The vibration dissipation mechanism of the rotating blade with a dovetail joint is studied in this paper. Dry friction damping plays an indispensable role in the direction of vibration reduction. The vibration level is reduced by consuming the total energy of the turbine blade with the dry friction device on the blade-root in the paper. The mechanism of the vibration reduction is revealed by the variation of the friction force and the energy dissipation ratio of dry friction. In this paper, the flexible blade with a dovetail interface feature is discretized by using the spatial beam element based on the finite element theory. Then the classical Coulomb-spring friction model is introduced to obtain the dry friction model on the contact interfaces of the tenon-mortise structure. What is more, the effects of the system parameters (such as the rotating speed, the friction coefficient, the installation angle of the tenon) and the excitation level on blade damping characteristics are discussed, respectively. The results show that the variation of the system parameters leads to a significant change of damping characteristics of the blade. The variation of the tangential stiffness and the position of the external excitation will affect the nonlinear characteristics and vibration damping characteristics.

A dynamic model is proposed in this paper for analyzing the nonlinear characteristics of a flexible blade. The dynamical equation of motion for a rotational flexible blade in a centrifugal force field is established based on the finite element method. A macro-stick-slip mechanical model of dry friction is established to simulate the constraint condition of the flexible blade. The combined motion of the external excitation and friction produces a piecewise linear vibration which is actually nonlinear. The numerical integration method is employed to calculate the vibration reduction characteristics of the nonlinear constrained rotating blade. The results show that the nonlinear dry friction force produced by the dovetail interface plays an important role in vibration reduction. And the effect of dry friction vibration reduction is significant when the rotating speed is slow or the friction coefficient is small. Besides, the magnitude of external excitation also has a great impact on the state of the friction. Therefore, some relevant experimental researches should be done in the future.

AbstractThe responses of a simple harmonically excited dry friction oscillator are analysed in the case when the coefficients of static and kinetic coefficients of friction are different. One- and two-parameter bifurcation curves are determined at suitable parameters by continuation method and the largest Lyapunov exponents of the obtained solutions are estimated. It is shown that chaotic solutions can occur in broad parameter domains—even at realistic friction parameters—that are tightly enclosed by well-defined two-parameter bifurcation curves. The performed analysis also reveals that chaotic trajectories are bifurcating from special asymmetric solutions. To check the robustness of the qualitative results, characteristic bifurcation branches of two slightly modified oscillators are also determined: one with a higher harmonic in the excitation, and another one where Coulomb friction is exchanged by a corresponding LuGre friction model. The qualitative agreement of the diagrams supports the validity of the results.

A novel static friction model for the unlubricated contact of random rough surfaces at micro/nano scale is presented. This model is based on the energy dissipation mechanism that states that changes in the potential of the surfaces in contact lead to friction. Furthermore, it employs the statistical theory of two nominally flat rough surfaces in contact, which assumes that the contact between the equivalent rough peaks and the rigid flat plane satisfies the condition of interfacial friction. Additionally, it proposes a statistical coefficient of positional correlation that represents the contact situation between the equivalent rough surface and the rigid plane. Finally, this model is compared with the static friction model established by Kogut and Etsion (KE model). The results of the proposed model agree well with those of the KE model in the fully elastic contact zone. For the calculation of dry static friction of rough surfaces in contact, previous models have mainly been based on classical contact mechanics; however, this model introduces the potential barrier theory and statistics to address this and provides a new way to calculate unlubricated friction for rough surfaces in contact.

Abstract Typical turbofan engine-support-structure systems having a high thrust-to-weight ratio are light, and the structure primarily comprises a plate and shells. The local vibration response of the support structure is excessively large when different frequency loads are applied. A structural vibration response control method based on dry friction damping is proposed to control the excessive vibration response. A dry friction damper with dynamic suction was designed to enhance the damping characteristics of the rotor supporting structure system in the wide frequency domain, without sacrificing the dynamic stiffness of the structure. The system is designed to effectively control the vibration response of the supporting structure at the working-speed frequency. Through theoretical modeling and simulation analyses, the influence of friction contact and damper structure characteristics on the damping effect is described quantitatively. Furthermore, the design idea and the damping process of the supporting structure are described. The calculation results show that the contact friction of the dry friction damper can consume the vibration energy of the supporting frame. A reasonable design of the contact characteristics and geometric configuration parameters of the damper can further optimize the vibration-reduction effect, and thereby improve the vibration response control design of the supporting structure system of aeroengines.

