The study was carried out to identify the parasite and causative diseases on cage reared tilapia at Bakerganj upazila, Barisal district. The infected tilapia fishes were collected from the cages and brought to the laboratory to find out signs, symptoms and infection area on the fish body. Physico-chemical parameters of water, such as water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate and ammonia were monitored fortnightly. The values of water temperature (°C), pH, dissolved oxygen (mg/l), nitrate (mg/l), phosphate (mg/l) and ammonia (mg/l) were 32.4±2.1, 6.2±0.3, 7.52±0.4, 0.028±.008, 11.30±2.26 and 0.09±0.02, respectively but the concentration of nitrate was so higher during the study time. Eleven species of parasites namely, Chilodonella sp, Trichodiniasp., Gyrodactylussp.,Cichlidogyrus sp., Capillariasp, Orientocreadium sp, Eustrongylidae sp, Allocreadium sp, Euclinostomum sp, Tylodelphys sp. and Metagonimus spwere were identified. Parasites were found on all the examined parts of the fish body but gill showed the most infested area of the host. Highest mortality rate was occurred in the month of October and lowest mortality rate was in July. In this circumstance, proper management system and handling are best ways to prevent diseases and reduce the mortality rate of tilapia on cage farming in the southern area. Res. Agric., Livest. Abstract Background Despite the favorable geo-climatic potential of Cameroon, the national production of tilapia remains low due to poor tilapia growth reported by fish farmers. One of the underlying reasons is the early female maturation at a very small size and precocious breeding in earthen ponds, resulting in overpopulation which leads to stunted growth and therefore to the production of unmarketable fish size. Studies have shown that dietary supplementation of G. kola enhanced growth in young Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis niloticus. It was also reported that G. kola inhibited spawning in Tilapia adult females. Therefore, this study sought to assess the effects of Garcinia kola as growth promoter and inhibitor of gonadal development in young Oreochromis niloticus. Methods A total of 108 juveniles weighing 13.32 ± 0.62 g were randomly distributed in 9 hapas of 12 fishes each (9 females and 3 males) and fed for 70 days with three isonitrogenous diets, 40% crude protein with increasing Garcinia kola supplementation levels of 0 (normal diet), 6% and 10% (experimental diets). Physico-chemical parameters of the water (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and transparency) were measured twice a week. Every 14 days, fish were harvested, counted, and weighed. At the end of the experiment, three fish of each sex per replicate were sacrificed and their gonad and liver collected and weighed. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance repeated measure followed by Newman-Keuls multiple tests. Results The results showed that all physico-chemical parameters of the water were within the recommended values for Tilapia culture. Tilapia fed 6% Garcinia kola supplemented diet displayed higher final body weight in males (38.60 ± 3.50 g) and females (36.77 ± 3.62 g) compared to those receiving normal diet (36.23 ± 1.36 g and 25.87 ± 3.32 g; respectively to the final body weight in males and females). The gonadosomatic index and hepatosomatic index indicated no significant variation in males while in females, these were significantly low in the experimental fish compared to control fish. Conclusion The results of this study demonstrated that supplementation of G. kola seeds in diets of young Tilapia improved growth performance and impaired gonadal development in females.

To assess the growth and culture potentials of Indian white prawn Penaeus indicus, locally knownas Chaka Chingri, a preliminary trial was conducted for a period of 145 days in earthen ponds. The postlarvae were collected from Sundarbans coast and stocked in 3 ponds of 0.056 ha each with the stockingdensity at 30, 40 and 54 m-2in T1,T2 and T3 treatments respectively. Commercial pelleted feed with 36%protein was fed. Production and physico-chemical parameters were recorded and analyzed according tostandard methods. After 145 days of rearing, obtained average final weight was 22.18±6.71g, 25.25±3.11gand 29.25±2.88g; with the estimated yield of 1197 kg/ha, 3030 kg/ha, and 3632 kg/ha, survival was 18%,30% and 23% in T1, T2 and T3 treatments respectively. Results and findings of the present study suggestedthat P. indicus might be potential mariculture candidate in the coastal areas of Bangladesh.

The study on a survey of fish fauna distributions and abundance in Gwaigwaye Reservoir, Katsina State was carried out from May 2013 to April 2014 to establish physical, chemical, and biological parameters (fish) of Gwaigwaye reservoir. Four sampling stations were selected. Some physico-chemical parameters were also determine to assess the level of pollution of the reservoir using standard methods and procedures which were correlated with the different fish species to determine fish abundance and distributions. Analysis of variance indicates no significant difference in fish fauna distribution and abundance among the four stations (P>0.05). The result indicated Fish fauna percentage composition were Tilapia zilli (17.32%), Clarias gariepinus (16.17%), Oreochromis niloticus (15.27%), Lates niloticus (13.80%), Bagrus. bayad (12.91%), Momyrus senegalensis (9.90%), Labeo senegalensis (7.41%) and Synodontis clarias (7.28%).

In Bangladesh, shrimp post-larvae (PL) are mainly produced in hatcheries. From 2000s shrimp PL are reared in nurseries containing small earthen ponds by relatively poor people for a few days before stocking into the shrimp farms. This study assesses the physical and chemical parameters of five such nurseries at Satkhira district, Bangladesh using scientific instruments and semi-structured questionnaire. The nursing process involved stocking of PL (4151.8 ± 1581.35 PL/m2) in small earthen ponds (<18m2 area/pond) and raring for up to 10 days with feeding. Most of the physico-chemical parameters were within the suitable range recommended for shrimp culture. The survival rate of PL ranged from 80% to 90%. The nursing system was profitable as the average Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) was 1.19. The establishment and operation of these nurseries do not require any expensive equipment or complex technology and can be run by less educated and poor people. However, constraints like lack of credit and continuous water supply are hindering the scaling up of these nurseries in size and number. By providing means to overcome the constraints these nurseries can be an excellent income generating source for the poor entrepreneurs as well as contribute in increasing shrimp production in Bangladesh.
