in this case it is possible and helpful to use colour patterns to separate two closely related species. The re-examination of the type material of Electrogena vipavensis Zurwerra & Tomka, 1986 described from western Slovenia indicates that this species is a junior subjective synonym of E. gridellii.

The Indo-West Pacific alpheid shrimp genus Athanopsis Coutière, 1897 is briefly reviewed. Athanopsis platyrhynchusCoutière, 1897, the type species, is reassessed using Coutière’s illustrations and morphological notes scattered throughouthis monograph of the family Alpheidae (Coutière 1899). Athanopsis brevirostris Banner & Banner, 1981, originally de-scribed on the basis of a single immature specimen missing both chelipeds, is reported and illustrated based on fresh ma-terial from Madagascar and southern Japan. Athanopsis gotoi sp. nov. is described based on two fresh specimens fromsouthern Japan, both found associated with thalassematid echiurans, and an additional, older museum specimen from In-donesia. The colour patterns of A. brevirostris, A. gotoi sp. nov., A. saurus Anker, 2011, A. rubricinctuta Berggren, 1991,and A. australis Banner & Banner, 1982, are contrasted to facilitate their identification in the field. A morphology and colour based key to all presently known species of Athanopsis is also provided.

AbstractA new species of a parasitic copepod, Acanthochondria helicoleni sp. nov. (Copepoda, Chondracanthidae), is described and illustrated from specimens collected within the branchial chambers of the rubio, Helicolenus lahillei Norman, 1937, from the Argentinean waters. The new species most closely resemble A. serrani Braicovich et Timi, 2009 collected in the same region, but differs in the general measurements and proportions of the body; primarily by the relative length of neck, shape of head, shape and size of genito-abdominal tagma and relative size of the trunk postero-lateral processes.

A new alysiine genus (Braconidae, Alysiinae, Alysiini) from SE China, Dacnulysia gen. nov. (type species: D. chaenomastax sp. nov.) with aberrant mandible and head shape is described and illustrated. A new species of the genus Phaenocarpa Foerster, 1863, with an aberrant ovipositor, P. platychora sp. nov., from SE China is included as type species in a new subgenus, Clistalysia nov. A key to the subgenera of Phaenocarpa Foerster is included; Idiolexis Foerster, 1863, and Kahlia Ashmead, 1900, are recognised as valid subgenera.

A new species of Cnemaspis, C. ranwellai is described from Gannoruwa in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. This species differs from all other Cnemaspis species by having 12–15 femoral pores and having spine-like tubercles on the body and tail. Males have a distinct yellow colour in the throat area. It is similar to Cnemaspis jerdoni scalepensis Ferguson, 1877, but differs from the former by having spine-like tubercles in the tail, a fewer number of ventral scales at mid ventral region, presence of dorsal tubercles in the mid body area and by having completely different colour patterns in the throat and dorsal neck region.

Quadricomoides, gen. nov., is an unusual genus of nematodes in several important morphological characters including the presence of a triradially symmetric head end and the structure of the oesophagus with a terminal symmetric bulb. The genus is represented by four new species: Q. coomansi, sp. nov., is characterized by the rectangular shape of its head, by fine spines which line the buccal cavity and interlock like a zip fastener, and by the shape of the spicules and the complex gubernaculum accompanied by a strongly developed muscular system; Q. alleni, sp, nov., is distinguished by its dome-shaped triradially symmetric head end and by the presence of a tubular structure at each Side of the vas deferens at the level of concretion rings 22-25; Q. pedunculata, sp. nov., is close to Q. coomansi in its comparable head shape but is different in several aspects including the presence of long peduncles to the somatic setae and the position of the connection between the internal differentiation and the outer wall of the oesophageal bulb (i.e. halfway along and sublateral instead of terminal and subventral). A female specimen from the Bahamas, identified by Timm (1970) as Quadricoma loricata Filipjev, 1922, is placed in the new genus and considered as a new species. Quadricoma angulocephala Freudenhammer, 1975, and Quadricoma magna Timm, 1970, are transferred to Quadricomoides.

A new species of the genus Alpheus Fabricius, 1798, A. mannarensis sp. nov. is described and represented based on the materials collected from the shallow and rocky reefs, Gulf of Mannar (Thoothukudi waters), Southern India. This is the first report of Alpheus species from the Gulf of Mannar region. The new species is assigned to the Alpheus brevirostris group, and is distinguished from other species of this group by the combination of the following features: rostral ridge lower than orbital hood in lateral view and postrostral carina not extended to the middle of the carapace, palm of major chela with a transverse groove near the base of dactylus, the ultimate segment of the third maxilliped slender, fingers of minor chela of male slightly longer than palm, the first carpal segment of second pereiopods shorter than second segment, merus of third pereiopods slender and unarmed, dactylus of third pereiopods slender and subspatulate, and unique colour patterns of longitudinal light lines on the reddish body.

A new species of porcelain crab, Petrolisthes lazarus sp. nov., is described from the Pacific coast of Panama, based on two female specimens. The new species is morphologically most similar to another eastern Pacific species, P. crenulatus Lockington, 1878, especially in the general configuration of the carapace, chelipeds and ambulatory legs. However, P. lazarus sp. nov. can be separated from P. crenulatus by the differences in the proportions of the carapace, the shape of the frontal region of the carapace, and the setation pattern of the cheliped. In addition, P. lazarus sp. nov. and P. crenulatus appear to be allopatric, the latter species presently being known only from Mexico. Among other eastern Pacific taxa, P. lazarus sp. nov. may have some affinities with P. ortmanni Nobili, 1901 and P. lewisi (Glassell, 1936), from which it can be easily distinguished by the chelipeds lacking a dense field of setae on the outer (lateral) surface of the palm and with different proportions of some articles, especially the carpus. The four species can also be distinguished from each other by their diagnostic, although somewhat variable colour patterns.
