Socio-economic Aspects Influencing Rural Household Adoption of Improved Clean Cook Stoves Case Study: Rwanda

Objective – This study proposes an integrated Islamic microfinance model in alleviating poverty and improving the performance of microenterprises based on a case study of Indonesia, by focusing specifically on BRI Microbanking. Design/methodology – This study adopts the exploratory study to construct the integrated Islamic microfinance with the purpose to alleviate poverty and enhance the business performance of enterprises. Results – As Islamic microfinance is known widely due to the high demand from Muslim countries. Since, it plays a crucial role effectively in alleviating poverty and developing the business performance on enterprises, particularly on microenterprises. Presently, many scholars attempted to build a successful Islamic microfinance model by using Islamic financing instruments such as mudarabah, musyarakah, and murabahah. This study attempts to build an integrated Islamic microfinance model by using BRI Syariah Micro as a case study. It is expected that this integrated Islamic microfinance model can enrich existing models in terms of social and economic aspects. Originality/Value – This research concentrates on proposing an integrated Islamic microfinance model based on the case study of BRI Syariah Microbanking. There seems to be a gap in the literature on the actual implementation of integrated Islamic microfinance in the world. The study highlights major factors to be emphasized to ensure the effectiveness of proposing an integrated Islamic microfinance model for BRI Syariah micro banking to alleviate poverty and to improve the performance of microenterprises.

A computerized techno-economic model that can be used to predict the thermal, environmental and economic aspects of integrated gasification combined cycles (IGCC) using fluidized bed gasifiers was developed. A brief description of the model is presented and representative applications of the model are demonstrated with a case study. The results verify the favourable characteristics of IGCC systems (i.e. high thermal efficiency, low levelized unit electricity cost, and reduced pollution emissions) and illustrate the effect of various parameters on the performance of IGCC power plants. Models for IGCC with moving bed and entrained bed gasifiers are presented elsewhere.

The Impact

This paper describes a group activity concerning the topic of climate change, designed to introduce the concepts of sustainable development into a Robotic Engineering degree. The purpose of this activity was to make students reflect about the impact of their work on the planet as future engineers by asking them to design an environmentally friendly robot that also integrated social and economic aspects, covering the three dimensions of sustainability in this way. Students were surveyed in order to study different aspects of their commitment, attitudes, practices, and motivation towards sustainability. In addition to the overall analysis of the survey, three specific studies were carried out with the aim of comparing the responses of different population groups: (i) Students who completed the proposed assignment and students who did not, (ii) female and male students, and (iii) roles played in the assignment. The results of the analysis revealed the high commitment of the students with respect to sustainability, but also a lack of active participation and awareness of their impact as future engineers. The activity was not only a way to introduce sustainability concepts, but in many cases, it also became a motivation for the participants, especially for the female students.
