Job dissatisfaction has been linked to decreased performance and increased workplace turnover. It is, therefore, important to understand the experiences that are associated with physical education teacher job satisfaction and dissatisfaction. This study examined relationships among perceived mattering, role stress, emotional exhaustion, and job satisfaction in teacher/coaches and non-coaching physical education teachers. The participants included 500 physical educators (251 females, 249 males) from the United States. Most participants (91.20%) were Caucasian, and over half (53.60%) coached. Data were collected using an online survey, and analyzed using latent variable modeling procedures. Results supported the conceptual framework, χ2(214) = 511.49, p < .001, RMSEA = .052 (90% CI = [.046, .058], p = .216), SRMR = .06, NNFI = .95, CFI = .96, and commonly experienced pathways were invariant across coaching and non-coaching groups. A key goal for schools should be to increase teacher perceived mattering and reduce role stress and emotional exhaustion.

Purpose: To examine the workplace experience of physical education teacher educators while accounting for gender and institution type. Method: Participants included 286 U.S. faculty members (151 females and 135 males). Data were collected using an online survey that included measures of negative (i.e., marginalization, isolation, role stress, emotional exhaustion) and positive (i.e., perceived mattering, perceived organizational support) workplace experiences. Primary analyses began with a multivariate analysis of covariance followed up by univariate analyses of covariance to examine the differences in study variables based on gender and institution type. Results: Doctoral institution faculty members reported higher marginalization and lower perceived mattering and organizational support. Female faculty members reported higher role overload and emotional exhaustion. Discussion: Results highlight differences in the faculty experience across institution types as well as gender disparities. Recommendations are provided for improving the faculty experience as well as for future research in the area.

Although high school sport in Canada has traditionally been an extracurricular activity overseen by physical education teachers, recent findings demonstrate how the majority ( n = 1677, 60%) of coaches are in fact non-physical education teachers. The purpose of the present study was to compare physical education and non-physical education teachers who coach high school sport teams. A national sample of 2890 Canadian high school teacher-coaches (males = 1967, 68%) from all 10 provinces and 3 territories responded to an online survey. Significant differences were found between physical education teacher-coaches and non-physical education teacher-coaches in terms of demographic variables, perceived teacher-coach benefits, and perceived coaching efficacy, whereby physical education teacher-coaches tended to have more favorable perceptions. Based on the results, access to coach education should be facilitated, particularly for non-physical education teacher coaches.

Although much has been learned about the workplace experiences of physical education teachers, less is known about the unique experiences of adapted physical educators (APEs). Grounded in role socialization theory, the purpose of this study was to understand the relationships among perceived organizational support, resilience, perceived mattering, emotional exhaustion, and job satisfaction in APEs. The participants included 237 APEs from the United States, who completed an online survey. The primary data analyses included confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. The final structural model was a good fit for the data, χ2(199) = 327.25, p < .001, χ2/df = 1.64; root-mean-square error of approximation = .052 (90% confidence interval [.042, .062], p = .354); standardized root-mean-square residual = .050; nonnormed fit index = .959; comparative-fit index = .964. The results of this study highlight the importance of developing a workplace environment in which APEs feel supported in developing perceptions of matter, reducing emotional exhaustion, and improving job satisfaction.

Introduction Children who are deafblind have unique educational needs, especially when it comes to developing a foundation for recreation. This foundation includes a well-rounded physical education program. Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of adults who are deafblind as they recall their involvement in physical education and transition planning relating to recreation. Methods A panel of experts validated a questionnaire related to participation in physical education, the Individual Education Program (IEP), and transition meetings. Individuals who are deafblind were interviewed at the Seabeck Deafblind Retreat and at the International Deafblind Expo in Orlando, Florida. Data were analyzed by demographics, frequency counts, and qualitative responses to the open-ended questions. Results The study had three major findings: (1) Most participants were involved in their IEP meetings, yet the physical education teacher was not included in these meetings and the need for physical education and accommodations during physical education were not typically addressed. (2) Most participants attended their transition meetings, yet most never discussed recreation or physical activity—let alone how to overcome barriers to their preferred activities. (3) The majority of participants revealed that they are currently not involved in the recreation activities that they want to be. They expressed dissatisfaction with the support they received in the transition process that would have enhanced quality recreation in their lives. Discussion Based on the results presented here, participants were dissatisfied with the lack of physical education teacher involvement with IEP meetings and the limited discussion of recreation and physical activity during transition, which may have caused them to be less prepared for engagement in physical activity and recreation as adults than they might have been if more attention had been paid to these issues. Ensuring that professional preparation programs in both physical education and deafblind education emphasize the importance of modifications to the physical education curriculum as well as involvement of the whole multidisciplinary team in IEP meetings can set the student up for a successful adult life. Last, transition meetings should include the student's preferred recreation and physical activities as well as discuss the barriers to those activities. Including these topics in every transition meeting may help adolescents who are deafblind navigate their preferred recreation activities in their future. Implications for practitioners Training for current interveners and deafblind specialists should include ideas for modification to physical education. In addition, training for physical education teachers should include how to modify activities for children and youths who are deafblind. Transition training programs throughout the United States should include information about the children's recreation interests (inside and outside of the home) as well as how to overcome barriers they may face in accessing those choices.

Purpose: Grounded in occupational socialization theory, the purpose of this study was to test a conceptual framework for understanding the role of emotional intelligence and resilience in the development of perceived mattering among U.S. physical education teacher education faculty using structural equation modeling. Method: The sample included 286 U.S. faculty members (151 females and 135 males), and the data were collected through an online survey that included instruments to measure key study variables. The primary analyses used structural equation modeling to evaluate relationships hypothesized in the conceptual model. Results: While not all hypothesized relationships in the model were significant, generally, the results confirmed the hypothesized relationships among the study variables, suggesting that resilience mediates the relationship between emotional intelligence and perceived mattering. Discussion: Socioemotional skills, such as emotional intelligence, appear important for helping physical education teacher education faculty members perceive resiliency and mattering in their work. Accordingly, these skills should be considered for doctoral education and faculty development programs.

Research background and hypothesis. In recent years, the phenomenon of stress and burnout among physical education  teachers  has  been  evidenced  by  researchers  from  many  countries.  It  should  be  noted  that  all  those studies about work difficulties of physical education teachers are individual. However, despite a large number of studies conducted and the progress made in this area, a universally accepted survey identifying five most important difficulties in physical education teachers’ work usually defined in contemporary studies still does not exist. This is mainly because there is still no consensus either on the decisive factors causing those difficulties for physical education teachers or what the central symptoms actually are.Research aim was (a) to review and (b) to identify five most important difficulties in  physical education teachers’ work usually defined in contemporary studies.Research methods. This review examines research literature concerning the causes of stress and burnout of physical education teachers from the year 1999 to 2009 applying computer-aided literature search. The keywords used for the electronic search were “stress” and “burnout” or “job satisfaction” and “physical education teacher”. The main method of our research was logical deductive research literature analysis.Discussion and conclusions. Research literature review allowed identifying physical education teachers’ work difficulties (we found 24 of them). We established that the five most important difficulties in  physical education teachers’ work usually defined in contemporary studies were as follows: low status of physical education; limited equipment, facilities and supplies; lack of time; large class sizes and excessive daily workloads.Keywords: burnout, job satisfaction, physical education teacher, stress.
