Depth migration with the near surface: A case study for mineral exploration in China

Seismic reflection data used in mineral exploration are usually of poor quality because of rough topography and small-scale heterogeneities. However, there is an increasing demand for accurate imaging processes that can obtain such data. Here, we have developed a practical rugged depth migration method based on the finite-difference one-way wave equation. It can be used to improve imaging quality when faced with rough topography and complex geologic features. First, synthetic data are used to illustrate the errors and problems that cause unsatisfactory imaging results. This is usually because no consideration is given to rough topography during conventional processing procedures. To address this, a depth migration method that begins with the rugged topography is introduced. It can be used to produce better images. Real data from mineral exploration activities in Fujian, China, are then used to demonstrate the practical use of this method. We also compare two computational processes: The first corrects the data back to the original surface and then builds a velocity model before conducting rugged depth migration; the second process involves performing rugged depth migration on processed data featuring a smoothed surface following short-wavelength static correction and residual correction. The imaging results indicate that the section obtained from the processed data has better quality. They also indicate that the imaging quality of the original surface is affected by the built velocity model, which cannot include near-surface and small-scale structures.

Refraction methods are often applied to model and image near-surface velocity structures. However, near-surface imaging is very challenging, and no single method can resolve all of the land seismic problems across the world. In addition, deep interfaces are difficult to image from land reflection data due to the associated low signal-to-noise ratio. Following previous research, we have developed a refraction wavefield migration method for imaging shallow and deep interfaces via interferometry. Our method includes two steps: converting refractions into virtual reflection gathers and then applying a prestack depth migration method to produce interface images from the virtual reflection gathers. With a regular recording offset of approximately 3 km, this approach produces an image of a shallow interface within the top 1 km. If the recording offset is very long, the refractions may follow a deep path, and the result may reveal a deep interface. We determine several factors that affect the imaging results using synthetics. We also apply the novel method to one data set with regular recording offsets and another with far offsets; both cases produce sharp images, which are further verified by conventional reflection imaging. This method can be applied as a promising imaging tool when handling practical cases involving data with excessively weak or missing reflections but available refractions.

Seismic reflection data contain information on small‐scale impedance variations and a smooth reference velocity model. Given a reference velocity model, the reflectors can be obtained by linearized migration‐inversion. If the reference velocity is incorrect, the reflectors obtained by inverting different subsets of the data will be incoherent. We propose to use the coherency of these images to invert for the background velocity distribution. We have developed a two‐step iterative inversion method in which we separate the retrieval of small‐scale variations of the seismic velocity from the longer‐period reference velocity model. Given an initial background velocity model, we use a waveform misfit‐functional for the inversion of small‐scale velocity variations. For this linear step we use the linearized migration‐inversion method based on ray theory that we have recently developed with Lambaré and Virieux. The reference velocity model is then updated by a Monte Carlo inversion method. For the nonlinear inversion of the velocity background, we introduce an objective functional that measures the coherency of the short wavelength components obtained by inverting different common shot gathers at the same locations. The nonlinear functional is calculated directly in migrated data space to avoid expensive numerical forward modeling by finite differences or ray theory. Our method is somewhat similar to an iterative migration velocity analysis, but we do an automatic search for relatively large‐scale 1-D reference velocity models. We apply the nonlinear inversion method to a marine data set from the North Sea and also show that nonlinear inversion can be applied to realistic scale data sets to obtain a laterally heterogeneous velocity model with a reasonable amount of computer time.

Through the use of iterative turning‐ray tomography followed by wave‐equation datuming (or tomo‐datuming) and prestack depth migration, we generate accurate prestack images of seismic data in overthrust areas containing both highly variable near‐surface velocities and rough topography. In tomo‐datuming, we downward continue shot records from the topography to a horizontal datum using velocities estimated from tomography. Turning‐ray tomography often provides a more accurate near‐surface velocity model than that from refraction statics. The main advantage of tomo‐datuming over tomo‐statics (tomography plus static corrections) or refraction statics is that instead of applying a vertical time‐shift to the data, tomo‐datuming propagates the recorded wavefield to the new datum. We find that tomo‐datuming better reconstructs diffractions and reflections, subsequently providing better images after migration. In the datuming process, we use a recursive finite‐difference (FD) scheme to extrapolate wavefield without applying the imaging condition, such that lateral velocity variations can be handled properly and approximations in traveltime calculations associated with the raypath distortions near the surface for migration are avoided. We follow the downward continuation step with a conventional Kirchhoff prestack depth migration. This results in better images than those migrated from the topography using the conventional Kirchhoff method with traveltime calculation in the complicated near surface. Since FD datuming is only applied to the shallow part of the section, its cost is much less than the whole volume FD migration. This is attractive because (1) prestack depth migration usually is used iteratively to build a velocity model, so both efficiency and accuracy are important factors to be considered; and (2) tomo‐datuming can improve the signal‐to‐noise (S/N) ratio of prestack gathers, leading to more accurate migration velocity analysis and better images after depth migration. Case studies with synthetic and field data examples show that tomo‐datuming is especially helpful when strong lateral velocity variations are present below the topography.

