Practice to Research: Rapport as Key to Creating an Effective Learning Environment

Rapport is an instructional variable that is “tricky to understand,” which is perhaps the reason why it is understudied in the extant literature. Certainly, essays, tip lists, and effective teaching mantras often claim rapport as vital to the instructional context, but that is typically the extent of most examinations, particularly in management education. In this practice-to-research article, my experiences are integrated with the limited published evidence surrounding rapport, and research propositions are offered to inform future business education studies.

Recent Australian research has identified that the success of an Indigenous business greatly relies on the business acumen of its owner. Whilst business education offered through Business Schools is seemingly open to all, Indigenous Australian participation in these educational offerings have been low. In contrast the number of Indigenous businesses emerging in Australia over the past decade is building a demand for Indigenous specific business education offerings. The MURRA Indigenous Business Master Class at Melbourne Business School is such an example of an Indigenous business education program. We discuss how this program implements an andragogical philosophy into the Indigenous teaching and learning approach of business education to take into consideration an individual’s cultural and business knowledge to contextualise business learning. This paper identifies a framework of andragogy principles that contributes to the learning environment for Indigenous entrepreneurs. We identify four key learning principles and offer an evidence based model to progress business education. Through well designed Indigenous business education, business education can provide Indigenous entrepreneurs with an effective learning environment that integrates their cultural identity, highlights Indigenous knowledges and allows for the development of skills to support self-determination practices.

This paper illustrates the information literacy (IL) strategy in an undergraduate Management program at U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The paper exemplifies a sequential approach that improves students’ capabilities to evaluate and apply information in a specifically designed learning environment while generating new knowledge in undergraduate business coursework. The paper also emphasizes how IL can be developed within management coursework through a six-step process, including defining, locating, selecting, organizing, presenting, and assessing.  This specially designed framework of IL learning can be applied across all relevant courses using specially designed assignments in the Management major.

The start of management education in India in the early 1960s has been dominantly described from the perspective of ‘Americanisation’, characterised by isomorphism and mimicry. Existing scholarship has avoided the question of how management education and knowledge were reconciled and naturalised with India’s specific socio-economic contexts. This article addresses the issue and provides a situated account of this complex history by delving into the establishment of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, one of India’s first and most prominent management schools. Using the concept of sociotechnical imaginary developed by Jasanoff and Kim, the analysis describes how the development of management education and research was aligned with the objective of nation building. The article shows that the project to start management education did not take off before the capitalist connotations, associated with business education, were subtly removed and a narrative was created that put management education in the context of India’s wider development trajectory. Under influence of a changing political atmosphere in the late 1960s, a particular imaginary on the role of management knowledge and education unfolded in the development of the institute, giving the field in India a distinct character in the early 1970s.

This study primarily unearths measure and evaluate the determinants influencing business students' learning motivation at universities in Ho Chi Minh City through the self-administered questionnaires with 257 students. The results show all seven factors of (1) social factors; (2) learning environment; (3) lecturers’ behaviour; (4) family and friend influence; (5) students’ self-awareness; (6) student’s willpower and (7) student viewpoint have impacted on learning motivation of business students. In addition, suggestions and recommendations are proposed to enhance student motivation in higher education.

The need to face emerging challenges squarely should not be disregarded in today’s world. Higher education is at the centre of preparing future business professionals and equipping them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they will need address the emerging challenges of this century. Making specific reference to the Secretarial Component of Business Education, this paper demonstrates that contemporary needs are changing rapidly.
