Rapid assessments are useful methods for engaging stakeholders, standardizing monitoring activities and supporting later planning stages. This article proposes to extend rapid assessment methods into ‘rapid environmental planning’ and to use it for the education of planning professionals. For the assessment stage, the pressure–state–response model is used, with a participatory valuation of the ecosystem services through supply and demand profile and future trends. The stage of scenario building includes the XLRM methodology (externalities, actions, metrics and relationships), the trends and evaluation of proposals and uncertainties, as well as the formulation of timelines and narratives. The propositional stage included intervention projects, zoning of land use and occupation guidelines. The methodology was evaluated as a didactic resource for undergraduate teaching in a watershed in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo (Brazil). The results indicated a high educational potential for the students as well as the potential effectiveness of this planning method.

Abstract: This study aims to understand how circus teaching happens in the educational context as an extracurricular activity, through the investigation of schools experiences. Methodologically, the research is characterized as a multiple case study, qualitative in nature that included the observation of classes in two private schools with a record in a field diary; interview with five subjects, teachers and coordinators/ directors of the two schools; documentary analysis of educational planning. The results show how circus teaching in the extracurricular context is a field in full development. It is present as a practice with high participation among the students, meanwhile, focused on some circus modalities, aerial and manipulation, due to a non-systematic qualification of the responsible teachers. Teaching is carried out with male and female teachers and was shown as a playful practice, mainly in the initial years, including artistic presentations in both schools, recognizing the expressive dimension of said practice. We note in both cases that the circus has a high educational potential as a possibility in extracurricular teaching, even so, we think that it is still necessary to pay attention to the demand for specific teacher training and in the search for teaching methodologies appropriate to each educational situation.

Burn injuries are extremely common injuries for both adults and children, and yet knowledge of their management is often lacking in society and the subject is not routinely taught to clinicians. In this article, we aim to provide an overview of the pertinent points of the history, classification of burns, and rapid assessment methods for determining body surface area within primary care. This is followed by key aspects of management, referral criteria for transfer to a burns service, and important safeguarding issues surrounding burns.

How to assess the impacts of agricultural development projects is an evaluator's dilemma. Anthropologists who carry out such analyses often find that their field time is too short for careful, systematic coverage. Some object to the resulting studies, which they term "quick and dirty," and opt out of applied work. This reaction, however, does not discharge the obligation to reliably inform donors whether, where, and to what extent project activities have benefited local participants. Happily, there are scientifically responsible ways in which the challenge can be met and by which one can continue to do practical anthropology. This report on evaluation of an agricultural development project in Zaire provides one brief example in the hope that it will stimulate others to share their knowledge of rapid assessment methods and, in the process, increase the visibility and value of practical anthropology in public and private donor agencies.

ABSTRACT Actions to conserve rivers must be preceded by an environmental diagnosis, however, beyond the body of water, the adjacent atmosphere must also be characterized by ability of recognizing the human impacts and differentiate them of the natural variation of these ecosystems. This study aimed to develop a rapid assessment protocol (PAR), composed of seven parameters - vegetation, soil texture, part of the river, slope inclination slope gradient, soil depth in slope, stroke width of water course, use and land cover -, assigning them weights 0-4, in order to assess the influence of their categories in susceptibility to erosion of the river slope. The PAR was applied in 40 sampling unities (UA) in the watershed of Arroio Val de Buia in Silveira Martins, RS. From the final result of the PAR it was created erosion susceptibility classes, "stable", "susceptible" and "instable". The t test showed significant differences between the evaluated units and the Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (AHA) distinguished two classes of UA, according to the categories of susceptibility to erosion resulting from PAR. The basic parameters that determined the groupings were: soil, soil depth in slope, vegetation, the stretch of water course and, land use and land cover. We conclude that the PAR is presented as a good rapid assessment tool river, similar to the studied stream, being useful to the environmental planning considering the regional characteristics.
