Stroke rehabilitation techniques have gathered an immense attention due to the addition of virtual reality environment for rehabilitation purposes. Current techniques involve ideas such as imitating various stroke rehabilitation exercises in virtual world. This makes rehabilitation process more attractive as compared to conventional methods and motivates the patient to continue the therapy. However, most of the virtual reality based stroke rehabilitation studies focus on patient performing sedentary rehabilitation exercises. In this chapter, we introduce our virtual reality based post stroke rehabilitation system that allows a post stroke patient to perform dynamic exercises. With the introduction of our system, we hope to increase post stroke patient's ability to perform their daily routine exercises independently. Our discussion in this chapter is mainly centered around collaboration of rehabilitation system with virtual reality software. We also detail the design process of our modern user interface for collecting useful data during rehabilitation. A simple experiment is carried out to validate the visibility of our system.

Stroke rehabilitation plays an important role in recovering the lifestyle of stroke survivors. Although existing research proved the effectiveness and engagement of nonimmersive virtual reality- (VR-) based rehabilitation systems, limited research is available on the applicability of fully immersive VR-based rehabilitation systems. In this paper, we present the elicited requirements of a fully immersive VR-based rehabilitation system that will be designed for domestic upper limb stroke patients; we will also provide an initial conceptual prototype of the proposed system.

This paper presents the current state of stroke rehabilitation in Japan. The Japanese rehabilitation system is much different from those in other countries, mainly because of the Japanese insurance system, which covers from acute to chronic conditions. In this situation, a Japanese inpatient stroke rehabilitation program treats patients until they reach a plateau in impairment and disability. Thus we can evaluate the true func tional prognosis because of longer periods of observation for assessing the recovery pat tern of impairment and disability. As a result, we can predict stroke outcome much more precisely. We recently developed a new evaluation methods for stroke patients called the Stroke Impairment Assessment Set (SIAS) based on work from the Sym posium on Methodologic Issues in Stroke Outcome Research in 1989. Using the SIAS and the Functional Independence Measure, we have successfully predicted stroke out come using regression analysis.