Abstract The dynamic behavior of a beam-like structure undergoing transverse vibration and subjected to a displacement-dependent dry friction force is examined. In Part I, the beam is modeled by a single mode while Part II considers multi-mode representations. The displacement dependence in each case is caused by a ramp configuration that allows the normal force across the sliding interface to increase linearly with slip displacement. The system is studied first by using first-order harmonic balance and then by using a time integration method. The stick-slip behavior of the system is also studied. Even though the only source of damping is dry friction, the system is seen to exhibit “viscous-like” damping characteristics. A strong dependence of the equivalent natural frequency and damping ratio on the displacement amplitude is an interesting result. It is shown that for a given set of parameter values, an optimal ramp angle exists that maximizes the equivalent damping ratio. The appearance of two dynamic response solutions at certain system and forcing parameter values is also seen. Results suggest that the overall characteristics of mechanical systems may be improved by properly configuring frictional interfaces to allow normal forces to vary with displacement.

After modifying the Wahime/Bay friction model, a new friction model suitable for micro-forming process without lubrication is established. In this model, it is shows that the friction coefficient is a function of strain hardening exponent, the normal pressure and the initial yield stress of material. Based on the experimental data, the micro-upsetting process is simulated using the proposed friction model. The simulation results are used to investigate the size effect on the dry friction behavior. It is found that the Coulomb’s friction coefficient is dropping with miniaturization of specimens when the amount of reduction is not too large.

In turbine blade systems, under-platform dampers are widely used to attenuate excessive resonant vibrations. Subjected to vibration excitation, the components with frictionally constrained interfaces can involve very complex contact kinematics induced by tangential and normal relative motions. To effectively calculate the dynamics of a blade-damper system, contact models which can accurately reproduce the interface normal and tangential motions are required. The large majority of works have been developed using macroslip friction models to model the friction damping at the contact interface. However, for those cases with small tangential displacement where high normal loads are applied, macroslip models are not enough to give accurate results. In this paper two recently published microslip models are compared, between them and against the simple macroslip spring-slider model. The aim is to find to which extent these models can accurately predict damper mechanics. One model is the so called GG array, where an array of macroslip elements is used. Each macroslip element of the GG array is assigned its own contact parameters and for each of them four parameters are needed: normal stiffness, tangential stiffness, normal gap and friction coefficient. The other one is a novel continuous microslip friction model. The model is based on a modification of the original classic IWAN model to couple normal and tangential contact loads. Like the GG array the model needs normal and tangential stiffness, and friction coefficient. Unlike the GG array the model is continuous and, instead of the normal gap required by the GG array, the Modified IWAN model needs a preload value. The two models are here applied to the study of the mechanics of a laboratory under-platform damper test rig. The results from the two models are compared and allow their difference, both for damper mechanics and for the complex-spring coefficients, to be assessed.

The mathematical framework for a sliding friction model for run-in and other tribological transitions is presented. The semiempirical model was developed to portray the commonly observed shapes, durations, and variations in kinetic friction coefficient versus sliding time curves. Terms in the model involve material properties and physical interface conditions such as transfer, debris accumulation, and surface roughness. The forms of individual terms are adjustable through the use of systemspecific scaling parameters in order to provide enough modeling flexibility to treat a variety of possible tribological conditions. Effects of such conditions as lubrication efficiency loss over time, and temperature build-up can be incorporated by modification of appropriate terms. Illustrative plots using the framework with several combined contributions are compared with experimental data from previous work. The basic framework of the model can be further developed to incorporate sub-models for specific sliding friction contributions and, in so doing, reduce the number of empirical system parameters required to model actual tribosystem behavior.

Based on the macroslip friction model, a new dynamic model of the shrouded blades for rotating machinery is developed to study the impact vibration between the adjacent blades. Unlike the traditional analytical method of the shrouded blade based on the simple Coulomb friction model, a new approach is developed that the macroslip friction model is used to represent a more accurate rubbing behavior (more closer to reality) between the shrouds. By means of the harmonic balance method, the friction force and the normal pressure are translated into the equivalent stiffness and the equivalent damping. The Galerkin method is adopted to reduce the dimension of the equation to obtain the 1-DOF equation of motion, and the dynamic response of the shrouded blade is solved by Runge–Kutta numerical method. The effects of parameters such as the gap of shrouds, the mass of the tip, the contact angle, and the normal stiffness between the shrouded blades on the damping characteristics are discussed. The results show that the gap of tips has a significant effect on the vibration amplitude of the blade. Within a certain range, with the decrease of the gap, the amplitude of the blade tip is getting smaller while the resonant speed is increasing. The mass of the shroud has little effect on the damping characteristics, while the contact angle has a great influence on the equivalent stiffness and damping. Increasing the contact angle to a certain extent can effectively reduce the vibration amplitude of the blade, and the normal contact stiffness also has an important influence in reducing the vibration. The research results based on the new method in this paper are compared with the published articles and agree well. The research work is important to the accurate calculations and design and control of the shrouded blades for rotating machinery.
