Quantitative attemps to assess species diversity in the absence of a robust taxonomy are questioned. In addition, the sampling methods may be a major source of uncertainty, as illustrated in a commented biodiversity study of the Coleoptera of Sabah. The Sabah members of the staphylinid genus Baeocera Erichson are reviewed and keyed, the following new species are described: B. omnigena Löbl sp. nov., B. rudis Löbl sp. nov., B. secreta Löbl sp. nov., B. sedata Löbl sp. nov., B. segregata Löbl sp. nov., B. seiugata Löbl sp. nov., B. semirufa Löbl sp. nov. Baeocera barbara Löbl, B. obliqua (Löbl), B. rufula (Löbl) and B. serendibensis (Löbl) are reported for the first time from Malaysia, B. doriae (Pic) and B. sarawakensis Löbl are new to Sabah and B. kinabalua Löbl is new to Sarawak. Key words: biodiversity, trends, taxonomy, insects, shining fungus beetles, Borneo

Recent revision of Cretaceous and Paleocene brachyurans in the collections of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has revealed the presence of several new species. Based upon these fossils and their ages, it is evident that they played a pivotal role in the origination and subsequent dispersal of decapod crustaceans within the eastern North Pacific.

The Cretaceous and early Cenozoic species of the shallow-marine, warm-water bivalve Plicatula from California (United States) and Baja California (Mexico) are reviewed, and three new species are named. All of these species are representatives of Plicatula and not of the closely related taxon Harpax, which is associated with high-latitude and cool-water regions. The earliestknown Cretaceous species of Plicatula from the study area is P. variata Gabb, 1864, from Lower Cretaceous (Hauterivian Stage) strata in northern California, and our studies show it to be conspecific with Plicatula onoensis Anderson, 1958.Plicatula allisoni new species is from Lower Cretaceous (Albian Stage) strata in Baja California, Mexico. Plicatula modjeskaensis new species is from Upper Cretaceous (Turonian Stage) strata in the Santa Ana Mountains, southern California. A possible new species from the same strata is also mentioned. A poorly preserved specimen of Plicatula? sp. is known from Upper Cretaceous (upper Campanian to lower Maastrichtian) strata in northern California.The only Paleocene species of Plicatula from the study area is P. ostreiformis Stanton, 1896, from lower Paleocene strata of Lake County, northern California, and our studies show it to be conspecific with Ostrea buwaldana Dickerson, 1914. The only previously described Eocene species of Plicatula from the study area is P. juncalensis Squires, 1987, from lower middle Eocene (“Capay Stage”) strata of Los Angeles County, southern California. Plicatula surensis new species is from middle lower Eocene (“Capay Stage”) strata in Baja California Sur, Mexico. In addition, there is a Plicatula? sp. from Eocene strata of Baja California Sur, Mexico.Although Plicatula is of uncommon occurrence north of Baja California, its thermophilic trait makes it useful in recognizing periods of warm climate.

Placement in the genus Myxia is supported by molecular analysis of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S loci as well as morphological characters.

A new species of Myxia Bahder & Bartlett (Cixiidae: Cixiinae: Oecleini) is established as Myxia baynardi sp. n. collected from native palms in cloud forest habitat in Costa Rica. Placement in the genus Myxia is supported by molecular analysis of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S loci as well as morphological characters. Haplaxius delta (Kramer) was collected along the Caribbean coast as a new country record for Costa Rica. Based on morphological characters observed and molecular analysis of COI and 18S, H. delta is herein moved to the genus Myxia.

Recent survey work on palms in Costa Rica has resulted in the discovery of several new species of Derbidae, especially in the Cenchreini. During a recent expedition, specimens collected by light trapping at the Hotel Villa Blanca (cloud forest) were determined to be a novel species of Omolicna Fennah. Sequence data was generated for the novel taxon for the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S loci. Pairwise analyses and phylogenetic analyses support placement of the novel taxon in Omolicna.

The scarce fossil record of stomatopod crustaceans is extended with three new species and two new genera described from the Miocene of California. Squilla laingae new species and Angelosquilla altamirensis new genus and species show clear affinities to the Recent family Squillidae. Topangasquilla gravesi new genus and species can be accommodated within the Recent family Lysiosquillidae. These new species occur in the Monterey and Topanga Formations in Los Angeles County. In addition, three other specimens are described from the Miocene Topanga Formation. The preservation of these stomatopods is among the best noted for any fossils of this group. These specimens show characteristic stages of decay that clearly correspond with those noticed in taphonomic experiments with Recent stomatopods.
