Transformational Leadership and Follower’s Perceived Group Cohesiveness: Mediating Role of Follower’s Karma-yoga

This article looks at the relationship between five sub-dimensions of transformational leadership (idealised influence attributed, idealised influence behaviour, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualised consideration), follower’s karma-yoga and follower’s perceived group cohesiveness. Data were collected in a research and development organisation in India, from 771 employees (561 male and 210 female) with minimum 5 years of work experience in that organisation. Partial least squares structural equation modelling PLS-SEM analysis shows that four sub-dimensions of transformational leadership—idealised influence attributed, idealised influence behaviour, inspirational motivation, and intellectual stimulation—are positively related to follower’s perceived group cohesiveness. In addition, this relationship is partially mediated by the follower’s karma-yoga. Focusing on increasing the frequency of idealised influence attributed, idealised influence behaviour, inspirational motivation and intellectual stimulation of managers will result in making the employees more karma-yoga oriented; both these will result in increasing the follower’s perceived group cohesiveness in the organisation, making the work environment more harmonious and productive.

One of the most significant prerequisites for an innovative school is the presence of transformational leaders and knowledge sharing. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the transformational leadership on organizational innovation with the mediating role of knowledge management. It applied research by orientation, descriptive research by purpose, survey research by strategy, causal research by nature, and a questionnaire in terms of data collection methods. Data were collected from 265 school principals, expert officers and deputy managers at the Department of Education of Dasht-e Azadegan county, Khuzestan province, Iran. As the target population was small, census sampling was adopted and all the 265 members participated in the survey. For data collection, the Multifactor Leadership, Organizational Innovation, and Knowledge Management Questionnaires were used, whose reliability (using Cronbach’s alpha) was estimated to be 0.89, 0.93, and 0.91, respectively. Factor analysis was used for validity assessment. For data analysis, structural equation modeling in Amos software was employed. The results showed that components of intellectual stimulation, idealized influence, inspirational motivation, and individualized consideration, both directly and through the mediating role of knowledge management, influence organizational innovation of schools.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose and to test three models in order to examine the mechanisms through which dimensions of transformational leadership influence different forms of organizational commitment by testing the possible mediating role of leader-member exchange (LMX) dimensions. Design/methodology/approach The participants in this study are represented by 427 senior executive French employees having a university degree and minimum two years of work experience in their current organization. The relationships between different variables were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings The results indicate that the dimensions of LMX mediated the relationships between the dimensions of transformational leadership and organizational commitment dimensions. The contribution dimension of LMX acts as a consequence, rather than an antecedent of commitment. These findings are important since they may serve as a bind between leadership dimensions and the kind of organizational commitment that each of these dimensions can generate in followers. Originality/value To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first empirical study that tests the interaction of transformational leadership and LMX on organizational commitment in a French context. The originality of this work leads on investigating these three concepts as multidimensional constructs and focusing on the mediating role of LMX in the relationship between dimensions of transformational leadership and different forms of organizational commitment which can be considered as a novelty in the field of research in this area. As a result, this study addresses concerns about that lack of academic research on the mechanisms by which transformational leaders influence the organizational commitment of their followers.

This chapter examines the role of green transformational leadership on promoting green organizational behavior. Green transformational leadership has been found to be influencing green organizational behavior. The study uses content analysis and website analysis. Nedbank is used in the chapter as an archetype of an organization with a green transformational leadership which has influenced green organizational behavior. Four characteristics of green transformational leadership namely idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration were used. The leadership engages its customer and rewards them for green behavior which is important for intellectual stimulation and motivating their employees. The study contributes to the body of knowledge on green transformational behavior by confirming the relationship. The chapter recommends that more trainings and educational awareness on green values be provided to the management so that ultimately this are emulated and practiced by their employees.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the role leader attention plays in the nurture of transformational leadership (TL) behavior, as well as the mechanism by which TL affects innovation ambidexterity, this research empirically studied the relationship between leader attention scope (LAS) and innovation ambidexterity (exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation) through the mediating role of TL. Further, the moderating effect of environmental dynamism (ED) on the relationship between TL and innovation ambidexterity was examined. Design/methodology/approach Empirical study was adopted by distributing questionnaires to high echelon leaders in mainland China to assess related variables. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relationships of the variables based on the 188 returned questionnaires. Findings The results show that LAS had a positive effect on innovation ambidexterity, and the relationship was partially mediated by TL. ED negatively moderated the relationship between TL and innovation ambidexterity. Practical implications The results suggest that upper echelon leaders receive more unfamiliar, outward-oriented, and source-diverse information to broaden their attention scope. The broad outlook they get obliges them to engage in TL behavior which is beneficial for innovation ambidexterity. Originality/value Based on upper echelons theory, this research reveals the realization mechanism of innovation ambidexterity from the perspectives of leader attention and leadership behavior. This paper avoids the previous research limitation of prevalently employing demographic measurements to substitute for leaders’ psychological processes. The study of LAS also explains the formation mechanism of TL. ED is considered to examine the effectiveness of TL.

