Abstract Background The incidence of congenital bronchoesophageal fistulas in adults is rare. Most fistulas discovered in adulthood are often small and can be repaired with a simple one-step method. Case presentation A 46-year-old female patient complained of a 2-month history of chocking, coughing, and a 12 kg drop in weight. The bronchofiberscopy and gastroscopy showed a large fistula, which extended from the esophagus to the main bronchus on both sides, thus forming a special three-way channel which has never been reported. This case was challenging both to the anesthetists and surgeons. The patient was intubated with a sengstaken-blakemore tube, and then received segmental esophageal resection, anastomotic reconstruction, and double-flap repair with esophagus segment in situ. Conclusion When the fistula in BEF is large or complicated, appropriate surgical methods should be meticulously designed according to the condition of the patient. The problem of anesthesia intubation should be solved first, to allow a smooth operation. Secondly, a double-layer repair of the airway fistula by using esophageal wall tissues as patch materials is proposed.

In recent years, bamboo has been widely used for building materials and household goods. However, bamboo is flammable, so a flame-retardant treatment for bamboo is urgently needed. In this work, nano MgAl-layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) coated on bamboo, which was called MgAl-LB, was synthesized by an in situ one-step method. To determine the optimal in situ time, the effects of different reaction times on LDH growth on the bamboo surface and the flame retardancy of the MgAl-LBs were investigated. The SEM observations show that LDH growth on the surface of bamboo was basically saturated when the in situ reaction time was 24 h. Abrasion experiments show that MgAl-LDH coating has good abrasion resistance. The fire performance of the MgAl-LBs was evaluated by cone calorimeter tests, which indicated that the THR and TSP of the MgAl-LBs were significantly lower than those of untreated bamboo. Taking into account the energy consumption problem, determining the reaction time of 24 h is the optimal reaction time. Compared with untreated bamboo, the THR and TSP of MgAl-LB prepared at 24 h decreased by 33.3% and 88.9%, respectively.

Abstract The paper illustrates a fundamentally different approach applied to Blade Tip-Timing analysis in the background of works performed through the long history of this method. New innovative approach is based on the precise separation of measured data that was published in previous works. In this respect, the construction of the signal profile is intended for fast and accurate definition of the regulation function served to expression of the complete speed fluctuation and its instabilities. Following, the presented signal profile is demonstrated on four variants of data processing in two significantly different operations, where it allows the application of a one-step approach. Finally, these results are also compared with a two-step method used in previous cases without the signal profile. The benefit of the suggested procedure of the signal profile calculation is evident in the possibility of processing more complex functions in deterministic methods without limiting the characteristic advantages of these methods.

Abstract Background Although there are reports of otolaryngological symptoms and manifestations of CoronaVirus Disease 19 (COVID-19), there have been no documented cases of sudden neck swelling with rash in patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection described in literature. Case presentation We report a case of a sudden neck swelling and rash likely due to late SARS-CoV-2 in a 64-year-old woman. The patient reported COVID-19 symptoms over the previous three weeks. Computed Tomography (CT) revealed a diffuse soft-tissue swelling and edema of subcutaneous tissue, hypodermis, and muscular and deep fascial planes. All the differential diagnoses were ruled out. Both the anamnestic history of the patient’s husband who had died of COVID-19 with and the collateral findings of pneumonia and esophageal wall edema suggested the association with COVID-19. This was confirmed by nasopharyngeal swab polymerase chain reaction. The patient was treated with lopinavir/ritonavir, hydroxychloroquine and piperacillin/tazobactam for 7 days. The neck swelling resolved in less than 24 h, while the erythema was still present up to two days later. The patient was discharged after seven days in good clinical condition and with a negative swab. Conclusion Sudden neck swelling with rash may be a coincidental presentation, but, in the pandemic context, it is most likely a direct or indirect complication of COVID-19.

Synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HA) in organic solutions has received extensive attention in recent years with an attempt to obtain HA of a nanometer level. In this preliminary study, we demonstrated that organic-HA nanocomposites could also be achieved with one step method via in situ mineralization and subsequent crosslinking of organic species. This design was realized through in situ synthesis of hydroxyapatite in poly(vinyl alcohol) and acrylic acid aqueous solution as an organic template. The aforementioned organic-inorganic nanocomposites were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electrical microscopy, thermal analysis. The comparative structural measurements were also conducted with the synthesized HA with absence of the organic template. The results indicated that the existence of organic species effectively inhibits the growth of calcium phosphate and that relatively pure HA can be obtained in sintered composite products. The present study provides a direct and versatile route for fabrication of nanocomposite biomaterials.

Abstract Background We report a rare case of primary abdominal cocoon with bilateral cryptorchidism. Case presentation The patient had a history of laparoscopic surgery for bilateral cryptorchidism 6 years earlier. He was admitted to the hospital again due to intestinal obstruction. Surgery was performed on the patient after the failure of conservative treatment. The patient was diagnosed with primary abdominal cocoon. Instead of the greater omentum, many cocoon-like tissues surrounding the bowel were seen during operation. Abdominal surgery can increase the risk of intestinal adhesion, which is one of the main causes of intestinal obstruction, especially in patients with abdominal cocoon. We hypothesize that the surgery 6 years earlier to address transabdominal bilateral cryptorchidism accelerated the patient’s intestinal obstruction. Conclusion This case implies that it is important for urologists to evaluate whether their patients exhibit abdominal cocoon before cryptorchidism surgery, to choose better surgical methods and reduce the risks of poor prognosis.

Abstract Background Thyroid hemiagenesis is a rare congenital anomaly in which one lobe of the thyroid gland fails to develop. There is an increased incidence of associated thyroid disorders in patients with thyroid hemiagenesis. Case presentation A 32-year-old Ugandan woman presented with a complaint of painless neck swelling of 3-months duration. The swelling was associated with a globus sensation. There was no history of thyroid – related problems or treatment prior to this presentation. Physical examination demonstrated a mobile right thyroid swelling without an obvious nodular contour. Neck ultrasound showed an absent left lobe of thyroid gland, a right lobe with a solitary nodule scoring two points on the Thyroid Imaging, Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS) and an isthmus in situ. Extensive search for possible ectopic thyroid tissue was negative. She was biochemically euthyroid. The patient was counseled about thyroid hemiagenesis and was put on a regular follow up in the clinic for the TI-RADS 2 nodule. Conclusion Thyroid hemiagenesis is often associated with other thyroid disorders. Its diagnosis should prompt an active search for other associated morphological or functional thyroid abnormalities.
