Stakeholders’ Ideas About Positive Aging for Latinos: A Conceptual Map

Few studies explore the differences between diverse stakeholders’ understandings of what constitutes “positive aging” for Latino older adults. To address this gap, we worked with a 20-member steering committee (SC) of community stakeholders to collect concept mapping data from 38 scholars and community workers. We generated 90 statements related to positive aging from the literature and produced concept maps based on four different stakeholder groups’ ratings of them. All stakeholders prioritized “Financial Security,” but scholars marked “Spirituality” as least important whereas community workers rated it second highest. The design of programs for Latino older adults should reflect such differences.

Abstract With the help of the Positive Aging of Latinos Study (PALS) steering committee (N = 20), we used concept-mapping methods to learn what Latino older adults (N = 101) consider important for aging well, positively, and successfully. We used data from nine focus groups (six Spanish, three English) to generate an unabridged list of 171 statements that described what positive and successful aging meant to participants. The PALS steering committee reviewed the statements, assisted with the translation and back translation of items in Spanish, eliminated vague and duplicate statements, and approved a final list of 85 statements. Next, Latino older adults thematically sorted (n = 35) and rated (n = 93) the 85 statements (using a 1-5 scale; higher values indicate greater importance). These data were used to produce a concept map for how participants conceptualized positive and successful aging. The final map consisted of 11 clusters nested within 4 overarching regions. Region 1 [Self-Sufficiency] contains clusters of items which address “Stability” and “Independence.” Region 2 [Healthy Behaviors] includes clusters with items related to “Staying Healthy” and “Avoiding Trouble.” Region 3 [Perspectives on Life] encompasses four clusters of items that address mindsets: “Tómalo Suave (Take it Easy),” “Outlook on Life/Self-Care,” “Emotional Well-being,” and “Maturing.” Region 4 [Convivir (To coexist)] features indictors of interrelatedness such as “Social & Community Engagement,” “Coping & Adjustment,” and “Family Relationships.” These findings provide insights into how Latino older adults conceive of positive aging, which could be useful when designing culturally sensitive programming for Latino seniors.

Abstract Culture, embedded in language and reflected in colloquial expressions, influences behaviors and cognitive constructs that affect health. To reach Latino older adults, health promotion efforts should include congruent cultural aspects—such as relevant metaphors, values, and proverbs—that will resonate with their cognitive constructs. However, this content should also be situated within a broader social context. For community-dwelling Latino older adults, this means considering their care systems and the multiple stakeholders within. In this paper presentation, we describe an innovative, interdisciplinary collaboration to culturally and linguistically adapt existing Illinois Extension curricula to meet the needs of Latino older adults and their families living in Cook County, which includes Chicago and its neighboring suburbs. We will demonstrate how concept-mapping (CM) studies can be used to structure the cultural adaptation of educational curriculum to a Latino audience. Specifically, we describe these CM studies, which asked how multiple stakeholders and Latino older adults living in the Chicagoland area defined positive aging provided empirically-grounded direction for our 11-member steering committee, composed of investigators, service leaders, and Latino older adults. We also will describe how the current project deepens relationships in the community that facilitate dissemination efforts to Latino older adults.

Abstract The variation in Latino older adults’ conceptualizations of positive aging across studies suggests greater attention should be paid to within-group factors. The purpose of the current study was to identify which factors are important to positive aging from the perspective of Latino older adults, and whether the importance of these factors varied based on participant characteristics. A second aim of this study was to examine whether there are differences in views of successful aging between Latino older adults and service providers who support aging Latinos. The current study was conducted as part of a broader research project investigating Latino older adults’ perceptions of positive aging. Latino older adults (n = 93) and aging services providers (n = 45) rated the importance of a series of statements related to positive aging. Mixed-methods analysis of the statements identified nine distinct dimensions (Positive Outlook, Spirituality/Religion, Healthy Behaviors, Independence, Self-Care, Support for Others, Social Support, Leisure Activities, and Adaptability). Latino older adults rated Positive Outlook and Spirituality highest on importance, and ratings differed based on gender and other individual difference characteristics. For example, men placed greater relative importance on Independence and Support for Others compared to women, and younger participants rated Independence higher on importance compared to older participants. In addition, Latino older adults (vs. providers) placed greater importance on all aspects of positive aging, with greatest mean differences related to providing Support for Others and Spirituality. These findings have implications for wellness programs for Latino older adults and training for service providers.