The objective of prestack depth migration is to position reflectors at their correct subsurface locations. However, migration methods often also generate artifacts along with physical reflectors, which hamper interpretation. These spurious reflectors often appear at different spatial locations in the image depending on which migration method is used. Therefore, we have devised a postimaging filter that combines two imaging conditions to preserve their similarities and to attenuate their differences. The imaging filter is based on combining the two constituent images and their envelopes that were obtained from the complex vertical traces of the images. We have used the method to combine two images resulting from different migration schemes, which produce dissimilar artifacts: a conventional migration method (equivalent to reverse time migration) and a deconvolution-based imaging method. We show how this combination may be exploited to attenuate migration artifacts in a final image. A synthetic model containing a syncline and stochastically generated small-scale heterogeneities in the velocity and density distributions was used for the numerical example. We compared the images in detail at two locations where spurious events arose and also at a true reflector. We found that the combined imaging condition has significantly fewer artifacts than either constituent image individually.

Because conventional time‐migration algorithms are founded on the implicit assumption of locally lateral homogeneity, they leave events mispositioned when overburden velocity varies laterally. The ray‐theoretical depth migration procedure of Hubral often can provide adequate first‐order corrections for such position errors. Complex geologic structure, however, can so severely distort wavefronts that resulting time‐migrated sections may be barely interpretable and thus not readily correctable. A more accurate, wave‐theoretical approach to depth migration then becomes essential to image the subsurface properly. This approach, which transforms an unmigrated time section directly into migrated depth, more completely honors the wave equation for a medium in which variations in interval velocity and details of structural shape govern wave propagation. Where geologic structure is complicated, however, we usually lack an accurate velocity model. It is important, therefore, to understand the sensitivity of depth migration to velocity errors and, in particular, to assess whether it is justified to go to the added effort of doing depth migration. We show a synthetic data example in which the wave‐theoretical approach to depth migration properly images deep reflections that are poorly resolved and left distorted by either time migration or ray‐theoretical depth migration. These imaging results are, moreover, surprisingly insensitive to errors introduced into the velocity model. Application to one field data example demonstrates the superior treatment of amplitude and waveform by wave‐theoretical depth migration. In a second data example, deep reflections are so influenced by anomalous overburden structure that the only valid alternative to performing wave‐theoretical depth migration is simply to convert the unmigrated data to depth. When the overburden is laterally variable, conventional time migration of unstacked data can be as destructive to steeply dipping reflections as is CDP stacking prior to migration. A schematic example illustrates that when migration of unstacked data is judged necessary, it should normally be performed as a depth migration.

Seismic imaging of complex structures from the western Canadian Foothills can be achieved by applying the closely coupled processes of velocity analysis and depth migration. For the purposes of defining these structures in the Shaw Basing area of western Alberta, we performed a series of tests on both synthetic and real data to find optimum imaging procedures for handling large topographic relief, near‐surface velocity variations, and the complex structural geology of steeply dipping formations. To better understand the seismic processing problems, we constructed a typical foothills geological model that included thrust faults and duplex structures, computed the model responses, and then compared the performance of different migration algorithms, including the explicit finite difference (f-x) and Kirchhoff integral methods. When the correct velocity was used in the migration tests, the f-x method was the most effective in migration from topography. In cases where the velocity model was not assumed known, we determined a macrovelocity model by performing migration/velocity analysis by using smiles and frowns in common image gathers and by using depth‐focusing analysis. In applying depth imaging to the seismic survey from the Shaw Basing area, we found that imaging problems were caused partly by near‐surface velocity problems, which were not anticipated in the modeling study. Several comparisons of different migration approaches for these data indicated that prestack depth migration from topography provided the best imaging results when near‐surface velocity information was incorporated. Through iterative and interpretive migration/velocity analysis, we built a macrovelocity model for the final prestack depth migration.

