ABSTRACTObjective: to analyze the importance of the posture adopted in professional relationships between managers and workers of the health care field. Methodology: this is a qualitative study, an integrative literature review, whose search strategy was based on divulging, representation, and diversity of content expressed in databases of Bireme (SciELO). The following descriptors and their combinations in Portuguese were used to search for references: management; motivation; interpersonal relationship; humanization. The research period was from March to December 2010, and the inclusion criteria defined for the selection of papers were: papers published in Portuguese; full papers portraying the theme concerned, the field of health care management, and the worker as individual, taking part in the Brazilian hospital context. An answer to the following question was sought: Why some managers do not concern themselves about knowing how to take care in a humanized way of the workers of health care facilities? Results: from the research, one can understand that the hierarchical distinction implies the existence of a separation between the individuals; however, hierarchy exists and needs to be worked out by all people involved in a satisfactory way, in order to provide personal and professional improvement. Conclusion: the interpersonal relationship in these work places is a matter of development, training, and recognition of the subject who works and the subject who uses the services provided. In the health care field, along with hierarchy, other aspects are highlighted, such as shifts, institutional actions, and interpersonal relationships related to the concept, prejudice about getting sick and the disease. Descriptors: management; motivation; humanized service; interpersonal relationship. In most Nigerian hospitals, there is no evidence of formally employed health care chaplains. Personal experiences of a health care chaplain serving at a faith-based hospital in Nigeria show that the Nigerian cultural context, as it relates to individuals’ personal spirituality, as well as the abundant research on the associations between spirituality/religiosity and health, precipitate the need for services of health care chaplains in Nigerian hospitals, whether faith-based, non-faith-based, or government hospitals.

Similarities and distinctions are drawn between the various terms describing types of collaboration and discussed with respect to the added value that each relationship can have for the individual and for the health care team. A conceptual depiction of the essential components of effective teamwork or collaboration is presented. Emphasis is placed on the dynamic nature of the process of developing and sustaining these relationships across the midwife’s professional lifetime.
