Bully Pulpit? Twitter Users’ Engagement With President Trump’s Tweets

With nearly all political candidates, officeholders, and organizations using the platform, Twitter has become an important venue for political communication and engagement. In particular, Twitter lowers the cost of entry for political activity, with the result that millions of people follow and interact with political elites online. However, most studies of the political uses of twitter focus on the substance and content of tweets themselves. In contrast, we ask what influences the rates at which users engage with the tweets posted by political elites. To do this, we obtained the number of likes and retweets for each of President Trump’s tweets over a 14-month time span. Using these data, we find first that engagement varies with Trump’s net approval in the broader electorate. Second, we find that engagement varies with the substantive content of the tweet: negatively toned tweets and tweets involving foreign policy receive higher levels of engagement than other tweets. Third, we find that high-salience events—for example, the recusal of Jeff Sessions—lead to more engagement. Fourth, we find some evidence that engagement levels vary with the timing of the electoral cycle. Overall, we argue that the factors influencing Twitter engagement are in some ways similar to the factors influencing political activity more broadly, though it is possible that the fact that Trump’s use of Twitter is unique among politicians drives some of our results.

This article indicated a model for a scientific description of styles of political leadership in Serbia from 1990 to the present, more precisely, pointed the basic elements of concept developed by the author in the study ?The style of political leaders in Serbia in the period 1990-2006? (2010). For the evaluation the author uses analytical tools that include the aforementioned concept, simultaneously indicating correlative theoretical approaches the aforementioned study did not examine, and may be of importance for the research of political elites in Serbia. This contributes the epistemological part of the method, which is registered in the definition of the style of political leadership as a term and the category apparatus that follows - understood from the aspect of the political style: the style in building political power, the style of political communication, the style of building one?s legitimacy, the ideological style, the styles of political language, symbolism and rituals, non-verbal communication and style in expressing patriotism. Starting from the fact that political styles are related to characteristics of political cultures and that it is necessary to make a concept of ideal typical models of styles focused on political subjects, this article marked the styles of political leadership typology related to the specific acting of political leaders in Serbia: authoritarian, republican, realistic, populist, conformist, revolutionary and style of a politician-rebel.

Social media has invaded elections in Mexico. However, the power of citizens through the use of this platform is still unknown. Many citizens criticize political candidates using Twitter, others build networks and some others try to collaborate with candidates. This research is focused in understanding this kind of behavior, analyzing the case of the presidential candidate Enrique Peña Nieto (PRI) in Mexico who won the presidency with a large participation but without the support of Twitter users. After two online protests against this presidential candidate - #IamnotProletariat and #Iam132 – political image could have been undermined and voters could have thought differently. But this was not the case and despite of this, the candidate won. The challenge to understand this online protest and its link to the political campaign is addressed in this paper.

Many citizens criticize political candidates using Facebook or Twitter, others build networks in Snapchat and some others try to collaborate with candidates using Periscope or WhatsApp. This research is focused in understanding this adaptation of political message on this platforms, analyzing the case of the presidential candidate Enrique Peña Nieto (PRI) in Mexico who won the presidency with a large participation but without the support of Twitter users. The Internet as a special space for political activity and political communication is becoming more and more attractive to political actors. The intensification of political activity on the Internet leads to the increase of researchers’ interest. One of the prominent areas of this research is the analysis of the efficiency of communication strategies used by politically oriented communities on the Internet. The results of such assessment contribute to, in particular, characterizing the level and features of the political engagement of Internet users into political processes. To study these processes, a telephone survey of residents of St. Petersburg was conducted. St. Petersburg was chosen because it is one of the largest cities in Russia with high Internet coverage and a high level of political activity compared to other regions. The results showed that politically oriented communities effectively implement primary communication strategies — information and presentation. More than two-thirds of politically active Internet users in St. Petersburg noted that visiting the relevant resources helped them to understand the political situation, to define their attitude toward parties, politicians, social movements and organizations. At the same time, the strategy of supporting political identification has not yet worked for the majority of users. Perhaps this is a consequence of the fact that the majority of St. Petersburg citizens have not yet found appropriate political leaders and organizations. The authors found that the majority of Internet users display an interest in politics permanently, and not only during the pre-election period. The hypothesis that one of the factors of an efficient strategy of politically oriented communities is emphasizing anti-power positions was confirmed. The survey results also confirmed the high level of opposition views among Internet users.

