The results of a nationwide survey of members of the Society for Human Resource Management are discussed. HR managers shared their perceptions regarding involvement in HR activities, involvement in strategic planning, professional development, impressions, and future issues. The findings update results of 1985–87 surveys compiled by ASPA, TPFC, BNA, and others.

Human Resource Management discipline extracted its roots from organizational psychology discipline and proved to be an important practice for managing organizations. The role of this practice has emerged to be strategic with passage to time. Today the role of human resource management departments has become inevitable for 21st century modern businesses. This article focuses upon role of human resource management practice in 21st century. This theoretical paper is aiming the importance of human resource managers, HR practices and its influencing factors. In addition to that, this article also elaborates the upcoming challenges which are faced by 21st century HR managers. Author has conducted HR literature analysis in order to present emerging issues, challenges and practices of human resource management discipline in context of 21st century.

The aim of this article is to contribute to understanding the importance of considering the effect of employees’ perceptions of Socially Responsible Human Resource Management (SR-HRM) on employee commitment. Results, applied to different levels of the organization (HR managers, line managers and employees) show, on one hand, that there is a relationship between a SR-HRM and employee commitment, and on the other hand, that employees’ perceptions have an influence on the extent to which these relationships are developed. HR managers and line managers perceived SR-HRM in a similar way and line managers and non-managerial employees generally did too. The frequency with which line managers disagree with employees’ perceptions about socially responsible practices was low. Suggestions for HRM practice and future research are provided.

The case is more diagnostic in nature and should be discussed in the same spirit. The case is suitable for developing conceptual thinking and community orientation of professionals aspiring or pursuing a career in the area of human resource management. Case overview The case examines the imperatives behind Sterling Tools Limited (STL), a leading fasteners manufacturing Indian company's decision and strategy adopted to inculcate team spirit through outdoor experiential training (OET). The case explores in detail the process undertaken to execute the OET at STL. The case also briefly mentions the tangible benefits of OEL. The case is structured to enable readers to: understand the basic objectives of OET; understand the innovative approach adopted by STL; and understand how an organization responds to changes and challenges in the external environment. Expected learning outcomes This case is structured to enable students to: understand the meaning and significance of outdoor experiential training (OET); analyze the challenges faced by HR managers in modern day organizations; learn the conceptual framework and understand the principles of OET; examine the measures that can be taken by management to ensure a smooth induction and socialization process of employees; and understand the need of inculcating team spirit among employees. Purpose The purpose of the paper is to trace the historical perspectives in the development and evolution of human resource management as a field of study and profession. Design/methodology/approach The paper adopts a desk research to conduct a general review of literatures that are fundamental in tracing the historical routes, evolution, and professional development in the field of human resource management. Findings The literature reviewed reveals that human resource management is a product of the human relations movement of the early twentieth century, when researchers began documenting ways of creating business value through the strategic management of the workforce. The function was initially dominated by transactional work such as payroll and benefits administration, but due to globalization, company consolidation, technological advancement, and further research, human resource now focuses on strategic initiatives like mergers and acquisitions, talent management, succession planning, industrial and labor relations, and diversity and inclusion. In start-up companies, human resource’s duties are performed either by a handful of trained professionals or even by non-human resource personnel. In larger companies, an entire functional group is typically dedicated to the discipline, with staff specializing in various human resource tasks and functional leadership engaging in strategic decision making across the business. To train practitioners for the profession, institutions of higher education, professional associations, and companies themselves have created programs of study dedicated explicitly to the duties of the function. Academic and practitioner organizations likewise seek to engage and further the field of human resource, as evidenced by several field-specific publications. Originality/value The study contributes to the body of knowledge in human resource management and practices, professional development, history of human resource management and the future of human resource functions. Further attempt is made in the study to present historical perspective of the evolution of the field to prepare professional managers in managing the human resource function and disseminate the human resource development philosophy and values to improve human resource practice and recognition within the management agenda.

Human Resource Management within healthcare institutions is an important part of their organization and as such, it is quite complicated, complex and dynamic. The interest in managing with human resources is crucial all around the world, since the success of daily activities as well as the welfare of the functioning of healthcare centers largely depend on the mode of human resource management within those institutions. The aim of this paper is to analyze the factors that influence in successfulness and efficiency of human resource management at the Clinical Hospital in Tetovo which in turn directly influences the improvement of the quality of medical services provided by the medical staff and to analyze the organizational structure at this public healthcare institution. During the first quarter of 2018 interviews with employees in some of the wards of this hospital were done related to their daily activities, services they provide, problems and challenges they face. Also, the level of satisfaction from the assessment of their work by the institution has been measured. Some of the major problems that were emphasized in all of the groups of interviewees had to deal with low salaries and the lack of additional compensations that can significantly motivate them in the more successful realization of their daily duties and activities. The stimulation and motivation of the medical staff for professional development and continuous education through various different professional development workshops, seminars, conferences, symposiums, etc. has a great impact on the overall performance of the employees. The adequate equipment of wards with the most modern items and devices is more than crucial for a smooth realization of daily activities and it also has a direct impact on the achieved results. Successes and achievements in the field of medicine are closely related to the scientific advancements in general. Healthcare institutions at all levels should treat their personnel better by providing them more reasonable salaries and rewards for their good performance as well as additional financial support for their further professional development. Competent bodies within the Ministry of Healthcare should actively monitor the quality of provided healthcare services by the medical personnel, encourage, and invest in their efficient distribution and dissemination.
