The chapter examines and discusses the role and communicative potential of social media based platforms in citizen political participation and protests in Zimbabwe specifically focusing on the #thisflag movement on Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp. #thisflag is a social media-based platform that rose to challenge the Zimbabwean government over the political and economic decay as well as rampant corruption characterising the country contemporarily. While a new phenomenon to Zimbabwe and Zimbabwean politics, the impact and communicative potential of social media as an alternative public sphere was recently tested in nationwide protest stayaway organised through the Facebook and Twitter movement under the #thisflag handle/brand. This chapter discusses the manners in which such social media platforms impact national politics in Zimbabwe as well as globally, specifically looking at the #thisflag movement as a case study.

The study contributes to defining the impact of digital communication on civic and political participation, explaining how social media mediate public activism. Based on the concept of the ‘digital citizenship’ the paper reveals the political aspect of the public activism of Russian youth online. The empirical model is based on a combination of methods and procedures of applied research in order to reveal the details of civil and political participation, and protest activism of youth online. The research model includes analysis of social media and a large-scale online survey of the younger audience. Based on the analysis of social media information flows, the paper states the prevalence of the youth’s civic participation over political participation, as well as the fact that the dynamics of social activity depend on the events and the current agenda. The authors describe the level of civic and political activity of youth online based on sociological data. They also divide the audience of the protest theatre according to the following models: leaders, activists, followers, and spectators. In general, the study reveals the status and details of the younger generation’s communication activity online, where communities establish and implications of linking actions appear.

Eight years have passed since the original Arab Spring in Tunisia took place in January 2011. It has been almost six years since the impact of the Wisconsin Spring on Scott Walker's attempts at policy changes in the state occurred. At that time, the effect of social media on public awareness and public participation in political events was considered new and innovative. Since then, Walker won a recall election and a re-election. He made a run for the Presidency and lost. In November 2018, Scott Walker was unseated in the gubernatorial race by Tony Evers. This chapter updates what has transpired since then and the impact of social media on the events in Wisconsin, determining whether social media impacted public opinion, political participation, and electoral outcomes in the state.

The paper is devoted to the study of the features of political participation in the modern information society. In the context of the rapid digitalization of the political space, the analysis of existing and emerging forms of political participation is of particular relevance. The aim of the paper is to study the impact of an individual’s internal attitudes on his/her willingness to participate in socially significant events, both online and offline. The influence of internal attitudes of individuals is considered in the paper through the prism of two factors: the perception of social media as the main channel for the expression of civic interests (perception factor) and people’s attitude to the idea of the possibility of a single political leader appearing in social media space (leadership factor).Poll among students was chosen as the main applied research method, since students are an active users of modern social media. The poll results show that almost half of active users of social media are ready to participate in social processes both online and offline. In addition, the vast majority of respondents perceive the Internet platforms of modern social media as the main channel and mechanism for expressing civic activity. The poll results also showed that half of active users deny the possibility of a single political leader appearing in the social media space (although there is a large proportion of those who, on the contrary, agree with this idea — more than a third of all respondents). Cross-analysis of the poll data confirmed the assumption indicated in the work, according to which the individuals perception of social media as a communicative channel effective for the purpose of civic participation, contributes to their readiness to participate in socially significant events online. At the same time, the study of the impact of the leadership factor on individuals’ readiness for various forms of political participation did not form an unambiguous opinion on the nature of this impact and requires further study. This study demonstrates that activity in social media does not contribute to the socio-political passivity of their users.

The emergence of new media as a result of the development of the Internet has made the media a democratic agent of information. In conjunction with the transition of current political culture, society is now more comfortable using social media as a source of political information acquisition. This study was conducted to identify the impact of social media use on politics in Malaysia as well as to analyze the level of social media use in determining the people's pattern of support for political parties and political candidates in Malaysia. This study was conducted using a quantitative approach which is survey. Questionnaire was used as the research instrument. A total of 993 respondents consisting of male (46.2%) and female (53.8%) were randomly sampled from peninsular Malaysia to participate in the study. The findings reveal that nearly two-thirds of respondents used newspapers (65.5%), followed by social media (63.5%) and television (59.5%) to search and read current political information in Malaysia. The findings also show that respondents agreed that social media play a role and has the advantage of channeling political information (min = 3.57) compared to conventional media. The respondents somehow agreed with political participation through social media. Respondents also agreed that social media have helped to enhance the image of candidates and political parties (min = 3.17) by displaying activities of candidates serving the people (min = 3.25). This suggests that today's society is very much concerned with what is shown on social media involving current political situation. Therefore, monitoring of political information shared on social media should be done to ensure that information is free from seditious elements that can diverge unity. Keywords: Use of Social Media; Political support; Political party; Political participation; MalaysiaCite as: Salman, A., Yusoff, M.A., Mohamad Salleh, M.A., & Hj Abdullah, M.Y.

Consensus on the impact of information-oriented use of social media on political participation is lacking. Some argue a positive relationship, in that social media promotes participation through awakening the user’s agency, while others focus on the selection and disenabling effects of low-quality content. Nevertheless, both arguments focus almost exclusively on the objective conditions for participation and largely ignore users’ motivations to participate. Consequently, this article proposes online political efficacy as a mechanism linking the use of social media to political participation. Specifically, we argue that (1) the effect of the information-oriented use of social media on political participation is positively mediated through the user’s online political efficacy and (2) this mediation effect is only significant in the case of online political participation. We test these arguments within the framework of causal mediation analysis proposed by Imai et al. using data collected from the 2015 Taiwan Communication Survey.
