This study appeared in full in the last issue of Research Ethics Review (2007; 3(1): 18). Rowena Jones is an obstetrician working in a busy hospital for women. Her research focuses on changes in women's brains during pregnancy1. Rowena plans to use magnetic resonance imaging to record images of the brains of women in the second and third trimesters and after birth at 6 and 24 weeks. Her sample consists of two groups of healthy women with uncomplicated and singleton pregnancies, the first primigravid and the second multiparous. There will be a minimum of five and a maximum of ten women in each group.

Objectives: We analyzed the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) manifestations of fetal corpus callosum abnormalities and discussed their prognosis based on the results of postnatal follow up. Methods: One hundred fifty-five fetuses were diagnosed with corpus callosum abnormalities by MRI at our hospital from 2004 to 2019. Gesell Development Scales were used to evaluate the prognosis of corpus callosum abnormalities after birth. Results: Corpus callosum abnormalities were diagnosed in 149 fetuses from singleton pregnancies, and 6 pairs of twins, 1 in each pair is a corpus callosum abnormality. Twenty-seven cases (27/155) were lost to follow up, whereas 128 cases (128/155) were followed up. Of these, 101 cases were induced for labor, whereas 27 cases were born naturally. Among the 27 cases of corpus callosum abnormality after birth, 22 cases were from singleton pregnancies (22/27). Moreover, 1 twin from each of 5 pairs of twins (5/27) demonstrated corpus callosum abnormalities. The average Gesell Development Scale score was 87.1 in 19 cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum and 74.9 in 3 cases of hypoplasia of the corpus callosum. Among the 5 affected twins, 2 had severe neurodevelopmental delay, 2 had mild neurodevelopmental delay, and 1 was premature and died. Conclusion: The overall prognosis of agenesis of the corpus callosum is good in singleton pregnancies. Hypoplasia of the corpus callosum is often observed with other abnormalities, and the development quotient of hypoplasia of the corpus callosum is lower compared with agenesis of the corpus callosum. Corpus callosum abnormalities may occur in one twin, in whom the risk may be increased.

Background. Currently, one of the topical issues of prenatal magnetic resonance imaging is accurate and timely diagnosis of pathological conditions of extrafetal structures of the fetus. In particular, the most acute problem is the need to improve the diagnostic accuracy of recognition and differentiation of placental adhesive-invasive pathology (PAIP). In the literature, there is no unified approach to the methodology and description of MRI examination of the placenta. Objective. To improve the diagnostic methods of the method of magnetic resonance imaging for the study of the placenta. Design and methods. A total of 293 MRI studies of the small pelvis of pregnant women aged 22 to 45 years (average — 35 years), in gestational age from 14 to 38 weeks (average 36 weeks) were performed and analyzed. Results. A clinical three-stage method of MRI of the placenta and an algorithm for systematized description of MRI of the placenta of pregnant women have been developed and implemented. Conclusion. The developed systematic approach to the study of the placenta will help improve the capabilities of the MRI method for examining the placenta in connection with the demand for accurate and correct interpretation of this organ in vivo.

Abstract Intrapartum transperineal ultrasound (ITU) is considered useful in judging fetal head descent; however, the inability to detect ischial spines on ITU has been a drawback to its legitimacy. The current study aimed to determine the anatomical location of ischial spines, which can be directly applied to ITU. Based on magnetic resonance imaging of 67 pregnant women at 33+ 2 [31+ 6-34+ 0] weeks gestation (median [interquartile range: IQR]), we calculated the angle between the pubic symphysis and the midpoint of ischial spines (midline symphysis-ischial spine angle; mSIA), which is theoretically equivalent to the angle of progression at fetal head station 0 on ITU, by determining spatial coordinates of pelvic landmarks and utilizing spatial vector analysis. Furthermore, we measured symphysis-ischial spine distance (SID), defined as the distance between the vertical plane passing the lower edge of the pubic symphysis and the plane that passes the ischial spines. As a result, mSIA was 109.6 ° [105.1–114.0] and SID 26.4 mm [19.8–30.7] (median, [IQR]). There was no correlation between mSIA or SID and maternal characteristics, including physique. Our results provide valuable evidence to enhance the reliability of ITU in assessing fetal head descent by considering the location of ischial spines.

His role involves asking patients to fill out a questionnaire that normally takes about 35 minutes to complete. The case study outlines three events: a patient whose eyesight is poor, another who cannot read and a receptionist who is discovered reading some of the completed questionnaires.