News satire plays with the political in ways that transgress journalistic as well as social and moral boundaries. But the ways in which audiences in different contexts engage with news satire are under-researched, despite the implications of the genre’s role for contemporary citizenship. This article asks how Swedish young adult audiences construct and negotiate news satire’s inherent transgressions, spanning across the ‘serious’ and ‘silly’. Based on interview and focus group data, the analysis shows how sustained news satire engagement entails genre work that aids the development of ‘transgression skills’. This process is stimulating, constructed as part of a complex and emotionally authentic mode of political communication, within a context where journalistic certainty has dominated. By achieving transgression skills, audiences are symbolically put on the same level as political elites and develop abilities to shift perspectives; thereby experiencing a deeper engagement with, and understanding of, political issues and performance.

Revolution? The Year 1848 in the Countryside. Contrary to widespread assumptions, it was not only in Vienna and other major European cities that revolutionary movements occurred in 1848. Rural areas too saw a wave of protests against existing institutions and experimentation with new forms of political activity, involving large segments of the population. This concerned not only the traditional resistance to the manorial system and its dues, which attained its goal in 1848 with the defeudalisation law, but multiple other phenomena too. This chapter discusses innovations in political communication, elections and parliamentary politics, the National Guard, and the reactions to the October Revolution in Vienna. It is reasonable to believe that these new experiences left permanent marks on the political consciousness of the rural population and had a long-term impact on the development of its relationship with the state.

The article analyzed the level of awareness of the youth of Primorsky Krai about the amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation, adopted by nationwide vote on July 1, 2020. The main research methods were sociological survey, systematization, structuring and analysis of sociological data. The data, obtained as a result of the survey, allowed the authors to determine the main channels of political communication between various political forces and the population under the age of 35, which were used to familiarize the population of this age group with the amendments submitted to the Constitution of the Russian Federation. The article assessed the effectiveness of the selected channels and methods of political and informational influence on Russian youth. The scientific novelty of the study is due to the fact that it attempted a sociological study of the political awareness of the youth of Primorsky Krai in the context of the nationwide vote on amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation. The results of the presented scientific work are of high applied importance due to the possibility of their application in studying mechanisms of regulating the political activity of young people. Furthermore, this research can be useful for specialists in political science and sociology.

Orasi politik (pidato) merupakan momen bagi seorang kandidat untuk bisa memperlihatkan kualitasnya baik sebagai pribadi (ramah, hangat, optimis, dan lain sebagainya), pemikir (lewat berbagai ide serta inovasi yang ditawarkan), maupun sebagai manager (kecakapan mengelola pemerintahan jika kelak terpilih sebagai presiden). Asumsi yang dibangun dalam penelitian ini adalah tidak maksimalnya pemanfaatan orasi politik (pidato) sebagai saluran komunikasi politik antara sang kandidat dengan konstituennya. Seharusnya, orasi politik bisa menjadi momentum antara kandidat dan pendukungnya untuk menyelesaikan ragam persoalan bangsa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis orasi politik kedua calon presiden pada Pemilihan Presiden 2019. Pendekatan yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan lewat studi literatur. Teknik analisis isi yang digunakan dilakukan terhadap berbagai dokumen, yang meliputi dokumentasi debat kandidat, berita pada portal media online serta orasi politik kedua kandidat pada Pemilihan Presiden 2019. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) orasi politik yang disampaikan oleh Prabowo dan Jokowi cenderung menggeneralisir permasalahan hingga menimbulkan kontroversi; (2) strategi yang digunakan kedua kandidat politik ialah legitimasi dan delegitimasi; (3) kedua kandidat bisa memperlihatkan wajah “positif” dan “negatif” yang menjadi unsur penyeimbang sehingga konflik sosial tak mudah meletup di tengah masyarakat.Kata Kunci: Orasi politik, legitimasi, delegitimasi, Pilpres 2019 ABSTRACTPolitical oration (speech) is a good moment for candidate to be able to show his quality both as a person (friendly, warm, optimistic, etc.), thinker (through various ideas and innovations offered), and as a manager (ability to manage government if one is elected as president). The assumption built in this research is that the use of political speeches (speeches) is not optimal as a channel of political communication between the candidate and his constituents. Supposedly, political speeches can be a momentum between candidates and supporters to solve various national problems. This research aims to analyze the political speeches of the two presidential candidates in the 2019 Presidential Election. This research use desciptive qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out through literature studies. The content analysis technique used was performed on various documents, which included documentation of candidate debate, news on online media portal and political speeches of both candidates in the 2019 Presidential Election. The results showed that (1) political speeches delivered by Prabowo and Jokowi tended to generalize the problem and causing controversy; (2) the strategies used by the two political candidates are legitimacy and delegitimation; (3) both candidates can show a “positive” and “negative” face which is a balancing element so as to reduce social conflict.Keywords: political oration, legitimation, delegitimation, Presidential Election
