Over-splitting destabilizes the taxonomy of hylaranine frogs: A response to Chandramouli et al. (2020)

In a recent article, Chandramouli et al. (2020) re-assessed the systematic position of the hylaranine frog Indosylvirana nicobariensis and proposed a new monotypic genus, Bijurana, for this species. The authors re-examined the type series of specimens and attempted to justify the recognition of a new genus using morphological and phylogenetic data. They concluded that the taxon’s unique phylogenetic position, high genetic divergence (uncorrected p-distance ≥ 13.64% of the 16S rRNA mitochondrial gene), and a unique combination of morphological characters warranted the erection of the new genus.

Senodoniini is a small lineage of click beetles currently comprising 21 species in two genera, distributed in the Himalayas and East and Southeast Asia. The definition and limits of this group have changed considerably during its history. Recent authors treat Senodoniini as a tribe within Dendrometrinae, usually close to Dimini, but this placement has never been rigorously tested. Here, we shed new light on the systematic position and limits of Senodoniini by performing a combined phylogenetic analysis of two nuclear and two mitochondrial molecular markers. Our results recovered Senodoniini not monophyletic, and placed them into the Lissominae complex, where they formed a clade with Austrelater Calder & Lawrence (Protelaterini). Molecular phylogeny is in agreement with the adult morphology. Additionally, we examined the morphology of a monotypic genus Rostricephalus Fleutiaux from Southeast Asia, which was previously classified in various Elateridae groups including Senodoniini, and its position was always uncertain. This genus shares morphological characters with Protelaterini. We provide morphological redescriptions as well as the figures of main diagnostic characters for Senodonia Laporte, Sossor Candèze, and Rostricephalus. Based on our results, we place these genera to Lissominae: Protelaterini, and hence synonymize Senodoniini Schenkling with Protelaterini Schwarz.

A new genus and species of goby, Gymnesigobius medits sp. nov., is described from the western Mediterranean slope bottoms at the Balearic Islands. The new goby belongs to the Gobius-lineage (Gobiinae). Examination of the single known specimen exhibits a unique combination of morphological characters which could not be fitted to any known genus. Gymnesigobius gen. nov. is morphologically distinguished from all other genera in the Gobius-lineage by the following combination of characters: chin without fold or barbels; mouth terminal with anterior tip above horizontal level of lower eye edge; predorsal area and first dorsal fin base naked; pelvic fin anterior membrane well developed; head with anterior oculoscapular and preopercular canals, posterior oculoscapular canal absent; pores of head canals enlarged, e.g. pores α and ρ larger or of about the same size as interspaces to pore β; six transverse suborbital rows of sensory papillae, four continuous suborbital rows in front of row b, fifth row divided in three parts but in front of row b, sixth row just as superior part above row b and below pore α; longitudinal suborbital row b barely reaching forward to the vertical from posterior edge of eye. A full description of the new genus and species is provided. The new species, collected at a depth of between 344 and 364 m (mean depth of 354 m), is one of very few gobiid species found at bathyal depths.

Diplazoptilon is a monotypic genus belonging to the Saussurea group (Asteraceae, Cardueae). We undertake micromorphological and molecular studies to discuss the systematic position of this genus. The achene of Diplazoptilon picridifolium is obconical, 4-angled, with a small crown on the apical rim. The pollen of D. picridifolium are spheroidal, narrowly tricolpate, with the exine reticulate and shortly spinulate. The micromorphological characters of D. picridifolium are well in accordance with those of the genus Saussurea. Our molecular analyses demonstrate that Diplazoptilon and Saussurea form a strongly supported clade. Taking into account the great similarities in achene, pappus and pollen morphology between Diplazoptilon and Saussurea, it is reasonable to merge Diplazoptilon with Saussurea. From our molecular work and the gross-morphological characters, D. picridifolium should be a member of Saussurea subgen. Saussurea sect. Strictae. There are more than one species with a plumose outer pappus in the genus Saussurea, and the occurrences the plumose outer pappus in the genus Saussurea may have had parallel origins.

Morphological and phylogenetic analyses of large ribosomal subunit (28S rDNA) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS rDNA) of Terfezia samples collected from several bioclimatic zones in Algeria and Spain revealed the presence of six distinct Terfezia species: T. arenaria, T. boudieri, T. claveryi; T. eliocrocae (reported here for the first time from North Africa), T. olbiensis, and a new species, T. crassiverrucosa sp. nov., proposed and described here, characterized by its phylogenetic position and unique combination of morphological characters. A discussion on the unresolved problems in the taxonomy of the spiny-spored Terfezia species is conducted after the present results.

The identity of the rare xanthid crab, Pilumnoplax acanthomerus Rathbun, 1911, originally described from the AmiranteIslands in the western Indian Ocean, is elucidated. Števčić (2005) transferred the species from Pilumnoplax Stimpson,1858, to a new genus, Linnaeoxantho. This monotypic genus is re-diagnosed and new morphological characters are high-lighted. New records from Ryukyu and Line Islands, in the western and central Pacific, respectively, are reported. Linnae-oxantho is compared with the morphologically similar Melybia Stimpson, 1871, from the western Atlantic, and theiraffinities are discussed. Linnaeoxanthinae Števčić, 2005, is here recognised as a valid xanthid subfamily for Linnaeoxantho and Melybia, and is considered to have priority over Melybiidae Števčić, 2005.

