New records of Cochylini moths (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) from the Balkans

In the course of expeditions conducted on the Balkan Peninsula by Ignác Richter in 2004–2019, altogether 45 species of Cochylini moths were collected. The examination of the collected specimens revealed one new species of the genus Aethes: Aethes larissae sp. nov., from the North Macedonia. Additionally, a new subspecies, Aethes kindermanniana macedonica ssp. nov. is described from the North Macedonia too. Phtheochroa amasiana (Ragonot, 1894) and Cochylimorpha erlebachi Huemer & Trematerra, 1997 are recorded from the Balkans for the first time. A male of Aethes eichleri Razowski, 1983 is collected for the first time, and DNA barcoding data of this species was obtained. We established a new synonymy: Aethes eichleri Razowski, 1983 syn. nov. of Aethes francillana (Fabricius, 1794). Illustrations of specimens and photographs of the genitalia of all described taxa are provided.

Ten new species and two new subspecies of the water mite genus Arrenurus are described from the Afrotropical region,i.e. Arrenurus abyssinicus n. sp., A. altomontanus n. sp., A. baleensis n. sp., A. bechuanicus n. sp., A. botswanicus n. sp.,A. coronopetiolatus n. sp., A. flavus n. sp., A. monocavus n. sp., A. okavango n. sp. and A. serratipetiolatus n. sp., A.chutteri longipes n. subsp., A. concavus longifissus n. subsp. One new species of the genus Thoracophoracarus is de-scribed, T. fluviatilis n. sp. The following taxa are proposed to the rank of a full species: A. chutteri K.O. Viets, A. damasiLundblad and A. grandis Walter & Bader. Arrenurus odonatophilus Müchberg is transferred to the subgenus Brevicau-daturus Smit, while A. discretus Cook is synonymized with the latter species. Arrenurus vanopus Cook is synonymizedwith A. capensis Thor, and the female of A. petri Cook must be assigned to A. capensis. The presumed female of A. petriis described therefore again. The male of A. latifoliatus K. Viets is redescribed and the female of this species is described for the first time.

A new species and eight new subspecies of Papilionoidea discovered in Vietnam between 2002 and 2020 are described and illustrated. The status of two taxa are revised. New taxa include Pieridae: Delias sanaca bidoupa Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov. and Talbotia naganum aurelia Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov.; Nymphalidae: Abrota ganga pulcheria Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Bassarona recta consonensis Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Pantoporia bieti aurantina Monastyrskii & To subspec. nov.; Ragadia latifasciata cristata Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Ragadia latifasciata crystallina Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Faunis indistincta luctus Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov. & Aemona gialaica Monastyrskii, K. Saito & Vu, spec. nov. The taxon infuscata Devyatkin & Monastyrskii, previously described as the subspecies Aemona tonkinensis infuscata, was elevated to the species level, while the taxon critias (Ragadia critias Riley & Godfrey) was reduced to a subspecies. Three Satyrinae species were recorded from Vietnam for the first time: Palaeonympha opalina Butler, 1871; Ypthima motschulskyi Bremer & Grey, 1853; and Ragadia latifasciata Leech, 1891.

According to previous reports, the number of cicada species known from Vietnam is 131; these represent 45 genera. Neotanna yunnanensis Lei et Chou, 1997 and Neotanna sinensis Ouchi, 1938 are transferred to Tanna Distant, 1905 to become Tanna yunnanensis (Lei et Chou, 1997) comb. nov. and Tanna sinensis (Ouchi, 1938) comb. nov., Proretinata vemaculata Chou & Yao, 1986 is transferred to Angamiana Distant, 1890 to become Angamiana vemacula (Chou et Yao, 1986) comb. nov.. Twenty additional species are here recorded for the fauna of Vietnam for the first time: Scolopita lusiplex Chou et Lei, 1997, Hea fasciata Distant, 1906, Hea yunnanensis Chou et Yao, 1995, Katoa chlorotica Chou et Lu, 1997, Mogannia effecta Distant, 1892, Nipponosemia guangxiensis Chou et Wang, 1993, Ambragaeana ambra Chou et Yao, 1985, Balinta tenebricosa (Distant, 1888), Gaeana cheni Chou et Yao, 1985, Gaeana hainanensis Chou et Yao, 1985, Sulphogaeana dolicha Lei, 1997, Paratalainga yunnanensis Chou et Lei, 1992, Formotosena seebohmi (Distant, 1904), Angamiana vemacula (Chou et Yao, 1986), Pomponia backanensis sp. nov., Purana guttularis (Walker, 1858), Tanna yunnanensis (Lei et Chou, 1997), Tanna sinensis (Ouchi, 1938), Euterpnosia ruida Lei et Chou, 1997, Inthaxara flexa Lei et Li, 1996, and Sinosemia shirakii Matsumura, 1927. One of these, Katoa chlorotica, is the first representative of the subfamily Tettigadinae and the tribe Tibicini for Vietnam. One new species, Pomponia backanensis sp. nov., is described and a key to species of Vietnamese Pomponia is provided.

