Two studies (a cross-sectional survey of 90 U.K. workers and an experiment with 100 U.K. workers) examined the cognitive and behavioral effects of abusive supervision. Both studies confirmed the hypothesis that workers who experience abusive supervision show paranoia and that makes them more prone to a type of cognitive error called the “sinister attribution error.” This is where workers misattribute innocent workplace events such as tripping over something or hearing colleagues laughing to malevolent motives such as wanting to harm or mock them. Study 1 also showed that abusive supervision is associated with lower well-being. Perceived organizational support buffers these effects, and this is associated with workers making fewer sinister attribution errors, thereby protecting well-being. Study 2 explored the role of contextual cues by exposing workers to images of abusive supervision. This increased their paranoia and contributed to workers making sinister attribution errors when they were asked to interpret workplace events. Moreover, depending on the types of contextual cues, workers were more likely to express the intention of workplace deviance after thinking about past experiences of abusive supervision. We recommend that corporate ethical responsibilities include training managers and workers about the negative cognitive and mental health effects of abusive supervision.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder characterized by uncertainty in etiology, symptomatology, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome. The high level of illness uncertainty that results from fibromyalgia is a risk factor for maladjustment to illness. A cross-sectional survey design was used to examine the relationships among illness uncertainty, helplessness, and subjective well-being in 138 women with fibromyalgia. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine a predictive model for mediation. We found illness uncertainty is negatively associated with subjective well-being and that helplessness strongly influences the impact of illness uncertainty on subjective well-being in women with fibromyalgia.

Emotional exhaustion and other symptoms of burnout are often found among emergency services professions, such as firefighting. Given the social importance of this activity and the high responsibility it requires, prevention and alleviation of burnout symptoms become primary concerns in ensuring the well-being of firefighters. Although work meaning is one of the factors associated with a lower risk of developing burnout, its protective role has not been studied in firefighters. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the buffering role of work meaning in the health-impairment process of the Job Demands-Resources model, targeting the relationship between job demands and related emotional exhaustion. A cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from a sample consisting of Romanian firefighters (n = 1096). Structural equation modeling indicated a positive link between job demands and exhaustion. In addition, deriving personal meaning from work was associated with lower levels of exhaustion in firefighters. A small but significant interaction effect between work meaning and job demands showed that higher levels of work meaning attenuated the positive relationship between job demands and exhaustion. In conclusion, our findings suggest that work meaning has a buffering effect on the impact of various job demands on job-related exhaustion. Nevertheless, the small effect sizes warrant further research on this topic.

Abstract Background: The outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has posed multiple challenges to healthcare systems. Evidence suggests that mental well-being is badly affected due to compliance with preventative measures in containing the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to explore the role of positive mental health (subjective sense of wellbeing) to cope with fears related to COVID-19 and general anxiety disorder in the Pashtun community in Pakistan. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 501 respondents from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa participating in an online-based study. We performed correlational analysis, hierarchical linear regression and structural equational modeling (SEM) to analyze the role of mental health in reducing fears and general anxiety disorder. Results: The results of the SEM show that positive mental health has direct effects in reducing the fear related to COVID-19 (β=-0.244, p<0.001) and general anxiety (β= -0.210, p<0.001). Fears of COVID-19 has a direct effect on increasing general anxiety (β=0.480). In addition, positive mental health also has an indirect effect (β=-0.117, p<0.001) on general anxiety (R2=0.32, p<0.001) through reducing fear of coronavirus. Conclusion: Based on these findings, there is a need to develop community health policies emphasizing on promotive and preventive mental health strategies for people practicing social/physical distancing.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore the role of psychological processes (i.e., internalized shame, self-efficacy, psychological inflexibility) regarding hearing loss in the well-being of adults who have hearing loss. Method This study used a cross-sectional survey design. Two hundred sixty-four surveys were submitted for analysis. Data were collected using a survey posted to online social media support, in audiology clinics across the country, and through national organizations supporting individuals who have hearing loss. Regressions were used to determine whether internalized shame, self-efficacy, or psychological inflexibility held any predictive value over subjects' well-being. Results Shame, self-efficacy, and psychological inflexibility significantly predicted different aspects of well-being. Conclusion Audiologists should consider the role of internalized thoughts and emotions regarding patients' hearing loss on how patients understand and manage their hearing health.

