The trust of depositors in the Indian banking system was shaken in September 2019 when the five-page confession letter written by Joy K Thomas, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative Bank (PMC Bank), one of the ten largest co-operative banks in India revealed gross financial irregularities, collusion and fraud in banking operations of PMC Bank from 2008 onwards. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) came into swift action and placed curbs on routine banking activities and restricted the withdrawal of money to a limited amount. Succumbing to the shock, depositors protested at several places and even, eleven depositors lost their lives. With a huge exposure of 73% of the overall loan portfolio to a single borrower, Housing and Development Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL) & group companies, that too facing insolvency proceedings, the recovery of full money was almost impossible. The malice at PMC Bank is the classic case of crony capitalism, collusion and fraud, and failure of corporate governance. The case draws important lessons for reforming co-operative banking sector and strengthening banking supervision in the country.

Banking sector plays an important role in Indian Financial Sector.It has a long history that has gone through various stages of development after Liberalization, Privatization, and Globalization (LPG) has taken place. The Indian banking sector is broadly classified into scheduled banks and non-scheduled banks. The scheduled banks are those included under the 2nd Schedule of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. The scheduled banks are further classified into: nationalised banks; State Bank of India and its associates; Regional Rural Banks (RRBs); foreign banks; and other Indian private sector banks, which are controlled and governed by Reserve Bank of India (Central Bank of India) and Ministry of Finance. In this era, the government has issued licenses to the new entrants to establish new banks to serve the Indian society. This chapter focuses on to show the various undergone phases of Indian banking system, growth of deposits and credits, technological development in Indian banking sector, services provided by the Indian banks, benefits and challenges faced by the Indian banks.

The article analyzes factors that affect growth of the share of non-performing loans in the loan portfolio of Russian banks and proposes approaches for this share forecasting on the basis of dynamics of macroeconomic indicators. It also deals with methodological issues of remote stress-test of lending agencies. Using the results of conducted stress-test of Russian banks the authors assess their perspective capital needs in 2010 and estimate the share of government assistance in capital injections. Furthermore, the authors define the scale of vulnerable banks groups in the Russian banking sector.

Background: Our study aims to verify the impact of corporate governance index on financial performance, namely return on assets (ROA), general liquidity, capital adequacy and size of company expressed as total assets in the banking sector for both a developing and a developed country. In addition, we investigate the interactive effect of corporate governance on a homogenous and a heterogeneous banking system. These two banking systems were chosen in order to assess the impact of corporate governance on two distinct types of banking system: a homogenous one such as the Romanian one and a heterogeneous one such as the Italian one. The two systems are very distinct; the Romanian one is represented by only 34 banks, while the Italian one comprises more than 350 banks. Thus, our research question is how a modification in corporate governance legislation is influencing the two different banking systems. The research implication of our study is whether a modification in legislation, thus in the index of corporate governance, is feasible for two different banking sectors and what the best ways to increase the financial performance of banks are without compromising their resilience. Methods: Using survey data from the Italian and Romanian banking systems over the period 2007–2018, we find that the corporate governance has a significant, positive and long-lasting effect on profitability and capital adequacy in both countries. Results: Taking the size of the company into consideration, the impact of the Index of Corporate Governance (ICG) on a homogenous banking system is positive while the impact on a heterogeneous banking system is negative. Conclusions: Our study provides evidence of the impact of IGC on financial performance and sheds light on the importance of the size of the company. Therefore, one can state that the corporate governance principles applied do not encourage the growth of large banks in heterogeneous banking sectors, thereby suggesting new avenues of research associated with new perspectives.

The monetary policy of British India was highly controversial during the interwar period as it aimed to protect the budgetary obligations and private commerce. The currency stabilization policy was seen as a tool to protect the British economic interest while they ruled India. The currency came under serious pressure during the World War I and Great depression, the facets of Indian currency’s dependence was exposed through the modified council bill system and Gold exchange standard. The much-needed currency reforms and banking system were conceded by the colonial administration after much wrangling for half a century.

The objective of this paper is to review China’ instructional reforms and evaluate its effectiveness based on available empirical evidences with special reference to Chinese corporate governance system and financial system. As part of the wider economic reform initiated in the late 1970s, in the 1980s, the Chinese government adopted various measures aimed at reforming state owned enterprises (SOEs). These mainly include managerial autonomy, a management responsibility system, corporatization and partial privatization of former SOEs. In addition, the Chinese government took various steps to enhance the efficiency of the banking sector. The analysis shows that China’s efforts to improve the corporate sector through its own unique gradual and piecemeal approach has been successful in terms of introducing a formal governance structure for the corporate sector, liberalizing its financial sector, improving governance of state owned banks, and most importantly, developing the private sector as the back bone of the economy.

We have concentrated on the current issues linked to the goals of banking regulation and supervision. Attention has been focused mainly on the problem of entry into and exit form the banking sector and the institutional framework banking supervision as a whole. Although we are aware that the present situation in emerging markets is far from that of standard economies, we argue that remarkable progress has been made in creating an appropriate banking system since the beginning of the 1996.


Subject Implementation of India's new Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. Significance Shrinking bank credit is hindering India’s ability to finance spending. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is relying on the recently instituted Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) as the principal instrument to address the problem of stressed assets in the banking system. Impacts The government may accelerate plans to merge stronger and weaker PSBs. Indian corporates may increase their issue of bonds denominated in domestic currency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will emphasise job creation rather than investment until the next election.

In this study, we find savings deposits have contributed significantly to the effectiveness of regulation induced consolidation within the banking sector in so far as improvements in banking system structure, output, profitability and competitiveness are concerned. Specifically, we find savings deposits are key parameters in the transition from a banking structure within which profitability is primarily determined by liquidity during the pre-consolidation period (2007–2008) to a banking structure within which profitability is primarily a function of loan portfolio growth (output) during the post-consolidation period (2010–2012). In spite of the increase in importance of savings deposits for banking system competition, output, or profitability during the post-consolidation period, savings deposit rates have decreased by about 50% between the pre- and post-consolidation periods. Interest rates on savings deposits also do not lie on the efficiency frontier for loan production. Combined, our findings indicate the benefits of consolidation that accrue from savings deposits have yet to translate into social welfare benefits for banks' retail customers.

Banking industry plays an important role in the development of an economy. Banks have become very cautious in extending loans. The reason being mounting non-performing assets (NPAs). NPAs put negative impact on the profitability, capital adequacy ratio and credibility of banks. It is defined as a loan asset, which has ceased to generate any income for a bank whether in the form of interest or principal repayment. As per the prudential norms suggested by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), a bank cannot book interest on an NPA on accrual basis. In other words, such interests can be booked only when it has been actually received. Therefore, this has become what is called as a ‘critical performance area’ of the banking sector as the level of NPAs affects the profitability of a bank. This paper touches upon the meaning and consequently the definition of a non-Performing asset, the conceptual framework of non-performing assets, classification of loan assets and provisions. The study also evaluates the adverse effect of non-performing assets on the return on total assets of Punjab National Bank Limited for the period 2013 to 2015, 2016-17, and 2019-20. Particularly discussing some remedial measures taken up by the Bank to overcome this situation of NPA.