The present study aimed to examine the direct impact of transformational leadership dimensions on employee strategic renewal behaviour and venture behaviour, and through a mediating role of job satisfaction and employee commitment to organizational change. The study sample consisted of 464 employees in different firm types in Ho Chi Minh city of Vietnam. The data is analysed using a structural equation model (SEM). The paper shows that dimensions of transformational leadership (namely intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation, and individual consideration) have positive and significant influence employee strategic renewal behaviour and venture behaviour directly, and via job satisfaction and commitment to organizational change (affective commitment and normative commitment) as a moderating mechanism.

PurposeGiven the important role of innovation capability in helping firms to innovate and adapt to a fast-paced and unpredictable environment, the purpose of this study is to investigate and deepen knowledge of how transformational leadership affects radical and incremental innovation via the mediating role of positive psychological capital.Design/methodology/approachThe paper used structural equation modeling and cross-sectional design to test proposal hypotheses based on the empirical data collected from 379 participants in 89 manufacturing and service firms.FindingsThe results of this study revealed the positive and significant influence of transformational leadership on radical and incremental innovation. The findings highlighted the mediating role of individual psychological capital in the relationship between transformational leadership and aspects of innovation capability.Practical implicationsOrganizations should invest and stress on practicing transformational leadership style for their managers/directors to foster and enhance individual psychological capital and innovation capabilities.Originality/valueThe paper has extended theory of innovation management by discussing and highlighting the important role of transformational leadership and psychological capital in fostering specific aspects of innovation namely radical and incremental innovation.

This study investigates how leadership intellectual stimulation relates to team positive affect and team learning. We explore the role of positive affect as mediator between leadership intellectual stimulation and team learning. Using a cross-sectional sample of 562 employees, nested within 130 teams from 44 small and medium size organizations, we implemented Structural Equation Model analysis at the team level. Results provides evidence of the strong influence that intellectual stimulation have on team learning and team positive affect, as well as the potential of positive affect for stimulate team learning. Team positive affect serves as partial mediator between intellectual stimulation and team learning, contributing to explain significant additional variance. Leadership intellectual stimulation is a relevant team social resource that provides support for team learning. As well, positive affect contributes significantly to improve learning among teams. This suggests the importance of developing leadership behaviors that encourage learning and team positive affect, which contributes to team learning and hence to performance.

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the effects of transformational leadership on individuals and organization’s innovation capability via the mediating role of employees' positive psychological capital (Psy-Cap) namely self-efficacy and optimism.Design/methodology/approachStructural equation modeling (SEM) is used to test proposal hypotheses through the empirical data collected from 330 participants at 90 firms in Vietnam.FindingsThe research findings revealed that self-efficacy and optimism significantly mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and innovation capabilities. In addition, self-efficacy has a greater impact on innovation capabilities compared with the effect of optimism.Practical implicationsThe findings highlight the important role of practicing transformational leadership style to nurture and foster both employees' positive psychology sources and firms' innovation capability.Originality/valueThe paper has significantly advanced and deepened our understanding of how transformational leaders connect with employees to nurture and develop one of the most special aspects of human resource in contemporary working environment called employees' positive Psy-Cap for stimulating firm's innovation capabilities.

PurposePresently, there is a need for graduate students to be well prepared with accounting professional competencies (APCs) as the market is characterized by intensive activities and rare job opportunities. In relation to this is the significant role of student engagement (SE) practices and e-learning. Thus, the present study examined the mediating role of e-learning on the relationship between SE practices and APC, as well as the moderating role of student's demographics on the same relationship.Design/methodology/approachThe study used a structured questionnaire distributed to 428 accounting students enrolled in institutions in Jordan and the obtained response rate was 65.84%. The formulated hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling in PLS-SEM analysis Version 3.2.7.FindingsOn the basis of the results, there is a significant relationship between SE and e-learning and APC, with e-learning partially mediating the SE-APC relationship. The results also showed that students' demographics have a significant moderating relationship between the same.Originality/valueThe author recommends that universities employ advanced technologies with SE practices for the mobilization of accounting graduate students, with the prerequisite APC skills so they will become competitive and thrive in their professional and practical lives.

PurposeThe purpose of the present study is to examine the direct impact of transformational leadership on non-family employee intrapreneurial behaviour and through a mediating role of corporate adaptive culture and psychological empowerment in family-owned firms.Design/methodology/approachThe study’s sample consisted of 368 key role non-family employees at 109 family export and import firms in the Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam. The data is analysed using a partial least square–structural equation model (PLS-SEM).FindingsThis paper shows that transformational leadership had a positive and significant influence on non-family employee intrapreneurial behaviour directly and via adaptive corporate culture and psychological empowerment as a mediating influence mechanism.Practical implicationsFamily-owned firms might balance the need to maintain traditional core values and requires innovation through the development of human capital with non-family employee intrapreneurship.Originality/valueThis paper grants a unique approach to studying intrapreneurial behaviour in the context of the family-owned business.
