Objective Citation analysis represents one of the best available methods to identify the most influential articles. This study aimed to identify and characterize the top 100 highly cited articles (T100) that focus on hepatocellular carcinoma and to reveal the trends in accomplishments within this field. Methods A search of the Thomson Reuters Web of Science citation indexing database was conducted using terms related to hepatocellular carcinoma. The T100 were selected and analyzed further based on the number of citations, authorship, year of publication, journal, country of origin, institution, and article type. Results Hepatology published the highest number of papers (n = 15), and the United States produced the highest number of contributions (n = 31). Barcelona University was the institution with the highest number of articles in the T100 (n = 9). The T100 articles included 35 observational studies, 13 randomized control studies, 25 basic research articles, 18 reviews, seven clinical guidelines, and two meta-analyses. Conclusions This is the first bibliometric study to identify the most influential papers in hepatocellular carcinoma research. This report presents major advances and changes in research regarding hepatocellular carcinoma and can serve as a guide for writing a citable article.

The United States had the most published papers; clinical trials were the most common article type. The specialty journals of Anesthesiology and Anesthesia & Analgesia were the two most cited journals. Newer papers had a comparable number of citations to older articles, but the former had higher citation rates, greater funding disclosures, more focus on basic research, and more open access publications. Conclusions: This study provides a comprehensive overview of the most cited articles and highlights the increasing attention on PND. High-quality clinical trials with a greater journal impact factor received more citations. However, there has been growth in the number of basic science studies as an area of research with respect to the pathogenesis of PND.

Introduction: The fund of knowledge on benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) has been growing since the 1970s. Citation analysis is a tool by which we can quantify influence of specific articles and assess the growth of a certain topic. This paper seeks to identify trends, as well as draw attention to the most influential papers, authors, and journals. Many analogous studies have been done, but none have been done in the field of BPH. Methods: We used Thomson Reuters Web of Science to collect articles pertaining to BPH in a two-step fashion. We identified 117 keywords relevant to BPH and using these 117 words, we were able to identify 7302 total articles. These articles were organized by number of citations. Of the top 200 articles, 100 articles were excluded based on title and abstract analysis. One hundred articles were included for final analysis, as this is the standard of citation analysis. Results: Overall, total citations were slightly correlated with journal impact factor. Author analysis revealed no significant difference between authorship and average citations. Topic analysis showed the most cited topic was surgical management with 657.35 citations per year. Study design analysis showed the predominant study design was the randomized control trial. Conclusions: By using the two-step methodology, we were able to create a list of the top 100 most influential articles in the field of BPH. In doing so, we illustrated the growth of the field over time and paid tribute to the myriad of papers, authors, and journals that have shaped the field to this day.

Objectives: The number of citations an article receives is an important indication of its impact. The main objectives of this investigation provide readers with a practical guide in evaluating head and neck oncology literature and determine the characteristics of trends in ORL. Methods: This was a retrospective bibliometric analysis that did not involve human participant. The Thomson Reuters Web of Science was searched to determine the citations of all published HNO articles. Most cited 300 article analyzed and a total of 100 articles were included in our investigation under the topic search “Head AND NECK AND (cancer OR carcinoma OR oncology).” Articles include malignancies other than head and neck are excluded. The top 100 cited articles were selected and analyzed by 2 independent investigators. Country, Institution, First Author, Journal name, study design, cites per year information gathered and analyzed. Results: The journal with the highest number of top 100 cited articles was New England Journal Of Medicine with 19 paper, followed by The Journal of Clinical Oncology(17) and Cancer Research (12). The top article on the list (Radiotherapy plus cetuximab for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck-NEJM) has 2243 citations. A statistically significant association was found between the journal impact factor and the number of top 100 cited articles ( P < .05). The United States had the highest number of articles (63). John Hopkins is differed from other institutions with 15 contributing articles. Conclusion: Our analysis provides an insight into the citation frequency of top cited articles published in HNO to help recognize the quality of the works, discoveries and the trends steering the study of HNO. This is also a modern reading list for young HNO scientist.

AbstractThe number of times an article has been cited is thought to correspond with its level of academic influence. Within the orthopaedic literature, several citation analyses have been performed, including a recent investigation on the most commonly cited articles on femoroacetabular impingement (FAI); however, no study has determined the most cited investigations on extracapsular hip pathologies, including osteitis pubis, athletic pubalgia, and muscle strains. Such pathologies constitute a significant proportion of lower extremity injuries among athletes. The purpose of this study was to determine the 50 most cited investigations on extra-articular hip injuries by performing a systematic query of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science (Thomson Reuters, Philadelphia, PA). The following characteristics were determined for each article: number of citations, citation density, journal and publication year, country of origin, language, article type, article subtype, and level of evidence. The number of citations ranged from 46 to 202 (mean 84.4), and the citation densities ranged from 1.7 to 28.4 citations per year (mean: 7.9). Sixty-eight percent of the selected articles involved hamstring strains. The majority of articles were published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine (58%), followed by the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (12%). Most articles were published during the 2000s, originated from the United States, and 100% were written in English. Eighty percent were clinical studies; the majority of which had Level IV evidence. This collection of academic investigations on athletic extra-articular hip injuries can aid in the establishment of a reading curriculum for trainees participating in orthopaedic training programs.

