Academic Achievement Effects of an in-Class Service Model on Students with and without Disabilities

This article presents the results of a study designed to evaluate the impact of an in-class service model on the achievement of students at risk of school failure. The model, which included collaborative consultation, cooperative teaching, parent involvement, and strategic and adapted instruction was implemented for 1 school year in 13 different schools. Significant effects were found on writing scores for students at risk and on reading and mathematics scores for general education students. No significant treatment effects were detected for students with learning disabilities. The findings confirm the benefits of the in-class service model for some students and the need to pursue further research in order to achieve better results for the lowest achievers in the classroom.

Teacher-child interactions with exceptional, at-risk, and typical learners were observed in three inclusive classrooms. The purpose of this study was to examine both the frequency and type of teacher and student initiations and responses. Observations were conducted at the beginning, middle, and end of one entire school year and based on naturally occurring teacher-child interaction. Behaviors included teacher initiations, student initiations, and teacher responses to student initiations. Although the number of interactions between teachers and children did not change over the year, the type of interactions did change during the year in relation to child group membership. Teachers initiated more task-related interactions with exceptional children and gave them more negative feedback compared to at-risk and typical learners, but only at the beginning of the year. In the middle of the year, teachers gave significantly more negative responses to the task-related and off-task initiations of students at risk than to children with disabilities or typical learners. By the end of the year, there were no significant differences in the number or type of initiations to any of the children. Implications are discussed for the practice of including children with special needs in the general education classroom.

This study compared the stress, social support, and adjustment of 40 students with learning problems due to learning disabilities or mild mental retardation, and 396 general education students without learning problems, in middle school Examined were: stressors related to academics, peers, and problems with teacher/rules and overall felt stress; social support from family, other adults, and peers; and adjustment, including feelings about self and liking school. The relation between stress, social support, and adjustment also was explored. Results showed that students with learning problems experienced more stress, less peer support, greater adult support, and poorer adjustment, than those without learning problems. Adjustment was related to students' stress in middle school. Interventions for this group of students at risk were discussed.

First-year students who enter college pursuing a STEM degree still face challenges persisting through the STEM pipeline (Chen, 2013; Leu, 2017). In this case study, researchers examine the impact of a utilitarian scientific literacy based academic intervention on retention of first-year students in STEM using a mixed methods approach. A sample (n = 116) of first-year students identified as at-risk of not persisting in STEM were enrolled in a for credit utilitarian scientific literacy course. Participants of the semester long course were then compared with a control group of first-year students identified as at-risk of persisting in STEM. A two-proportion z test was performed to assess the mean differences between students and participants of the course were given a survey to gauge student experiences. Quantitative results (φ 0.34, p < 0.05) indicate that the utilitarian scientific literacy course had a statistically significant impact on retention among first-year students at-risk of persisting in STEM. Moreover, qualitative data obtained from participant responses describe internal and external growth as positive outcomes associated with the intervention.

This research assessed the impact of combining small-group cognitive reading intervention with a motivational program targeting students’ goals, emotions, and self-efficacy beliefs on the reading performance and motivation of third-grade students at-risk for reading difficulties ( n = 25, Mage = 8.99, SD = 0.38). Using a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test efficacy trial design, effects of the intervention on phonological awareness, listening comprehension, accuracy, fluency, reading comprehension, and motivation were assessed. Results indicate that compared with students who received Cognitive-Only reading intervention, students who received the combined Cognitive plus Motivational reading intervention showed greater gains in reading comprehension and phonological awareness. Findings provide preliminary evidence that supplementing cognitive reading intervention with the proposed motivational program can improve the reading performance of students at-risk for reading difficulties.

To date, reports of reading interventions for students at risk for emotional/behavioral disorders (E/BD) that have been published in refereed journals have involved sustained support by university or school-site personnel. This study examined the efficacy and feasibility of a reading intervention that 2 general education teachers implemented in inclusive settings to support 7 first-grade students at risk for E/BD and reading difficulties. Results of a multiple baseline design revealed lasting improvements in reading fluency for all students, accompanied by decreases in variability of academic engagement for 4 students. Although intervention goals, procedures, and outcomes exceeded teacher expectations, social validity ratings for some students declined between the onset and the conclusion of the intervention. This article presents limitations, future directions, and educational implications.

Abstract The undergraduate curriculum structure in Hong Kong was changed from 3 years to 4 years starting from the 2012–2013 school year, with the extra year of study primarily devoted to general education study. At The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the General University Requirements (GUR) has been designed in response to this change. In this study, the question of whether the development of students in the 4-year program was better than that of the 3-year program was examined via a static group comparison design. The treatment group was Year 3 students of the 4-year undergraduate degree program (n=566) whereas the control group comprised Year 3 students of the 3-year degree program (n=290). Measures on empathy, positive youth development, and student engagement were used as indicators of student holistic development. While the mean age of students in the 3-year program was higher than that of the 4-year program, students in the 4-year program performed better than the students of the 3-year program on several indicators of desired graduate attributes. Bearing in mind the limitations of the static comparison group design, the present study provides support for the positive impact of GUR at PolyU on students of the 4-year undergraduate curriculum.

Objective: Researchers have speculated that the COVID-19 pandemic may expand the academic performance gap experienced by at-risk students. We examined learning experiences during the 2020 to 2021 school year and the impact the pandemic has had on high school student grade point average (GPA), including predictors of change in GPA from 2019–2020 to 2020–2021. Method: Participants were 238 adolescents (55.5% male), 49.6% with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in the United States. Adolescents reported on their GPAs via online surveys. Results: GPA significantly decreased on average from 2019–2020 to 2020–2021 school year. ADHD status and biological sex significantly moderated change—students with ADHD and male students reported decreased GPA, whereas students without ADHD and female students’ GPA did not change. Low income and Black/Latinx students had lower GPAs in both school years. Conclusion: It is imperative that additional supports be provided for at-risk students to help them catch up on missed learning during the pandemic.

Abstract This study took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and examined the impact of explicit instruction and fluency practice of letter/sound combinations on reading Amharic letters and words. First grade students at risk for reading difficulties were assigned via stratified random assignment to treatment or control condition. Students in the treatment group received explicit instruction and fluency practice on grade one Amharic letters, two times a week for 18 weeks for 36 sessions. Students in the control condition received typical Amharic reading instruction. Results indicate that students in the treatment condition significantly outperformed students in control on letter sound identification and word reading fluency.