Recent collecting in northern Vietnam yielded specimens of several new leafhopper species, two of which represent new monotypic genera, and several additional species not previously recorded from Vietnam. The two new genera (Hochiminus n. gen. and Pseudocestius n. gen.) and 15 new species (Abrus digitatus n. sp., Aeternus ninhbinhensis n. sp., Drabescoides bispinosa n. sp., Tenompoella vietnamensis n. sp., Uzelina (Uzelina) vietnamensis sp. n., Hochiminhus tamdaoensis n. sp., Pseudocestius cucphuongensis n. sp., Phlogothamnus pseudorugosus n. sp., Scaphoidella albopunctata n. sp., Bundera onukiiformis n. sp., Carinata arcuata n. sp., Traiguma hamocauda n. sp., Signoretia tamdaoensis n. sp., Amrasca (Quartasca) curvata n. sp., Amrasca (Quartasca) excavata n. sp.) are described and illustrated and comparative notes are provided. An additional 28 species representing 20 genera are newly recorded from Vietnam. Most of the latter were previously recorded only from southern China. The enigmatic species, Tardrabassus pakneunensis Dai & Dietrich, previously known from two males collected in Laos in 1918, is newly recorded from Vietnam based on recently collected female specimens. The ovipositor structure of the female confirms placement of Tardrabassus in Iassinae. The female pregenital sternite and ovipositor of Hamulotettix ungulatus Dai & Zhang are also illustrated for the first time. A new synonymy is also proposed: Ujna consors Distant, 1908 equals Mileewa puerana Yang & Meng, 2010, n. syn.

The Iberian Peninsula is part of the South European Atlantic Shelf within the Lusitanian ecoregion. Given the characteristics of this region, a great invertebrate biodiversity is expected. Nevertheless, no literature records of Polycladida are known for the Cantabrian Sea. Here, we report the presence of six polyclad species, including one new species.Notoplana vitrea, considered endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, was found in the Cantabrian Sea, demonstrating its presence in Atlantic waters. This species was previously reported for these waters on two natural history photographic websites: the importance of searching, indexing and disseminating this type of record for the scientific community is discussed.Discocelis tigrinais reported for the first time for the Cantabrian Sea, and is the northernmost record to date. In this paper,Pleioplana atomatais reported for the second time for the Iberian Peninsula, yet is the first record for the Cantabrian Sea. Although a literature record ofLeptoplana tremellarisfor the Iberian Peninsula exists, it is considered a misidentification ofL. mediterranea; therefore, this work provides the first record ofL. tremellarisfor the Iberian Peninsula. The cosmopolitan speciesCycloporus papillosusis also reported for the Cantabrian Sea. A new species,Imogine fafaisp. nov., is described and taxonomically compared with other species of the genus.

Filarioid nematodes (Nematoda: Filarioidea) parasitic in Australasian monotremes, marsupials and murid rodents are described from three genera, Breinlia (Breinlia), Pelecitus and Sprattia. New host and geographic records are presented for 24 previously described species from these genera, a second subgenus, Breinlia (Johnstonema) and an additional three genera, Cercopithifilaria, Monanema and Pelecitus. Nine species are described as new, B. (B.) beveridgei sp. nov. from the peritoneal cavity of Macropus parryi Bennett, B. (B.) bigenera sp. nov. from the peritoneal and pleural cavities of Aepyprymnus rufescens (Gray), Onychogalea fraenata (Gould), O. unguifera (Gould) and possibly Antechinus swainsonii (Waterhouse), B. (B.) dorcopsis sp. nov. from the peritoneal cavity of Dorcopsis hageni Heller and D. luctuosa (D’Albertis), B. (B.) melomyos sp. nov. from the peritoneal cavity of Melomys cf. burtoni, B. (B.) oweni sp. nov. from the peritoneal cavity of Dactylopsila trivirgata Gray, B. (B.) presidentei sp. nov. from the peritoneal cavity of Mesembriomys gouldii (Gray), M. macrurus (Peters) and the pleural and peritoneal cavities of Conilurus penicillatus (Gould), B. (B.) tricondylus sp. nov. from the peritoneal cavity of Macropus rufogriseus banksianus (Quoy & Gaimard), B. Breinlia (J.) andersoni Spratt & Varughese, 1975 from the subcutaneous connective tissues of Macropus rufus (Desmarest), M. giganteus Shaw, M. robustus erubescens Sclater and Wallabia bicolor (Desmarest) is placed as a synonym of B. (J.) annulipapillata (Johnston & Mawson, 1938) from the subcutaneous connective tissues of M. dorsalis (Gray), O. fraenata and W. bicolor. In general, filarioids predominate in macropodoid hosts and in the north of Australia.