The activity analysis of a scientific journal is relevant to know the evolution of its characteristics over time. In this paper, results of a bibliometric study of the Revista de Biología Tropical/International Journal of Tropical Biology and Conservation (Costa Rica) are presented. The goal of this study was to describe the main characteristics of its scientific production, and analyze its level of collaboration and its impact between the years 2003-2012. Data was derived from the Web of Science (Thomson-Reuters), and the relationship among authors and coauthors, institutions and countries, and their links with the citations received were analyzed for that period. Descriptive statistics about production (number of documents per year, institution and country), collaboration (authorship index, collaboration among institutions and countries) and impact (IF, position in JCR and number of citations received) were collected. Results showed that the journal has published 1 473 papers in this period, in similar proportions English and Spanish. Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela and Colombia are the most common countries of origin, with the Universidad of Costa Rica, Universidad Autónoma de Mexico and the University of Puerto Rico as the most common leader institutions. Collaboration between authors, institutions and countries has shown an increasing trend over the last decade. The co-author index was 3.07 per document, 63 % of publications included 2 or more institutions, and 22 % of the papers were product of international collaboration. The most common collaboration link was between Costa Rica and the United States of America. The impact factor has been oscillating during this last decade, reaching a maximum in 2012 (IF JCR = 0.553). Besides, 10 % of the most cited papers concentrated half of the citations received by the journal, and have a very high number of citations, compared with the journal mean. The main countries that cite the journal were USA, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Costa Rica. Data showed an increasing collaboration between authors, institutions and countries, and a direct relationship between the increase of this collaboration and the received impact.

BACKGROUND Citation counts of articles have been used by universities and funding bodies to measure scientific outcomes and assess suitability for grant applications. However, citation counts are not without limitations. With the rise of social media, altmetric scores may provide an alternative assessment tool. OBJECTIVE The aims of this study are to assess the characteristics of highly cited articles in medical professionalism and their altmetric scores. METHODS The Web of Science was searched for top-cited articles in medical professionalism, and the characteristics of each article were identified. The altmetric database was searched to identify report for each identified article. A model to assess the relationship between the number of citations and each of key characteristics as well as altmetric scores was developed. RESULTS No correlations were found between the number of citations and number of years since publication (p=0.192), number of institutes (p=0.081), number of authors (p=0.270), females in authorship (p=0.15), or number of grants (p=0.384). The altmetric scores varied from zero to 155, total= 806, median=5.0, (IQR=20). Twitter (54%) and Mendeley (62%) were the most popular altmetric resources. No correlation was found between the number of citations and the altmetric scores (p=0.661). To further assess these variables a model was developed using multivariate analysis; did not show significant differences across subgroups. The topics covered were learning and teaching professionalism, curriculum issues, professional and unprofessional behavior, defining and measuring professionalism. The articles were mainly published in Academic Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of General Internal Medicine, and Annals of Internal Medicine. CONCLUSIONS No correlation was found between citations and any of the article parameters. Altmetric scores of articles were not significantly correlated with citations. Highly cited articles were produced mainly by the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The study reflects the emerging role of altmetric and social media in the dissemination of research. Future studies should investigate the specific features of highly cited articles and factors that reinforce distribution of research data among scholars and non-scholars. Spinal deformity is a condition that has been recognized for many millennia. There have been major advances in the treatment of spinal deformity in recent years and studies outlining new ideas can inspire others to further advance the speciality. The number of citations a paper receives may indicate the influence of that paper. It is therefore important that we evaluate and analyze the most cited works in our field. The aim of this study is to identify the 100 most cited papers relevant to spinal deformity surgery in the literature. A search through the Thomson Reuters Web of ScienceTM for citations related to spinal deformity surgery was performed. The number of citations, mean citation number (total number citations/years since publication), journal, authors, year of publication and country of origin of the top 100 papers was recorded. The top 100 papers were cited a combined 17,646 times, ranging from 453 to 112. The majority of papers originated from the United States (71) and were published in 20 different journals. The decade 1990-1999 was the most prolific, with 36 of the 100 papers published during this time. Papers pertaining to the management of scoliosis (49) were the most common. This study identifies the top 100 most cited papers in the field of spinal deformity surgery. While citation is not a specific marker of the scientific quality of a paper, it is a surrogate for the influence a paper has had on the orthopedic community. This list of papers provides an invaluable resource for both those in training and those actively practicing and involved in the further development of spinal deformity surgery.

This chapter creates the scientometric profile of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) for the period from 1973 to 2016. The scientific productivity of the scientists is analyzed using scientometric indicators based on the data retrieved from the Scopus database. The analysis revealed that linear growth is prevailing. It also shows that the scientists are actively involved in disseminating their research findings in scholarly journals and G.V. Rao secured first position among the top-ranking authors. The Indian Institute of Science is the leading collaborating institution with VSSC and the United States is topmost collaborating country. Most of the scholarly communications of VSSC are published in the ‘Journal of Sound & Vibration' and a majority of the records are of an article type. Most of the articles are published in the inter-disciplinary subject of Engineering. The study also found that the total number of citations received by the documents published from VSSC are 17395 and out of the 1783 documents published and 1385 documents received citations.

Purpose: Stroke is a global economic burden of health, which means that it is critical to evaluate changes of optimal diagnoses and treatments. The aim of the study reported herein was to identify the most-cited articles in the field of ischemic stroke and assess their characteristics. Methods: We searched all included articles that had been cited more than 100 times using the “Cited Reference Search” in February 2016 from Web of Science Core Collection. Among a total of 2,651 articles, we excluded articles on basic science and which involved only hemorrhagic strokes and identified the top-100 cited articles on ischemic stroke. Results: The number of citations for the articles analyzed in this study ranged from 5,182 to 580. Most of the articles were published in The Lancet (25%) and Stroke (23%), and originated from the United States of America (n=44). Most of them were original articles (65%) and dealt with stroke risk factors (32%) and stroke management (30%). A novel study of hyperacute treatment involving recombinant-tissue plasminogen activator was described in the top-ranked article. Conclusion: Reviews on highly cited articles can help physicians identify trends in the diagnosis and treatment of ischemic stroke in the past. This bibliometric analysis can provide a unique perspective on historical developments in this field.
