Abstract Background Mental health represents an important public health issue, and mental health problems have been linked to school dropout. This study aimed to identify mental health groups of high school students using both positive and negative aspects of mental health and to examine whether these mental health groups longitudinally predict school dropout. Methods We conducted latent class analysis using the Danish National Youth Study 2014 (n = 60,526; mean 17.9 years) to identify clustering of mental health (11 items covering positive and negative aspects of emotional wellbeing and functioning in daily life), separately by sex. The relationship with subsequent school dropout was examined using logistic regression models, adjusted for age, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Information on dropout status was obtained through educational registers. Results School dropout rates was highest among first-year students. Four mental health groups were identified: Flourishing (females: 38%, males: 55%), moderate mental health (females: 15%, males: 20%), emotionally challenged (females: 28%, males: 15%) and languishing (females: 19%, males: 10%). Compared to the flourishing group, adjusted odds ratio (AOR) for dropout were 3.43 (95% CI: 2.98, 3.95), 1.73 (95% CI: 1.45, 2.06) and 1.76 (95% CI: 1.52, 2.04) in the languishing, moderate mentally healthy and emotional challenged females. Results in males were comparable. Conclusions Mental health in high school students cluster together in four categories among both males and females. Students who are languishing, emotionally challenged or moderate mentally healthy have about 1.5-fold to threefold higher risk of dropping out of high school compared with flourishing students. Universal mental health interventions may be a promising strategy, particularly in the first year of high school where most students drop out of school.

Approximately one in five adolescents experience mental health problems globally. However, studies on mental health problems in Chinese high school students are few. Therefore, this study examined the status and associated factors of mental health problems in high school students in China. A stratified two-stage cluster sampling procedure was adopted, leading to a final sample of 15,055 participants from 46 high schools in all 17 provincial cities of Henan province, China. Self-reported questionnaires were used to collect the data. A mental health problems variable was assessed using the Mental Health Inventory of Middle School Students. The positive rate of mental health problems among high school students was 41.8%, with a male predominance (43.3% versus 40.2% in females; p < 0.01). The most frequent mental health problem was academic stress (58.9%). Higher grades, physical disease, chronic constipation, alcohol consumption, engagement in sexual behavior, residence on campus, and living in nonurban areas and with single-parent families were significantly associated with higher odds of having mental health problems (p < 0.05). We suggest that the prevention of mental health problems in high school students be strengthened, especially in students with physical illnesses, unhealthy behaviors, and single-parent families.

Well-being is an indicator of students’ happiness in school. There is currently a need to identify students’ well-being in order to know the conditions of students’ mental health and their levels of contentment in school. The existing instruments of student well-being in Indonesia have numerous items, which can impact the participants’ behavior in filling out the questionnaires. Therefore, there was a need for a shorter version of the instruments. This research focused on the adaption of the Brief Adolescent Subjective Well-Being in School Scale (BASWBSS), an instrument for subjective well-being with only eight items and was previously developed by Tian, Wang, and Huebner (2015) among high school students in China. A total of 235 Indonesian students, both high school and first-year university students were the participants in this study. Reliability testing using internal consistency, while construct and criterion validity testing was implemented to test this scale's psychometric properties in the Indonesian context. The result of this study indicated that the adaptation of Brief Adolescent Subjective Well-Being in School Scale (BASWBSS) was valid and reliable for Indonesian students. Kesejahteraan merupakan indikator kebahagiaan siswa di sekolah. Saat ini, terdapat kebutuhan mengidentifikasi kesejahteraan siswa untuk mengetahui kondisi kesehatan mental dan tingkat kepuasan mereka di sekolah. Alat ukur kesejahteraan siswa yang ada di Indonesia memiliki banyak butir pertanyaan, yang dapat berdampak pada perilaku partisipan dalam mengisi kuesioner. Karenanya, dibutuhkan versi pendek dari alat ukur tersebut. Penelitian ini berfokus pada adaptasi Brief Adolescent Subjective Well-Being in School Scale (BASWBSS), sebuah alat ukur kesejahteraan subjektif dengan delapan butir yang dikembangkan oleh Tian, Wang, dan Huebner (2015) untuk siswa sekolah menengah atas di Tiongkok. Sebanyak 235 siswa Indonesia, yang merupakan siswa sekolah menengah atas dan mahasiswa tahun pertama, menjadi partisipan dalam penelitian ini. Uji reliabilitas dilakukan menggunakan konsistensi internal, sedangkan uji validitas konstruk dan validitas kriteria digunakan untuk menguji aspek psikometri dalam konteks Indonesia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hasil adaptasi dari Brief Adolescent Subjective Well-Being in School Scale (BASWBSS) valid dan reliabel untuk siswa di Indonesia.

