We read the recent article by Sugawara et al with great interest.1 The authors described a 65-year-old patient with rheumatoid arthritis who had been treated with methotrexate for 14 years without any adverse effects, yet within the last 6 months had developed fever and abdominal pain when treated with 2 mg/day of tacrolimus and 4 mg of baricitinib.

Solving Paradox by Increasing Technological Capacity: A Critique of the Concept of Business Model Innovation at TikTok

ABSTRACT This paper comments on Yulun Ma and Yue Hu's (2021) recent article ‘Business Model Innovation and Experimentation in Transforming Economies: ByteDance and TikTok’. It argues that TikTok's international success is not due to so-called business model innovation; instead, it is because ByteDance has overcome three major hurdles facing emerging market firms pursuing internationalization. It also posits that the case of TikTok offers inspiration for theorizing paradox, namely, individuals and organizations can solve paradoxical tensions by increasing capacity through the use of advanced technologies.

The Representation of Gender and Inflectional Class in Italian: A Reply to Kučerová 2018

In a recent article, Kučerová 2018 (henceforth K18) puts forward a novel theory of the morphology and interpretation of nominal gender in Italian. This paper takes issue with this theory from both empirical and theoretical standpoints. We first show that several generalisations presented as empirical support for it are in fact incorrect. We then point out a series of fundamental challenges for the theory. First, the proposed three-way classification of nouns misrepresents the full range of facts, because it does not take into account plural morphology or the interdependencies of CLASS and GENDER features. Second, the account of gender mismatch in terms of “semiconservativity” fails to capture the Italian data, once the full paradigm is considered. Finally, K18’s use of Phase Theory to model contextual valuation of gender faces an insurmountable lookahead problem.

Curiosity might not help after all: Predicted trajectories for need for cognition and anxiety and depression symptoms based on findings by Zainal and Newman (2022)

In a recent article, Zainal and Newman (2022) reported that need for cognition (NFC) predicted anxiety and depression symptoms (ADS) across 10 years in a large (N = 6750) sample of community-dwelling adults, and furthermore that a within-person decrease in NFC was associated with an increase in ADS. Here, we analyze the modeling approaches used in that paper, and show that the two different modeling strategies employed give contradictory results, suggesting that the results are influenced by statistical artifacts and should be interpreted with caution.

Two examples related to conical energies

In a recent article (2021) we introduced and studied conical energies. We used them to prove three results: a characterization of rectifiable measures, a characterization of sets with big pieces of Lipschitz graphs, and a sufficient condition for boundedness of nice singular integral operators. In this note we give two examples related to sharpness of these results. One of them is due to Joyce and Mörters (2000), the other is new and could be of independent interest as an example of a relatively ugly set containing big pieces of Lipschitz graphs.

Smart Contract and Collaborative Platforms

The collaborative economy (CE) involves an intensification of peer-to-peer commerce either directly or through the presence of an intermediary. Collaborative online exchanges are supported by digital processes that involve increased use of new technologies. As an intrinsically connected economy, the EC is therefore inclined to integrate the most recent technological advances, in particular smart contracts. In a recent article, Ertz and Boily raised that this technology can have important impacts for the development of the CE the intensification of exchanges between peers. This chapter consists of a conceptual review analyzing how the CE connects to smart contract technology by observing in particular the motivations of users on digital sharing platforms. The chapter also presents the organizational and managerial implications associated with the implementation of smart contracts in terms of governance, transaction costs, and user trust on collaborative online platforms. A comparison with conventional contracts is also initiated.

Dialogue as a Response to the Psychiatrization of Society? Potentials of the Open Dialogue Approach

In recent decades, the use of psychosocial and psychiatric care systems has increased worldwide. A recent article proposed the concept of psychiatrization as an explanatory framework, describing multiple processes responsible for the spread of psychiatric concepts and forms of treatment. This article aims to explore the potentials of the Open Dialogue (OD) approach for engaging in less psychiatrizing forms of psychosocial support. While OD may not be an all-encompassing solution to de-psychiatrization, this paper refers to previous research showing that OD has the potential to 1) limit the use of neuroleptics, 2), reduce the incidences of mental health problems and 3) decrease the use of psychiatric services. It substantiates these potentials to de-psychiatrize psychosocial support by exploring the OD’s internal logic, its use of language, its processes of meaning-making, its notion of professionalism, its promotion of dialogue and how OD is set up structurally. The conclusion touches upon the dangers of co-optation, formalization and universalization of the OD approach and stresses the need for more societal, layperson competencies in dealing with psychosocial crises.

2020 Pennsylvania Patient Safety Reporting: Updated Acute Care Reporting Rates

In our recent article summarizing 2020 data from acute care facilities in Pennsylvania, reporting rates and fall rates were provided for Q1 and Q2 2020 based on the latest data we had available at the time of publication. Given that 2020 was an unpredictable year in healthcare, any forecasting of rates for Q3 and Q4 2020 would have been unreliable. Therefore, this data snapshot serves to complete reporting rates for 2020 now that all hospital patient days and surgical encounters data from 2020 have been made available for rate calculations.

Baricitinib for Refractory Eosinophilic Fasciitis: Myth or Reality?

We read the recent article by Sehgal et al with great interest.1 The authors described a 37-year-old patient with eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) who showed no improvement after an initial aggressive treatment strategy (intravenous [IV] methylprednisolone, prednisone, methotrexate, mycophenolate mofetil, and IVIG). Subsequently, the use of the Janus kinase ( JAK) 1/2 inhibitor baricitinib resulted in considerable improvement in the patient's symptoms and skin appearance. However, there are some details that need further clarification.