A new monotypic genus, Turneroconcha, is established for T. magnifica (Boss & Turner) which was originally assigned to the genus Calyptogena Dall. The distinguishing morphological characters of the new genus are the combination of both conchological and anatomical features including: the presence of only two tooth elements in the right valve; submerged location of the posterior part of the posterior lamellar ligament layer; the absence of a subumbonal pit, lunular incision, escutcheon and pallial sinus; the presence of both pairs of demibranchs; the tubular structure of marginal parts of the interlamellar septa in gills; an inner valve of the inhalant siphon without processes; tentaculate inner mantle fold 3 and a Z-shaped digestive tract. Analysis of morphological data on Recent and fossil pliocardiines shows that Turneroconcha gen. nov. can be presently considered as a monotypic genus. The comparative morphological analysis of the new genus with described pliocardiine genera is consistent with available molecular results. Turneroconcha gen. nov. is endemic to the East-Pacific Rise and Galapagos Rift and occurs at water depths of 2251 to 2791 m. It is the only pliocardiine genus known so far with a mainly epifaunal life habit. No fossils of Turneroconcha gen. nov. are known.

We reassessed the systematic position of the ranid frog Hylorana (=Hylarana) nicobariensis that, owing to its uncertain phylogenetic position and lack of clear morphological characterisation, has lately been allocated to various Asian and African frog genera such as Rana, Sylvirana, Hylarana, Amnirana, and most recently to Indosylvirana. Based on an integrative approach of both phylogenetic and morphological affinities, we describe a new genus to accommodate Hylorana (=Hylarana) nicobariensis and redescribe the species based on new topotypic material from the Nicobar Islands.

To reinvestigate the taxonomy of [Actinobacillus] muris, 474 strains, mainly from mice and rats, were characterized by phenotype and 130 strains selected for genotypic characterization by 16S rRNA and partial rpoB gene sequencing. The type strain was further investigated by whole-genome sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis of the DNA sequences showed one monophyletic group with intragroup similarities of 96.7 and 97.2 % for the 16S rRNA and rpoB genes, respectively. The highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to a taxon with a validly published name outside the group was 95.9 %, to the type strain of [Pasteurella] pneumotropica. The closest related taxon based on rpoB sequence comparison was ‘Haemophilus influenzae-murium’, with 88.4 % similarity. A new genus and a new combination, Muribacter muris gen. nov., comb. nov., are proposed based on a distinct phylogenetic position based on 16S rRNA and rpoB gene sequence comparisons, with major divergence from the existing genera of the family Pasteurellaceae. The new genus has the characteristics of [A.] muris with the emendation that acid formation from ( − )-d-mannitol and hydrolysis of aesculin are variable, while the α-glucosidase test is positive. There is no requirement for exogenously supplied NAD (V factor) for the majority of strains investigated; however, one strain was found to require NAD. The major fatty acids of the type strain of Muribacter muris were C14 : 0, C14 : 0 3-OH/iso-C16 : 1 I, C16 : 1ω7c and C16 : 0, which is in line with most genera of the Pasteurellaceae. The type strain of Muribacter muris is CCUG 16938T ( = NCTC 12432T = ATCC 49577T).

Abstract Cydistinae are a rare monogeneric beetle lineage from Asia with a convoluted history of classification, historically placed in various groups within the series Elateriformia. However, their position has never been rigorously tested. To resolve this long-standing puzzle, we are the first to present sequences of two nuclear and two mitochondrial markers for four species of Cydistinae to determine their phylogenetic position. We included these sequences in two rounds of analyses: one including a broad Elateriformia dataset to test placement at the superfamily/family level, and a second, including a richer, targeted sampling of presumed close relatives. Our results strongly support Cydistinae as sister to Phengodidae in a clade with Rhagophthalmidae. Based on our molecular phylogenetic results and examination of morphological characters, we hereby transfer the formerly unplaced Cydistinae into Phengodidae and provide diagnoses for the newly circumscribed Phengodidae, Cydistinae and Cydistus. Since both Phengodidae and Rhagophthalmidae have bioluminescent larvae and strongly neotenic females, similar features can be hypothesized for Cydistinae. Additionally, Cydistus minor is transferred to the new genus Microcydistus.

A new genus of Lygistorrhinidae, Asiorrhina gen. n., and a new species, Asiorrhina parasiatica sp. n., are described. Asiorrhina asiatica (Senior-White) comb. n. is redescribed and selected as the type species for the new genus. The systematic position of the new genus is discussed. All recent taxa of Lygistorrhinidae form a monophyletic group with the fossil genus Palaeognoriste Meunier as the sister group.
