Reliability assessment of multi-component systems under competing degradation and random shocks has been intensively investigated in recent years. In most cases, the parameters associated with competing degradation and random shocks are represented by crisp values. However, due to insufficient data and vague judgments from experts, it may produce epistemic uncertainty with those parameters and they are befitting to be described as fuzzy numbers. In this article, the internal degradation is treated as a continuous monotonically increasing random process with respect to operating time, whereas the amount of cumulative damage produced by each external random shock is modeled by a geometric process. As components in a system suffer the same environmental condition, an external random shock will produce different amounts of cumulative damage to each component simultaneously. Each component fails when either the internal degradation or cumulative damage from the random shocks, whichever comes first, exceeds its corresponding random thresholds. Moreover, the parameters associated with the internal degradation and the random shocks are represented by triangular fuzzy numbers. The fuzzy reliability functions of components and the entire system are evaluated by a set of optimization models. A multi-component system, together with some comparative results, is presented to illustrate the implementation of the proposed method.

This research investigates the problem of cumulative degradation and random shocks a system like a centrifugal pump may experience during normal and adverse operating conditions. An accelerated life testing method was employed to determine the degradation of the pump under cumulative damage degradation and random shocks conditions. An age- Based policy was used to determine the optimum time interval that will minimize the total expected cost of the system. The random shock increases the number of failures and hence reduces the reliability of the system. The total expected preventive maintenance cost obtained varies from N1700.00 (One thousand seven hundred naira) to N16,000.00 (sixteen thousand naira), depending on the shock and shock duration. The methodology presented is useful and thus recommended for use to study cumulative damage degradation and random shocks for similar systems.

Wind power has been widely used in the past decade because of its safety and cleanness. Double fed induction generator (DFIG), as one of the most popular wind turbine generators, suffers from degradation. Therefore, reliability assessment for this type of generator is of great significance. The DFIG can be characterized as a multi-state system (MSS) whose components have more than two states. However, due to the limited data and/or vague judgments from experts, it is difficult to obtain the accurate values of the states and thus it inevitably contains epistemic uncertainty. In this paper, the fuzzy universal generating function (FUGF) method is utilized to conduct the reliability assessment of the DFIG by describing the states using fuzzy numbers. First, the fuzzy states of the DFIG system’s components are defined and the entire system state is calculated based the system structure function. Second, all components’ states are determined as triangular fuzzy numbers (TFN) according to experts’ experiences. Finally, the reliability assessment of the DFIG based on the FUGF is conducted.

In this paper, an integrated inventory model is developed from the perspective of a single vendor and multi-buyers for deteriorating items under fuzzy environment and inflation. In the development of the model, it is assumed that all costs parameters, demand and the production rates are imprecise in nature; they are represented by the trapezoidal fuzzy numbers, as these parameters are not constant and can be disturbed due to daily market changes. We use function principle as arithmetic operations to find the total inventory cost in fuzzy sense and Graded Mean - Integration Representation Method to defuzzify the fuzzy total inventory cost. Inflation is used to find the present worth of total cost. Since the optimal policy of buyers may not be the most economical for a vendor, thus to deal with this situation, integrated cost policy is used to reach the optimal policy. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the model.

This paper considers an inventory model in which the shortages are backlogged and the demand is dependent on unit cost. An optimum value for average total cost is calculated by considering various input costs, lot size and maximum inventory under fuzzy environment. The process of defuzzification is done by using the signed distance method. Numerical example and sensitivity analysis is given for calculating both crisp and fuzzy values of the total cost.

Execution of any project with optimum duration, cost, quality and risk is very significant for project administrators in recent very competitive commercial situation. Sometimes it is not possible to have detailed earlier statistics about project criteria. In such situations, estimation of different Decision makers are considered in linguistic variables and altered into triangular fuzzy numbers as fuzzy numbers have ability to deal with vagueness. In this paper, we frame a new multi-mode multi objective critical path problem and suggest a possibilistic methodology to find critical path for a project where three decision makers’ views are considered as three modes of execution in terms of linguistic variables. We have formulated model of multiple mode in project network problem and find its solution with fuzzy programming approach with exponential membership and linear membership function. The proposed approach is useful to solve multi-mode project management problem which calculates optimal critical path according to four criteria- time, cost, risk and quality with three activities modes of execution in fuzzy environment.

In this study, a fuzzy cooperative continuous static game (PQFCCSG) with n players having fuzzy parameters in all of the cost functions and the right- hand-side of constraints is characterized. Their fuzzy parameters are represented by piecewise quadratic fuzzy numbers. The α-pareto optimal solution concept is specified. In addition, the stability sets of the first and second kind without differentiability are conceptualized and established. An illustrated numerical example is discussed for proper understanding and interpretation of the proposed concept.

This paper formulates an economic order quantity inventory model under the condition of permissible delay in payments in fuzzy environment. All the parameters of the model, excluding permissible delay period and cycle length, are taken to be trapezoidal Fuzzy numbers. The arithmetic operations are defined under the function principle. The cost function has been defuzzified using signed distance method and thereby solved to obtain the optimal replenishment period. The numerical example is presented to show the validity of the model followed by sensitivity analysis.

Reliability assessment of system suffering from random shocks is attracting a great deal of attention in recent years. Excluding internal factors such as aging and wear-out, external shocks which lead to sudden changes in the system operation environment are also important causes of system failure. Therefore, efficiently modeling the reliability of such system is an important applied problem. A variety of shock models are developed to model the inter-arrival time between shocks and magnitude of shocks. In a cumulative shock model, the system fails when the cumulative magnitude of damage caused by shocks exceed a threshold. Nevertheless, in the existing literatures, only the magnitude is taken into consideration, while the source of shocks is usually neglected. Using the same distribution to model the magnitude of shocks from different sources is too critical in real practice. To this end, considering a system subject to random shocks from various sources with different probabilities, we develop a generalized cumulative shock model in this article. We use phase-type distribution to model the variables, which is highly versatile to be used for modeling quantitative features of random phenomenon. We will discuss the reliability characteristics of such system in some detail and give some clear expressions under the one-dimensional case. Numerical example for illustration is also provided along with a summary.
