Abstract The mutual funds’ returns, inter alia, are dependent on fund managers’ performance. This makes human capital efficiency very central for consistent risk-adjusted performance. The persistence in performance becomes more critical during periods of high turbulence, like the one we are experiencing amidst the outbreak of Covid-19. In this research, we attempt to evaluate the performance of equity funds in massively impacted Latin American countries. These equity funds, with 95% of their investment in the infected region, are ranked as per their human capital efficiency using 2019 as the base year. Our findings demonstrate that funds with higher human capital efficiency significantly outperform their counterparts that rank lower on human capital efficiency. These findings remained consistent for the sub-periods that we specify to map the evolution of Covid-19. We conclude that equity funds should enhance their human capital efficiency to endure resilience amid macroeconomic shocks.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of intellectual capital (IC) on the reputation and performance of Italian companies. Design/methodology/approach The paper exploits a unique data set of 452 non-listed companies that obtained a reputational assessment from the Italian Competition Authority (ICA). To test the hypotheses, this study implemented several regression analyses. Findings Results support the argument that human capital efficiency is a key driver of corporate reputation. Findings also reveal that companies, which obtained reputational rating under ICA scrutiny, show a positive relationship between IC elements and various measures of financial performance. Research limitations/implications The study focuses on a single country; it is not free from the imprecisions of Pulic’s VAIC model. Practical implications This paper recommends companies that are interested to achieve a robust reputation should consider the human capital as a strategic intangible asset. Second, the results suggest that companies with an ICA reputational rating are able to leverage their intangibles to potentiate performance and competitiveness. Originality/value This is the first empirical investigation on the contribution of IC in generating value for corporate reputation. Additionally, the study contributes to the literature on the link between IC and performance by examining a sample of firms not yet explored in prior research.

Development across the globe has been an agenda many citizens of the world champion irrespective of the area, sector or discipline within which it is being advocated. Politically, socially, and in the world of economics, mutual fund has gained significance within country’s economic environment. The phenomenal growth in the financial market of mutual funds can be attributed to the increase in the various financial schemes available, improvement in fund mobilization, as well as the growth of investments in the country. We examined the impact of macroeconomic variables on mutual fund performance of all mutual fund companies in Ghana over the period of 2008 to 2016. We performed correlation analysis, hence examined the co-movement of the returns from the selected funds with the key macroeconomic variables. We find macroeconomics variables positively affect the returns of funds. The effect comes by the amount of money available for investments. We further find exchange rate as the strongest macroeconomic variable affects the performance of mutual funds in Ghana. We established that Ghana receives a significant amount of foreign portfolio investment (FPI), where investors in other countries bring in their money to make investment on our financial markets. Our results provide evidence for fund managers on approach in dealing with macroeconomic conditions and its volatilities.

This study investigates the impact of asset allocation on the net flow of fixed income funds in the Brazilian market, by exploiting the exogenous variation in the risk perception of bank liabilities (CDs) caused by the financial turmoil that followed Lehman Brothers’ demise in September 2008. The central hypothesis is that the exposure to assets negatively affected by the crisis impacts negatively the fund’s net flow. We find that, for mutual funds, the larger proportion of assets negatively affected by the crisis the larger the net outflow of resources, indicating that shareholders monitor asset allocation and exert disciplining power on fund managers by withdrawing their resources. In exclusive (fundos exclusivos, i.e., funds with a single shareholder), for which the shareholder is presumed to exert more influence on asset reallocation, we find no significant relationship between the exposure to assets negatively affected by the crisis and net flows.

- This article adds new insights into the relationship between the founders' human capital and the survival prospects of start-up businesses. The impact of founders' human capital on firm survival is controversial. On the one hand, more experienced and skilled individuals are likely to create start-up businesses with a high chance of survival; on the other hand, their opportunity costs to run the firm may be high given the potential returns for investing their efforts in alternative employment opportunities. Analysing a sample of 179 Italian start-up companies created during 1995-early 2000 and operating in the ICT services markets, this study provides evidence that, in intense industry crises (early 2000-2003), highly work-experienced entrepreneurs may pursue an exit strategy, highlighting the importance of distinguishing between different types of work experience and different exit routes. In particular, founding teams with highly specific work experience show higher probability of following the M&A route, while a higher level of generic work experience is more conducive to closure. The performance of banks has been widely researched using accounting ratios, Tobin�s Q and market returns and less emphasis has been given to productivity measures. The productivity growth of banks is captured through Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI). The study then investigates the impact of intellectual capital on the productivity of banks in Pakistan. Value-added The intellectual Coefficient (VAIC) approach is employed to examine the intellectual capital of banks. Data is obtained from annual reports of 20 banks listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange for 10 years (2007-2016). The panel corrected standard error approach is used for estimating the panel regression model. The findings provide evidence that the VAIC, human capital efficiency (HCE) and structural capital efficiency (SCE) has a positive impact on productivity growth (MPI). On the other hand, capital employed efficiency (CEE) has no significant impact on productivity growth. The VAIC approach may be useful for the banks and policymakers in a knowledge economy to integrate the intellectual capital in the decision-making process. Our results also suggest that banks in Pakistan shall increase spending on intellectual capital particularly on human capital and structural capital to elevate the intellectual capital of banks and subsequently get benefits in terms of increased productivity Keywords: Intellectual capital; Value added intellectual coefficient (VAIC); Malmquist productivity Index; Pakistan banking sector

