In Bangladesh, shrimp post-larvae (PL) are mainly produced in hatcheries. From 2000s shrimp PL are reared in nurseries containing small earthen ponds by relatively poor people for a few days before stocking into the shrimp farms. This study assesses the physical and chemical parameters of five such nurseries at Satkhira district, Bangladesh using scientific instruments and semi-structured questionnaire. The nursing process involved stocking of PL (4151.8 ± 1581.35 PL/m2) in small earthen ponds (<18m2 area/pond) and raring for up to 10 days with feeding. Most of the physico-chemical parameters were within the suitable range recommended for shrimp culture. The survival rate of PL ranged from 80% to 90%. The nursing system was profitable as the average Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) was 1.19. The establishment and operation of these nurseries do not require any expensive equipment or complex technology and can be run by less educated and poor people. However, constraints like lack of credit and continuous water supply are hindering the scaling up of these nurseries in size and number. By providing means to overcome the constraints these nurseries can be an excellent income generating source for the poor entrepreneurs as well as contribute in increasing shrimp production in Bangladesh.

The main focus of the study was to examine the scope of beekeeping in Bangladesh. The data were collected from beekeepers of Tangail and Gopalgonj districts, because this enterprise is working more in these areas than others in Bangladesh. Fifty-four beekeepers were selected randomly and they were interviewed for getting the necessary data to determine the costs and return of beekeeping and to assess the scope of beekeeping. Forty six percent of the total beekeepers had own land of 0.51 to 1.50 acres and 37 per cent of them were young beekeepers in the age group of 15-30 years. Most of the beekeepers took it as a main occupation. The benefit cost ratio of beekeeping was 1.59 which showed that this business was profitable. It will be a great source of employment creation for the rural poor people to reduce the poverty. There is a great prospect of beekeeping in Bangladesh on the basis of the socio-economic context of the country and some special features of the enterprise. There are some problems identified by the beekeepers and they have suggested some solutions also. Finally the authors have drawn some recommendations to expand beekeeping enterprise in Bangladesh.
An experiment was conducted to assess the impact of different intercrops like maize, pea, strawberry, cabbage, red clover, french bean, oats and maize on cropping, quality and relative economic yield of cherry cv. Misri under Kashmir conditions. The results obtained revealed significant improvement in cherry trees intercropped with leguminous crops like pea, red clover and french bean than clean cultivation and heavy feeder crops (requiring high level of soil nutrients) like strawberry, cabbage, oats and maize. Highest per cent fruit set, fruit maturity, fruit yield and fruit physico-chemical characteristics were recorded maximum in cherry trees with leguminous type of crops. The impact of intercrops on relative economic yield of cherry (system equivalent yield) revealed that the cherry plants intercropped with pea had better benefit: cost ratio (1.71) followed by cabbage (1.41), red clover (1.40) and French bean (1.39) than clean cultivation (1.34).

Prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) culture is socially more acceptable, technically and economically viable and sustainable. The freshwater catfishes Heteropneustes fossilis (shing) and Clarias batrachus (magur) adapt well to hypoxic water bodies and high stocking densities as well. So, shing and magur may be a good candidate to culture with prawn in ponds/ghers to save the farmers from losing their investment in case of shrimp mortality and getting additional income from fish. With this view, this study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of polyculture with three treatments each with three replications. Stocking density of shing was variable i.e., 200nos/decimal in T1, 300nos/decimal in T2 and 400 nos/decimal in T3. On the other hand, stocking density of magur and prawn juveniles was 50 and 30 nos/decimal respectably for all treatments. The experimental ghers were treated with salt (NaCl) (150g/decimal), potasium permanganate (5g/decimal) along with lime (125 kg/ha). After stocking fish were fed using floating nursery feed containing 32%, protein and 7% lipid at the rate of 10-2% for shing and magur nursing, floating oil coated grower feed (27% protein and 6% lipid) at the rate of 6-2% for shing and magur grow out and prawn grower (30% protein and 7% lipid) at the rate of 6-2.5% of estimated fish and prawn biomass. At least 10% of stocked catfish and galda were sampled fortnightly using cast net. Physico-chemical parameters of the experimental ghers water were monitored at weekly. After six months of culture the highest growth performance (47.0 g) and survival (19.94%) for shing obtained from T3. Whereas the average growth of shing was recorded 37.02 and 41.14g; growth of magur 99.21g and 99.51g and growth of galda 69.74 and 70.19 for Treatment T1 and T2 respectively. Except ammonia and iron content the other observed parameters of ghers water found congenial for fish health. The value of Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) was 1.4 that seems to be profitable and feasible of this polyculture practice.

