Caprellidae (Crustacea: Peracarida: Amphipoda) from deep-sea waters off Galicia (NW Iberian Peninsula) with the description of a new genus and three new species

The Caprellidae (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Senticaudata) from the upper continental slope of Galicia (NW Iberian Peninsula) was studied. The material collected, based on surveys conducted from 2002 to 2009, comprised 11 species. A new genus Selvacaprella gen. nov., and three new species Selvacaprella jimenoi sp. nov., Liropus vitucoi sp. nov. and Liropus willyi sp. nov. are described. Pedoculina cf. bacescui and Parvipalpina cf. verrucosa are also figured in detail. Parvipalpina cf. verrucosa and Caprella cf. ciliata enlarge their distribution range ca. 2000 km to the South. Pedoculina cf. bacescui represent the first record of the genus for the Atlantic. These three species are also first records for the Iberian Peninsula. The total number of known caprellid species in the Iberian Peninsula (including adjacents waters of Ceuta, Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Azores and Madeira) is 50 so far, making this area one of the most diverse in the world for this group of amphipods.

A diverse eutardigrade fauna of the family Eohypsibiidae Bertolani & Kristensen, 1987 was collected on the Faroe Islands. The first record of Bertolanius weglarskae (Dastych, 1972) and new records of Eohypsibius nadjae Kristensen, 1982 are documented. The new genus Austeruseus is established and three new species, Austeruseus faeroensis, nov. sp., A. balduri nov. sp. and A. rokuri nov. sp. are described. The genus differentiates from the genera Bertolanius and Eohypsibius in the buccal tube. The apophyses for the insertion of stylet muscles are (two or six) lateral hooks and the entire length of the mouth and buccal tube are straight in Austeruseus, while Bertolanius and Eohypsibius have the apophyses for the insertion of stylet muscles as crests with ventral and dorsal hooks, and the mouth and buccal tube are flared or trumpet shaped. With five species the Faroese tardigrade fauna is the richest in the world with regard to the family Eohypsibiidae. The genus Austeruseus is primarily found in mosses at high mountain biotopes, and the new genus may be a glacial relic.

AbstractAngilovelia n.gen. is described with Velia y-alba Paiva, 1918, from Burma as type-species and only included species. It has stridulatory devices similar to those found in species of the Neotropical genus Stridulivelia Hungerford. Three new species of Angilia Stål subgenus Adriennella Poisson are described, A. orientalis n.sp. (Thailand, Hong Kong), A. bispinosa n.sp. (Thailand), and A. trispinosa n.sp. (Malayan Peninsula?). The Palaearctic genus Velia Latreille reaches the border zone between this region and the Oriental region. V. (Plesiovelia) affinis Kolenati ssp. marussii Tamanini, described from Hindukush (Afghanistan, Pakistan), is here recorded from Kashmir (India) and the first species of the genus is described from China, V. (Haldwania) sinensis n.sp. A key is given to the genera and subgenera of Veliinae of the world.

A new species of subterranean japygid dipluran belonging to a new genus is diagnosed and described from the eastern Iberian Peninsula. The new species is highly adapted to hypogean life with very obvious troglobiomorphic features: unpigmented cuticle, an extraordinary lengthening of thorax and appendixes, multiplication of antennomeres and supernumerary placoid sensilla, not just in the apical antennomere but also in the preceding antennomeres. These traits make it the most exceptional of all the hypogean Japygidae known to date, with troglobiomorphic characteristics more accentuated than in other hypogean taxa known in the rest of the world. The cercal armature of the Burmjapyx type (Silvestri, 1930; sensu Paclt, 1957) together with the characteristics of the glandular organs of the first urosternite set it apart from the known Japygidae. However, those characteristics prove insufficient to establish a relation with other genera. It is therefore the only manifestly hypogean japygid species in the Iberian Peninsula, where only Metajapyx moroderi Silvestri, was known in certain caves of the eastern reaches of the Prebetic range. The new species has been located inside six average-sized underground caves, generally in the deepest areas, and may be one of the major hypogean predators in the Iberian Peninsula, with a diet that ranges from Acari to Anillini carabids. Its distribution along the limestone regions of the coastal ranges in the east of the Peninsula coincides with that of paleo-endemic troglobites. Therefore, it is possible to infer a remote origin for this species, as suggested by its high level of specialization in the subterranean ecosystems.

Five species of Caprellidea (Amphipoda) occur on a benthic transect between Gay Head, Massachusetts and Bermuda. Three species, Caprella rinki Stephensen, Mayerella limicola Huntsman, and Proaeginina norvegica (Stephensen) are refigured and redescribed. A new species of Thorina and a new genus and species are described from bathyal and abyssal depths. All five species are arctic–boreal in affinities and may be expected to range south only to Cape Hatteras on the continental slope, but much farther south at abyssal depths.

A new genus and three new species of eriophyoid mites of the family Eriophyidae are described and illustrated from various Coprosma species in New Zealand: Calareolata gen. nov., Calareolata coprosmae sp. nov., Cosetacus mamangi sp. nov. and Aculus robustalucidus sp. nov.. A key to the eriophyoid mites associated with Coprosma species in the world is provided.

The chordeumatidan fauna of the Iberian Peninsula is far from being well known, but recent efforts are improving that knowledge. Samplings carried out in the Milieu Souterrain Superficiel (also known as the Mesovoid Shallow Substratum) on several screes of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park (central Spain) have led to the discovery of a new species of chordeumatidan millipede. This new species belongs to the family Haplobainosomatidae, which is mainly known from the northern Iberian Peninsula, and thus this is the first record of the family in central Spain. However, the extremely simple gonopods of this species are so different from all other known species of the family that it must be placed in a new genus. In this work, a complete description of the species, named as Guadarramasoma ramosae gen. & sp. nov., with a detailed iconography based on scanning electron microscopy images is provided together with a distribution map and a brief discussion of the implications of this new finding.

Shield-backed katydids of tribe Arytropteridini Caudell, 1908 are recorded for the first time in Madagascar. The new genus Toliaridectes n. gen. is proposed to include three new species from the south west of the island: Toliaridectes meridionalis n. gen. n. sp., Toliaridectes wendenbaumi n. gen. n. sp. and Toliaridectes antsycurvis n. gen. n. sp.. Elements of biology of Toliaridectes n. gen. are given and the call of Toliaridectes antsycurvis n. gen. n. sp. is described. The taxonomic position of Arytropteridini is discussed.