The Neotropical genus Propetes Walker, 1851 currently includes three species recorded from Brazil and Guyana that share morphological characteristics related to wasp-mimicking behavior. A revision of available material of Amazonian Propetes was conducted, and a new species, P. sakakibara sp. nov., is described and illustrated herein based on males from Brazil, Peru, and Venezuela. Based on the association of males and females from Pará State (Brazil), a synonymy is proposed between P. triquetra (Fabricius, 1803) (previously known only from males) and P. compressa Walker, 1851 (previously known only from females). The female genitalia of P. triquetra is redescribed and illustrated in detail. Observation of bluffing display behavior is reported for the first time for the genus, in P. schmidti. A key to all species included in Propetes, based on males and females, and a map of distribution of Propetes species are provided, including new records of the genus from French Guiana, Peru, and Venezuela.

The aim of this study is to conduct a detailed taxonomic revision of the Poecilimon (Poecilimon) zonatus species-group (Orthoptera: Phaneropterinae) using both morphology and bioacoustics. Two new species (Poecilimon (Poecilimon) salmani, P. (P) azizsancar) and one new subspecies (P. (P) zonatus datca) are described. Based on the data, we conclude that the species complex can be separated into two subgroups (P. tauricola and P. zonatus). Within the P. zonatus subgroup, song structures indicate P. variicercis as basal branch since producing two syllable types is possibly a derived character. From both, from bioacoustics and morphology, it is concluded that the relationships between species of the group are as follows: P. tauricola subgroup (P. tauricola + P. azizsancar) + P. zonatus subgroup (P. variicercis + (P. varicornis + (P. zonatus zonatus+P. zonatus datca)) + (P. salmani+P. vodnensis)))). Except for two species (P. vodnensis and P. varicornis), the other species of the group are all distributed in Anatolia. P. vodnensis is known only from Macedonia, whereas, P. varicornis has been recorded only from Syria and Lebanon. We assume that the group originated from an Anatolian ancestral stock and expanded its distribution to the Balkans through Taurus Way and Dardanelles. Other ancestral populations may have also spread in the north-south directions through the appropriate steppe corridors in the Anatolian Diagonal Mountains and in its vicinity.

AbstractThe lichen family Ophioparmaceae contains three genera: Boreoplaca, Hypocenomyce and Ophioparma. The genus Hypocenomyce is reported here for the first time for China, being represented by the species Hypocenomyce scalaris which is distributed in south-western China. For the genus Ophioparma, one new species is described in this paper, namely Ophioparma pruinosa Li S. Wang & Y. Y. Zhang sp. nov., which is characterized by a pruinose thallus and the presence of usnic acid. Ophioparma araucariae is also reported as new for the Chinese lichen biota. Previous reports of O. lapponica in China are recognized as misidentifications of O. ventosa. Descriptions, keys and phylograms are provided for these species.

New records of water mites from Serbia, North Macedonia and Greece revealed by DNA barcoding are presented. DNA barcodes were recovered from 63 water mite specimens morphologically assigned to 32 species. One species Lebertia algeriensis Lundblad, 1942, is reported for the first time for the Balkans; four species, i.e. Lebertia fimbriata Thor, 1899, L. rivulorum K. Viets, 1933, Atractides stankovici Pešić & Gerecke, 2010, and Wettina lacustris Pešić & Smit, 2018 are new for North Macedonia; Monatractides madritensis (K. Viets, 1930) and Mideopsis roztoczensis Biesiadka & Kowalik, 1979 are new for Serbia; and Hygrobates mediterraneus Pešić, 2020 is new for Greece. Comparing sequences of our study with the available COI sequences we recognized five possible cases of cryptic diversity involving species clusters with more than 5% divergence indicating that these species need further study.
