The support of prominent theologians for the First World War made Barth understand that their premises were false. How instead could a pastor rightly speak of God? Barth returned anew to the biblical text, becoming convinced that it can still speak to people today. The result was Barth’s first Epistle to the Romans (1919), a commentary to Paul’s letter. Barth stresses that the kingdom of God comes about solely through God, while all human activities, including religion, belong to the world. Barth’s cultural critique reflects the spiritual situation of the wartime and postwar period, yet without any hope on cultural renewal. In his 1919 Tambach lecture, Barth further developed his insights of the difference between God and religion. For God one can only wait. Jesus Christ’s resurrection is the wholly other. Therefore theology needs to think dialectically. Barth’s new ideas found great resonance, but he was also accused of arbitrary exegesis.

AbstractLatin America had the highest tariffs in the world before 1914; Asia had the lowest. Heavily protected Latin America also boasted some of the most explosivebelle époquegrowth, while open Asia registered some of the least. What brought the two regions to the opposite ends of the tariff policy spectrum? We find that limits to Asian tariff policy autonomy may have lowered tariffs substantially there, but by themselves they cannot explain why Asian tariffs were so much lower than the Latin American tariffs before 1914; that natural barriers, domestic political economy and strategic tariff policy seems to have contributed much to the difference and that the origins of Asian post-World War 2 import-substitution policies seem to lie in the interwar years when Asian tariff levels caught up with those of Latin America.

The aim of the research, based on content analysis, is to identify the model of naming articles on war crimes in the former Yugoslavia on the Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian versions of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, which we observe in this context, following C. Pentzold, as ". global memory place". The sample covers topics that (a) appear on two or three versions of Wikipedia and that (b) are dedicated to war crimes committed during the World War II and the breakup of Yugoslavia. A comparative analysis of the titles of these articles was conducted with the intention of determining the degree of similarity, as well as to consider the potential causes of the difference. The degree of similarity of the titles on war crimes is bigger in the articles concerning the joint struggle of the three nations in the World War II. In contrast, articles dealing with intergroup conflicts during the breakup of former Yugoslavia are characterized by far lower similarity of titles, which are sometimes completely contradictory. The titles of articles on these three versions of Wikipedia do not only serve to indicate a certain term or event, although it is their basic and most common function, but also to emphasize the interpretation of a sensitive topic.

Summary This article presents a postcolonial interpretation of Olwid’s (Witold Hulewicz’s) book of poems Flame in Hand (Płomień w garści, 1921). His poetic ‘fragments’ describing the experience of the World War are remarkably similar to the poetry of German expressionism. Whereas previous critics treated this similarity as a proof of the derivative, unoriginal nature of the Poznań expressionism, this article claims that Olwid’s was a deliberate attempt to start a rapprochement between the Polish and the German culture. After decades of colonial dependence the breakthrough of 1918 the two cultures had a chance to resume a dialogue of equals with the expressionist poetics as a new footing. Hulewicz tones down the difference between the hegemon and the victim in the spirit of the expressionistic search for common humanity. To that end he also develops a new interpretation of the Polish Romantic tradition. His endeavours mark him out as a precursor of postcolonial criticism, and more specifically that type of postcolonialism which uses the emancipatory strategy as a means to the creation of a ‘truly free man’. That high goal is pursued not because of a commitment to cosmopolitanism but in the name of absolute human values.

The phenomenon of economic growth is studied by economists and statisticians in various aspects for a long time. Economic theory is devoted to assessing factors of growth in the tradition of R. Solow, R. Barrow, W. Easterly and others. During the last quarter of the century, however, the institutionalists, namely D. North, D. Wallis, B. Weingast as well as D. Acemoglu and J. Robinson, have shown the complexity of the problem of development on the part of socioeconomic and political institutions. As a result, solving the problem of how economic growth affects inequality between countries has proved extremely difficult. The modern world is very diverse in terms of development level, and the article offers a new approach to the formation of the idea of stylized facts using cluster analysis. The existing statistics allows to estimate on a unified basis the level of GDP production by 174 countries of the world for 1992—2016. The article presents a structured picture of the world: the distribution of countries in seven clusters, different in levels of development. During the period under review, there was a strong per capita GDP growth in PPP in the middle of the distribution, poverty in various countries declined markedly. At the same time, in 1992—2016, the difference increased not only between rich and poor groups of countries, but also between clusters.

During the twenty years after the Second World War, housing began to be seen as a basic right among many in the west, and the British welfare state included many policies and provisions to provide decent shelter for its citizens. This article focuses on the period circa 1968–85, because this was a time in England when the lack of affordable, secure-tenured housing reached a crisis level at the same time that central and local governmental housing policies received wider scrutiny for their ineffectiveness. My argument is that despite post-war laws and rhetoric, many Britons lived through a housing disaster and for many the most rational way they could solve their housing needs was to exploit loopholes in the law (as well as to break them out right). While the main focus of the article is on young British squatters, there is scope for transnational comparison. Squatters in other parts of the world looked to their example to address the housing needs in their own countries, especially as privatization of public services spread globally in the 1980s and 1990s. Dutch, Spanish, German and American squatters were involved in a symbiotic exchange of ideas and sometimes people with the British squatters and each other, and practices and rhetoric from one place were quickly adopted or rejected based on the success or failure in each place.

A human-centred approach to the environment is leading to ecological collapse. One of the ways that speculative realism challenges anthropomorphism is by taking non-human things to be as valid objects of investivation as humans, allowing a more responsible and truthful view of the world to take place. Brian Willems uses a range of science fiction literature that questions anthropomorphism both to develop and challenge this philosophical position. He looks at how nonsense and sense exist together in science fiction, the way in which language is not a guarantee of personhood, the role of vision in relation to identity formation, the difference between metamorphosis and modulation, representations of non-human deaths and the function of plasticity within the Anthropocene. Willems considers the works of Cormac McCarthy, Paolo Bacigalupi, Neil Gaiman, China Miéville, Doris Lessing and Kim Stanley Robinson are considered alongside some of the main figures of speculative materialism including Graham Harman, Quentin Meillassoux and Jane Bennett.