This study examined the associations between co-occurring cyberbullying and school bullying victimization with poor self-rated mental health, psychological distress, and suicidal ideation and attempts among 4,886 Canadian students in Grades 7–12 and tested whether these associations differed between middle and high school students. There are 12.2% of students who were victims of both cyberbullying and school bullying. After adjusting for covariates, victims of both cyberbullying and school bullying presented the highest odds of poor self-rated mental health (odds ratio [OR] = 5.02; 95% CI [3.75, 6.74]), psychological distress (OR = 5.91; 95% CI [4.38, 7.96]), and suicidal ideation (OR = 6.17; 95% CI [4.44, 8.56]) and attempts (OR = 7.68; 95% CI [3.95, 14.93]). These associations were stronger among middle-school youth than their high school counterparts. Results suggest that victims of both cyberbullying and school bullying may constitute the most vulnerable group and that there is a need for intervention programs addressing both forms of bullying simultaneously, particularly among middle school students.

Mental health in adolescents represent a considerable public health issue in developing countries. These problems are considered a source of problem for adolescents’ quality of life. The study objective was to determine the association between mental health problems and sociodemographic variables among adolescents. A cross-sectional study was conducted from October to December 2016 using a school-based survey in 4 districts and 3 cities in West Java Province, Indonesia. Stratified multistage random sampling was used to select junior and senior high school students and self-administered questionnaires were used to collect study data which included: personal data, socioeconomic status scale, and self-reported version of Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) which divided into 5 subscales. About 3452 adolescents of 32 schools were included in this study, 59% female, 56% junior high school, 56% district residence, most parents’ education were senior high school. The prevalence of mental health problems based on SDQ subscale as total difficulties, conduct problem, emotional symptoms, peer problems, hyperactivity-inattention, were abnormal 31.6, 38.9, 30, 29.3, 15.6, respectively. Mental health problems were more prevalent amongst adolescents in junior high school and residence in district area, with RR and 95% CI were 1.14 (1.04-1.26), and 1.18 (1.08-1.30). As conclusions mental health problems in adolescents were associated with education level and residence area

ABSTRAK Penyalahgunaan napza masih cukup tinggi di Indonesia. Pasien narkoba yang berusia 15 – 19  tahun di Rumah Sakit Ketergantungan Obat meningkat pada tahun 2013 sebanyak 54 orang. Begitupula halnya masalah kesehatan jiwa pada rentang usia 15 – 24 tahun dengan prevalensi 6,2% dengan gangguan depresi. Selain gangguan depresi, penyalahgunaan napza juga memberikan dampak pada kesehatan jiwa. Tujuan penyuluhan kesehatan ini adalah untuk memberikan informasi untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan siswa SMA/sederajat di Kabupaten Kolaka terkait penyalahgunaan napza dan masalah kesehatan jiwa terkhusus pada remaja. Penyuluhan kesehatan ini berupa presentasi materi menggunakan media powerpoint. Seluruh siswa SMA mengikuti jalannya penyuluhan kesehatan hingga selesai. Hal ini dapat dilihat dengan keaktifan seluruh siswa selama mengikuti kegiatan penyuluhan kesehatan sehingga pemahaman terhadap napza dan kesehatan jiwa pun dapat meningkat. Kata Kunci :Edukasi, Napza, kesehatan jiwa  ABSTRACT Drug use is still quite high in Indonesia. Drug patients aged 15-19 years at the Rumah Sakit Ketergantungan Obat increased in 2013 as many as 54 people. Likewise, mental health problems in the age range 15-24 years with a prevalence of 6.2% with depressive disorders. Apart from depressive disorders, drug use also has an impact on mental health. The purpose of this health education is to provide information to increase the knowledge of high school/equivalent students in Kolaka Regency regarding drug use and mental health problems, especially in adolescents. This health counseling is in the form of material presentation using PowerPoint media. All high school students follow the health counseling to completion. This can be seen from the activeness of all students during health education activities so that their understanding of drugs and mental health can increase. Keywords : Education, drugs, mental health