The Imidacloprid insecticide, Gaucho 70 WS at 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 and 5.5 g/kg seed was used as seed treatment and monocrotophos 40 WSC at 1120 ml/ha was applied as foliar spray on CB9 cotton cultivar to suppress aphid, whitefly and thrips, and impact on their natural enemies during 2008-2011 at the Regional Cotton Research Station, Dinajpur, Bangladesh. The activity of natural enemies, such as ladybird beetle, lacewing, syrphid, and spider population on the sucking pests attacking cotton cultivar CB9 and yield of cotton were recorded. Imidacloprid significantly reduced aphid, whitefly, and thrips population on cotton crops compared to untreated control or foliar spray of monocrotophos 40 WSC at 1120 ml/ha. Ladybird beetles, lacewings, syrphids, and spiders were abundant in the field but their population decreased in the treated plots compared to untreated control. The CB9 cotton cultivar produced significantly higher yield (1.73 t/ha) with a benefit cost ratio 12.47 when seeds were treated with Imidacloprid at 5.5 g/kg fuzzy seed. This study indicated that Imidacloprid (Gaucho 70 WS) used as a seed treatment may be suggested to the cotton growers for controlling sucking pests. Bangladesh J. Agril. Rice production and processing over the years has been on an increase with more small holders entering the business. This study on profitability of processing and marketing of small scale rice processors had as objective to analyse the profitability levels of rice processing and marketing by small scale processors, determine the value added to the commodity at each stage and also identify the constraints faced by these processors. The study used primary data collected using well-structured questionnaire from millers only, miller traders for white/parboiled rice through a multistage sampling technique. Results showed that the net processing income (3,151,201), value added (8,147,456) and efficiency (138) for miller-traders of white rice was highest, followed by miller-traders for parboiled rice and lastly millers only. Results further showed that millers only had Benefit/cost ratio of 0.4 indicating that milling only is not profitable due to small quantities milled, and high fixed cost. Miller-traders for parboiled rice had a benefit/cost ratio of 2.3 implying that their venture is most profitable. Based on the results, it was recommended that millers only should purchase large quantities of paddy to enable them reduce the overhead cost. Also the services of parboilers should reflect in the sales price of parboiled rice so that the parboiling services can be paid for.

The research was conducted at Beltari Sandhikharka-10, Arghakhanchi district to study about the effect of various doses of boron on growth and yield attributing characters of cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) during off-season from February to June in 2020. Five treatments; B0 (control/no application), B1: 2kg/ha, B2: 4kg/ha, B3: 6kg/ha, B4: 8kg/ha which are the different doses of boron application were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 4 replications. The growth parameters like plant height, number of leaves per plant leaf length and leaf breadth of largest leaf were recorded multiple times with 15 days interval. Days to curd initiation and Days from curd initiation to harvest were recorded by regular field observation. The yield parameters; curd weight with leaves, Marketable curd weight, average curd yield, incidence of hollowing were recorded during harvest. The economics from application of boron doses in cauliflower production was obtained in terms of cost of cultivation, gross returns, net returns, and benefit cost ratio. The result showed that the growth and yield attributing characters of cauliflower were significantly affected by application of boron in which the value of these parameters was found significantly higher in B1 followed by other treatments. The average curd yield of cauliflower in B1 was found to be 12.39 mt/ha which was 48.92% higher than that of B0 with curd yield 8.32 mt/ha. Similarly, the net return was found significantly the highest in B1 and the lowest in B0. The result showed that application of boron in the range of 2-4 kg/ha is preferred to control and higher doses in respect of both productivity and economics.