This study examined the role of both valued living and person–organization values-fit in clergy well-being utilizing an archival sample of 845 Wesleyan clergy in a cross-sectional survey design. Linear regression analysis indicated that clergy successfully living out their values in ministry work was associated with higher ratings of flourishing and lower ratings of burnout. Furthermore, mediation analyses indicated that job engagement is one of the mechanisms for both these main effects. Additionally, moderation analyses indicated that the degree of values fit between clergy and their congregation moderated the association between valued living and flourishing such that valued living was most important in environments of poor fit. Overall, this exploratory study offers important insights into the multiple roles of values in clergy well-being and provides the foundation for further investigation. Implications of the findings, as well as clinical considerations for promoting valued living with clergy, are discussed.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS In order to deliver effective treatment, the awareness of physical therapy is essential for the health care professionals. However, there is lack of cognizance among Allied Health Professionals who play a substantial contribution to patient care. Thus, the aim of conducting this study is to explore the perception about the field of physical therapy among Allied Health Professionals that may lead to improved health-related outcomes of the patients consequently increasing their quality of life. METHODOLOGY The cross-sectional survey was conducted on Allied Health Professionals, recruited through the non-probability convenience sampling technique. The data was collected through self-administered questionnaire. RESULTS It was revealed that 95% of the participants were aware about physiotherapy and its importance, 85.6% suggested that awareness session for physiotherapy should be conducted for medical professionals, 87.3% were eager to encourage their friends and family to choose the profession as physiotherapist. Further, 83.5% think that physiotherapist contributes to the well-being of individuals, 85.6% were willing to have physiotherapy. However, 20% were not interested in physiotherapy and related discussion. CONCLUSION It was concluded that majority of the participants were aware regarding the role of physiotherapy and its contribution towards the society. However, further researches should be conducted to explore the awareness related to different fields of rehabilitation among healthcare practitioners.

This study attempts to investigate the effect of Perceived Organizational Support (POS) of employees on their Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB). It also examines if there are significant differences in the impact of POS on OCB of employees due to demographic factors (age, gender, tenure, designation) of employees. POS indicates the perception of employees regarding the extent to which their organization appreciates their contribution and cares for their well-being (Rhoades & Eisenberger, 2002). OCB refers to employee participation in tasks that are not formally a part of the job description, but are beneficial for the organization as a whole (Organ & Ryan, 1995). In the current business scenario, when employee turnover rate poses a serious threat to businesses, employers increasingly value employee loyalty and dedication. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to obtain the perceptions of 272 employees working in Information Technology Enabled Services (ITeS) Sector, Bangalore, India. The results of the study indicate that POS had a significant impact on Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) of employees. Among the demographic factors, organizational tenure influenced the impact of POS on OCB. This paper has implications for employers and top management who struggle to retain their employees.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine a process through which perceived talent identification affects employee burnout. Design/methodology/approach Data for the study were collected from 242 employees using a cross-sectional survey design. Findings The findings supported the mediating role of work effort in the relationship between perceived talent identification and burnout. Furthermore, the results highlighted the moderating role of employee well-being attributions in the relationship between perceived talent identification and employee work effort. The moderated–mediated relationship for burnout was also supported. Research limitations/implications Using insights from conservation of resources and attribution theories, this study not only examined the direct relationship between perceived talent identification and feelings of burnout but also provided insights into why perceived talent identification leads to different employee outcomes. Practical implications Management should pay attention to the communication processes related to talent identification because employees’ interpretation of the underlying motives of this identification impacts their well-being (i.e. feelings of burnout). Originality/value This study examines employees’ attributions in the context of talent management and demonstrates that these interpretations play an important role in shaping their behaviours.