This study examines the effect of investment fund managers' characteristics in the form of tenure, and mutual fund characteristics with proxy turnover portfolios, market timing and stock selectivity on the performance of stock mutual funds. The research sample is 27 stock mutual funds in Indonesia that were active from 2013 to 2017. On the analysis of the relationships between the characteristics of investment managers and mutual funds characteristics on the performance of stock mutual funds, a series of OLS regressions were run. The panel data regression was included based on using the Eviews. All of the above were aimed at achieving portfolio optimization and realizing the maximization of the interests for fund management companies and investors. The main findings are as follows. Tenure does not affect the performance of stock mutual funds during the years 2013 to 2017, but if divided into 2 quadrants of tenure, namely tenure over 19 years and tenure under 19 years of work, the result is that tenure over 19 years has a positive effect on the performance of stock mutual funds, but tenure brought 19 years has no effect on the performance of equity funds, whereas mutual funds characteristics, which are proxied by portfolio turnover, market timing and stock selectivity, have a significant positive effect on the performance of equity funds in Indonesia. The primary limitation in the scope is the sample, because stock mutual funds that publish consistently Financial statements between 2013 and 2017 are few in number. These findings have important implications for fund management companies as input material that the investment strategy of the investment management team affects the performance of equity funds compared to the characteristics of investment managers with proxies for years of service. This paper proposes a new perspective to evaluate the relationship between the fund manager and mutual funds characteristicsanddivide 2 groups of working years, and calculate them with non-linear models.

Intellectual capital (IC) has gained recognition in enhancing the firms’ value and gain competitive advantage in the developed world. Thus, it is imperative for all stakeholders to have an understanding of its impact on firms’ profitability. The present study aims to analyse the impact of intellectual capital on firms’ profitability of Indian pharmaceutical companies listed in National Stock Exchange (NSE-500) for the time period of 10 years (i.e. 2009–2018). The paper has used modified version of Pulic’s Value Added Intellectual Coefficient, i.e., M-VAIC as a proxy to measure intellectual capital and firms’ profitability as represented by ROA, ROE and EBITDA. In line to analyse the effectiveness, a balanced panel data regression technique has been used. The results of the paper indicate a significant relationship between intellectual capital and firms’ profitability. Also, it is found that human capital, relational capital and physical capital have a significant role in increasing the profitability of the firm. The analysis would help the administration and management of pharmaceutical companies in the composition and organization of intellectual capital, stakeholders in the decisions related to investment and financial specialist for enhancing intellectual capital efficiency and value creation for the firm. Human capital is found to be having a positively significant impact on firms’ profitability; their inclusion and management are suggested for the companies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore and compare the extent of intellectual capital (IC) and its four components in high-tech and non-high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in China’s manufacturing sector, and to examine the relationship between IC and the performance of high-tech and non-high-tech SMEs. Design/methodology/approach The study uses the data of 116 high-tech SMEs and 380 non-high-tech SMEs listed on the Shenzhen stock exchanges during 2012–2016. The modified value added intellectual coefficient (MVAIC) model is used incorporating four components, namely, capital employed, human capital, structural capital and relational capital. Finally, multiple regression analysis is utilized to test the proposed research hypotheses. Findings The findings of this paper reveal that there is significant difference in MVAIC between high-tech and non-high-tech SMEs. The results further indicate a positive relationship between IC and financial performance of high-tech and non-high-tech SMEs. Specifically, IC is positively associated with firms’ earnings, profitability and operating efficiency. Additionally, capital employed efficiency, human capital efficiency and structural capital efficiency are found to be the most influential value drivers for the performance of two types of SMEs while relational capital efficiency possesses less importance. Practical implications This paper will provide a valuable framework for executives, managers and policy makers in managing IC within the Chinese context. Originality/value To the best knowledge of the authors, this is the first empirical study that has been conducted on high-tech and non-high-tech SMEs in the manufacturing sector in China.
