A Study of Digitally Enhanced People–Space Interaction: A Place-Centric Perspective

With the rapid development of information and communication technology, physical space has been increasingly enhanced by digital technology. The way people and space interact is significantly changed. In particular, an increased interest in the notion of place has emerged in examining smart city development, digital engagement, and people–technology relationships in hybrid physical–digital space. In this article, a place-centric perspective is employed to investigate digitally enhanced people–space interactions. Based on a multimethod research design that combines physical survey, field observation, and interview, this research employs a case study of a shopping mall to examine people’s everyday practices of digitally enabled placemaking. It is found that a range of digital interfaces functions as a system at various proxemic scales in hybrid space, which open up new spatialities by mediating trans-scale placemaking practices. Type-forms of digitally enabled people–space interactions are also summarized. The paper concludes that digitally enabled placemaking in this particular case is constituted within a closed mechanism. Future research directions are also raised at the end.

The advent of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has enabled the rise of ride-sharing services allowing individuals to access and request rides at a reasonably lower fee and their convenience thereby disrupting the delivery of traditional taxi services. Despite the promise of this sector, Information Systems (IS) research indicates a dearth of research examining the post-adoption behaviour of individuals in this sector. Furthermore, the concentration of studies in the developed world where the ride-sharing economy is more advanced has created an aperture of studies in the developing world. Relying on data from 133 respondents of ride-sharing services in Ghana and the Uses and Gratification (U&G) theory, we develop and analyze a model using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to understand the effects of gratification, trust, and platform quality on the continuance use of ride-sharing services. Our findings revealed that enjoyment, integrative benefits, trust, and platform quality significantly influence satisfaction. Furthermore, satisfaction was found to positively influence the continuance use intention of ride-sharing services. The moderating effects of education and user experience showed support for some relationships. Our findings, provide valuable insights into the post-adoption behaviour of users in the ride-sharing economy and offer some implications and future research directions.

Agriculture is facing new challenges in rural and urban areas, and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) may play a significant role. In this chapter, there is a background description of the ICT sector in the interface of urban and rural communities within the framework of agriculture. It describes some case analyses focused in agronomy and social sciences. In agronomy, the focuses are environment, food production, and pollution. In socioeconomics, there is a brief identification of ICT applications such as the collaboration between the university and firms. Considering the heterogeneousness of the analysis, the future research directions include different methods of studies for ICT programs (house of quality, structural organization, and others).

The purpose of this chapter is to investigate the roles of school management teams in curriculum delivery through information and communication technologies (ICTs) in education concerning e-schools' community engagement. In terms of summarizing the content, the background is provided regarding the context of this problem and a review of the literature as per the outlined objectives of the chapter and including applicable theoretical and conceptual frameworks. The methodology, research method, paradigm, and sampling techniques used are indicated, as are data collection instruments, data analysis and interpretation, and research ethics. Finally, in dealing with the issues, controversies, problems, and challenges presented in the research questions and objectives, the findings as per the empirical study conducted are outlined with the discussions of solutions and recommendations. Future research directions are also discussed before the conclusion provides a discussion of the overall coverage of the chapter.

The booming wearable market and recent advances in material science has led to the rapid development of the various wearable sensors, actuators, and devices that can be worn, embedded in fabric or accessories, or tattoos directly onto the skin. Wearable actuators, a subcategory of wearable technology, have attracted enormous interest from researchers in various disciplines and many wearable actuators and devices have been developed in the past few decades to assist and improve people's everyday lives. In this paper, we review the actuation mechanisms, structures, applications, and limitations of recently developed wearable actuators including pneumatic and hydraulic actuators, shape memory alloys and polymers, thermal and hygroscopic materials, dielectric elastomers, ionic and conducting polymers, piezoelectric actuators, electromagnetic actuators, liquid crystal elastomers, etc. Examples of the recent applications such as wearable soft robots, haptic devices, and personal thermal regulation textiles are highlighted. Finally, we point out the current bottleneck and suggest the prospective future research directions for wearable actuators.

The technological revolution that has created a vast health problem due to a drastic change in lifestyle also holds great potential for individuals to take better care of their own health. This is the focus of the presented overview of current applications, and prospects for future research and innovations. The presented overview and the main goals of the systems included are to utilize information and communication technologies (ICT) as aids in self-management of individual health challenges, for the disease Diabetes, both for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. People with diabetes are generally as mobile as the rest of the population, and should have access to mobile technologies for managing their disease. Forty-seven relevant studies and prototypes of mobile, diabetes-specific self-management tools meeting our inclusion criteria have been identified; 27 publicly available products and services, nine relevant patent applications, and 31 examples of other disease-related mobile self-management systems are included to provide a broader overview of the state of the art. Finally, the reviewed systems are compared, and future research directions are suggested.

Young adults are becoming less dependent on the car for travel. Increased use of information and communication technology (ICT) has been linked to this trend; this link suggests that ICT enables connection without wheels and thus less travel. This study tested that theory through a survey of young adults in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Two competing hypotheses were tested: (a) increased contact through ICT replaces–reduces in-person travel and (b) increased contact through ICT complements–increases in-person travel. The survey found that contact with friends was a high priority for young adults: 81% contacted friends daily through social media, 74% by phone, and 39% in person. A multinomial logistic regression tested associations between frequent in-person contact and several variables. Daily social media and telephone contact with friends was strongly associated with more frequent in-person contact. Daily social media use made someone 6.7 times more likely to have seen friends daily, while daily phone contact made someone 9.9 times more likely to have seen friends daily. The findings supported the complement–increase hypothesis (i.e., ICT use complements in-person contact rather than replaces it). Results are discussed and future research directions proposed.

Recently, with the rapid development of network, communications and computer technology, privacy preserving data mining (PPDM) has become an increasingly important research in the field of data mining. In distributed environment, how to protect data privacy while doing data mining jobs from a large number of distributed data is more far-researching. This paper describes current research of PPDM at home and abroad. Then it puts emphasis on classifying the typical uses and algorithms of PPDM in distributed environment, and summarizing their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, it points out the future research directions in the field.

The rapid development of the aviation industry has brought about the deterioration of the climate, which makes airline efficiency become a hot issue of social concern. As an important nonparametric method, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), has been widely applied in efficiency evaluation. This paper examines 130 papers published in the period of 1993–2020 to summarize the literature involving the special application of DEA models in airline efficiency. The paper begins with an overall review of the existing literature, and then the radial DEA, nonradial DEA, network DEA, dynamic DEA, and DEA models with undesirable outputs applied in airline efficiency are introduced. The main advantages and disadvantages of the above models are summarized, and the drivers of airline efficiency are analyzed. Finally, the literature review ends up with future research directions and conclusions.