Abstract Background To prevent people from relapsing into unhealthy habits, insight into predictors of relapse in physical activity and dietary behavior is needed. Therefore, we aimed to explore predictors of relapse in physical activity and dietary behavior from the perspectives of health practitioners and the key population (i.e. adults who recently lost weight and experienced relapse). Methods We used concept mapping to collect data among five groups of health practitioners (N = 39) and three key population groups (N = 21). First participants’ ideas on potential predictors were collected. Subsequently, these ideas were individually sorted by relatedness and rated on importance. Concept maps were created for each group using principal component analysis and cluster analysis. Results In total 43 predictors were identified, of which the majority belonged to the individual domain compared to the environmental domain. Although the majority of perceived predictors were mentioned by both stakeholder groups, both groups had different opinions regarding the importance of predictors. Also, few predictors were mentioned by all practitioner groups, but not by the key population, and vice versa. Practitioners indicated change in daily structure, stress, lack of effective coping skills, habitual behavior, and lack of self-efficacy regarding losing weight as most important recurrent (i.e. mentioned in all practitioner groups) predictors. The key population indicated lifestyle imbalance or experiencing a life event, lack of perseverance, negative emotional state, abstinence violation effect, decrease in motivation and indulgence as most important recurrent predictors. Conclusions Both stakeholder groups predominantly rated individual factors as most important perceived predictors of relapse. The finding that both groups differed in opinion regarding importance of predictors or identified different predictors, may provide an opportunity to enhance lifestyle coaching by ensuring it is patient-centered and tailored.

Abstract A crucial step in problem solving is the retrieval of already learned schemata from long-term memory, a process which may be facilitated by categorization of the problem. The way knowledge is organized affects its availability, and, at the same time, it constitutes the important difference between experts and novices. The present study employed concept maps in a novel way, as a categorization tool for chemical equilibrium problems. The objective was to determine whether providing specific practice in problem categorization improves student achievement in problem solving and in conceptual understanding. Two groups of eleventh-grade students from two special private seminars in Corfu island, Greece, were used: the treatment group (N = 19) and the control group (N = 21). Results showed that the categorization helped students to improve their achievement, but the improvement was not always statistically significant. Students at lower (Piagetian) developmental level (in our sample, students at the transitional stage) had a larger improvement, which was statistically significant with a high effect size. Finally, Nakhleh’s categorization scheme, distinguishing algorithmic versus conceptual subproblems in the solution process, was studied. Dependency of problem solving on an organized knowledge base and the significance of concept mapping on student achievement were the conclusion.

We assessed knowledge, attitude, and provision of recommended fall prevention (FP) practices by employees of senior-serving organization and participation in FP practices by at-risk elders. The Washington State Department of Health administered structured telephone surveys to 50 employees and 101 elders in Washington State. Only 38% of employees felt “very knowledgeable” about FP, and a majority of their organizations did not regularly offer FP services. Almost half (48%) of seniors sustained a fall within the past 12 months; however, one-third perceived falling to be among their least important health concerns, and most had minimal working knowledge of proven FP practices. Seniors who perceived avoiding falls as important to their well-being were more likely to participate in practices about which they had the least knowledge (risk assessment, medication management). Increased awareness and availability of FP services might help engage older adults in FP practices and reduce the adverse effects of falls.

Auto-monitoring is the pivotal concept in understanding the operation of concept maps, which have been used to help learners make sense of their study and plan learning activities. Central to auto-monitoring is the idea of a 'learning arena' where individuals can manipulate concept representations and engage in the processes of checking, resolving and confirming understandings. The learner is assisted by familiar metaphors (for example, networks) and the possibility of thinking 'on action' while 'in action'. This paper discusses these concepts, and concludes by arguing that maps are part of the process of learning rather than a manifestation of learning itself. 'Repertory grid analysis' was used as a way of constructing representations of learners conceptions of living things; and finding a common structure or understanding; this was described in previous work. 'Concept mapping' has been stated as an appropriate assessment procedure in science curricula in a number of countries. Previous relevant published work describing the benefits of 'concept mapping' as a learning, teaching, and assessing tool is large. However, the existence of a large literature is not justification in itself, and in this work we provide a critique of the current literature. Problems with 'concept mapping' are simply ignored. However, it is thought that 'repertory grid analysis' does overcome some of the recognized problems of 'concept mapping' such as: i) comparison of concept maps between students or between students and educators: in repertory grid this becomes not only possible but a reliable method - this has proven to be one of the more problematic areas in traditional 'concept mapping'; ii) quantification of concept mapping - integer scoring of whole concept maps in 'repertory grid analysis' is eliminated since the arranged structure of the graph produced holds significance for the conceptual structure. More research needs to be done in repertory grid analysis and its implications and applications in curricular research have yet to be fully explored. Pathophysiology at NOVA Medical School adopted the concept mapping methodology to promote the visual display of pathophysiological reasoning and learning, based on clinical vignettes. The objective of this project is to identify and label the linking words, in order to study their role in the structure and organization of the concept maps constructed by the students. We used an adopted classification of linking words, categorized in 5 groups: dynamic, static, illustrative, definition and clinical case information. At the end of the semester the concept maps related to the respiratory (mid-semester) and endocrine systems (end of semester) were analyzed and compared. We found linking words not included in any of the five categories, thus a group named “other” has been created. Statistically significant differences were found in dynamic and “other” categories (p=0,049 and p= 0,011, respectively; Wilcoxon signed-rank test). The dynamic words were the most commonly used, probably reflecting students’ need to better describe pathophysiological mechanisms, and the difference found was probably due an improvement in the learning process and concept maps building technic. It would be interesting next year to conduct a more detailed analysis, increasing the sample and ensuring a more robust dataset.