Seismic imaging in foothills areas is challenging because of the complexity of the near-surface and subsurface structures. Single seismic surveys often are not adequate in a foothill-exploration area, and multiple phases with different acquisition designs within the same block are required over time to get desired sampling in space and azimuths for optimizing noise attenuation, velocity estimation, and migration. This is partly because of economic concerns, and it is partly because technology is progressing over time, creating the need for unified criteria in processing workflows and parameters at different blocks in a study area. Each block is defined as a function of not only location but also the acquisition and processing phase. An innovative idea for complex foothills seismic imaging is presented to solve a matrix of blocks and tasks. For each task, such as near-surface velocity estimation and static corrections, signal processing, prestack time migration, velocity-model building, and prestack depth migration, one or two best service companies are selected to work on all blocks. We have implemented streamlined processing efficiently so that Task-1 to Task-n progressed with good coordination. Application of this innovative approach to a mega-project containing 16 3D surveys covering more than [Formula: see text] in the Kelasu foothills, northwestern China, has demonstrated that this innovative approach is a current best practice in complex foothills imaging. To date, this is the largest foothills imaging project in the world. The case study in Kelasu successfully has delivered near-surface velocity models using first arrivals picked up to 3500 m offset for static corrections and 9000 m offset for prestack depth migration from topography. Most importantly, the present megaproject is a merge of several 3D surveys, with the merge performed in a coordinated, systematic fashion in contrast to most land megaprojects. The benefits of this approach and the strategies used in processing data from the various subsurveys are significant. The main achievement from the case study is that the depth images, after the application of the near-surface velocity model estimated from the megasurveys, are more continuous and geologically plausible, leading to more accurate seismic interpretation.

Seismic reflection is a proven and effective method commonly used during the exploration of deep mineral deposits in Fujian, China. In seismic data processing, rugged depth migration based on wave-equation migration can play a key role in handling surface fluctuations and complex underground structures. Because wave-equation migration in the shot domain cannot output offset-domain common-image gathers in a straightforward way, the use of traditional tools for updating the velocity model and improving image quality can be quite challenging. To overcome this problem, we employed the attribute migration method. This worked by sorting the migrated stack results for every single-shot gather into the offset gathers. The value of the offset that corresponded to each image point was obtained from the ratio of the original migration results to the offset-modulated shot-data migration results. A Gaussian function was proposed to map every image point to a certain range of offsets. This helped improve the signal-to-noise ratio, which was especially important in handing low quality seismic data obtained during mineral exploration. Residual velocity analysis was applied to these gathers to update the velocity model and improve image quality. The offset-domain common-image gathers were also used directly for real mineral exploration seismic data with rugged depth migration. After several iterations of migration and updating the velocity, the proposed procedure achieved an image quality better than the one obtained with the initial velocity model. The results can help with the interpretation of thrust faults and deep deposit exploration.

Imaging in deep-water environments poses a specific set of challenges, both in data preconditioning and velocity model building. These challenges include scattered, complex 3D multiples, aliased noise, and low-velocity shallow anomalies associated with channel fills and gas hydrates. We describe an approach to tackling such problems for data from deep water off the east coast of India, concentrating our attention on iterative velocity model building, and more specifically the resolution of near-surface and other velocity anomalies. In the region under investigation, the velocity field is complicated by narrow buried canyons ([Formula: see text] wide) filled with low-velocity sediments, which give rise to severe pull-down effects; possible free-gas accumulation below an extensive gas-hydrate cap, causing dimming of the image below (perhaps as a result of absorption); and thin-channel bodies with low-velocity fill. Hybrid gridded tomography using a conjugate gradient solver (with [Formula: see text] vertical cell size) was applied to resolve small-scale velocity anomalies (with thicknesses of about [Formula: see text]). Manual picking of narrow-channel features was used to define bodies too small for the tomography to resolve. Prestack depth migration, using a velocity model built with a combination of these techniques, could resolve pull-down and other image distortion effects in the final image. The resulting velocity field shows high-resolution detail useful in identifying anomalous geobodies of potential exploration interest.

This paper presents a method for multi-point vibration location near-surface. Unlike traditional source location technologies, it is not using travel times of seismic waves for positioning calculation, but according to the entire seismic data record, using the wave equation migration method to calculate the source location. Similar to exploration seismic, the records from a survey line within a certain period of time are data volumes with dimensions of time and ground coordinates. Based on the data, combined with surface seismic wave propagation characteristics, by using the improved seismic depth migration algorithm, the vibration energy will return to the starting position where exactly the source location is. The method can solve the problem of location calculation error by using traditional method when several vibration at the same time or continuous vibration occurs at some point.
