A fourth digital revolution of applied geophysics is upon us — the “big data” era. Three prior digital revolutions in the past 50 years have provided new and more powerful tools, expanded markets, and redefined what it takes to be a successful applied geophysicist. The present digital revolution can do the same and be a benefit to the profession. To meet this challenge, SEG is adapting its business, products, and services.

Sociology is a discipline inevitably based on interpretative categories of social reality derived from a specific historical phase. In a period that is increasingly defined as a new era or digital society, can sociological knowledge not be upset by this overload of changes of every kind and nature? And can these changes not involve all identity components of sociology, namely theory, research, and the usability of its knowledge? Given this, it seems rather evident that this volume is the sign of the times and testify the variety and flexibility of digital methods. The author limits to dealing schematically with two methodological components that are constitutive of the digital revolution: the shift from the traditional and glorious ethnography to the new and emerging netnography, especially as regards the qualitative side, and, on the more properly quantitative side, the overwhelming and boundless spread of big data. A brief and selective description of these “transitions” will be complemented by a thoughtful evaluation of their potential for the future in the peculiar field of inquiry.

Our beautiful, new digital world has a come at a price, which we are paying by relinquishing our personal data–while we are shopping, driving our cars, and chatting and surfing on the Internet. However, the intelligent algorithms needed to process this data pose a threat to freedom in our society. They analyse and evaluate us, while predicting our behaviour. Big data and data mining are the business models of the future. What does all this mean for politics, the economy, journalism and political communication? Do we have to defend basic human rights and human dignity against the digital revolution? Do we need new laws and a code of ethics for algorithms? And how will politics, the media and democracy function under these new conditions? In this book, experts from a variety of academic fields, journalism and politics discuss these questions in terms of the future and society. Laszlo Solymar’s book is quite unique in the sense that it is the only one that covers all the major developments in the history of telecommunications for the past 4,000 years, like fire signals, the mechanical telegraph, the electrical telegraph, telephony, optical fibres, fax, satellites, mobile phones, the Internet, the digital revolution, the role of computers, and also some long-forgotten technologies like news broadcasting by a devoted telephone network. It tells the technical aspects of the story but also how it affects people and society; e.g.it discusses the effect of the electric telegraph on war and diplomacy, how thanks to the telegraph Kitchener could preserve the Cairo-to-Cape Town red band for the British Empire, or more recent events like the effect of deregulation upon the monopoly of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T). A number of anecdotes are told, e.g. how one murderer was caught by telegraphy when he arrived at Paddington Station and how another murderer was caught by wireless telegraphy when tried to escape by boat from Britain to Canada. The last chapter is concerned with the future: how the future was envisaged in the past and how we imagine the future of telecommunications now.

In a brief but ambitious Journal of Macromarketing commentary, Lusch (2017) offered a set of observations about the “evolution of economic exchange systems.” His first observation states that over the past 40,000 years, humans have routinely engaged in “exchange with strangers.” Our research complements Lusch’s retrospective commentary by taking a prospective look at how the digital revolution alters the degree to which humans transact with strangers. We specifically focus on the recent emergence of the sharing economy by theoretically and empirically examining how closely this new form of economic exchange conforms with Lusch’s observation. We conclude that, despite its promise of bridging divides between friends and strangers, our new digital world is still replete with transactions with strangers, and may be more similar to our old world than commonly recognized. Thus, transacting with strangers appears to be endemic to not just our past but also our future. We discuss the implications of transacting with strangers in a digital world for the future of macromarketing thought.

AbstractThe IUPAC centenary in 2019 is fast approaching, and this will naturally lead people to look back at the significant achievements of the organisation and its dedicated volunteers over the past one hundred years. Equally important, however, will be the need to look forward to the roles for IUPAC in its second century. This special issue of Chemistry International (CI) could well feature in that assessment, as technology in the digital age, and particularly the data that technology produces, will clearly be an essential tool for the future of chemistry as a discipline.

Big Data-wow! Look at the size of it! People are dazzled easily and impressed by the amount of data legions of developers can produce and moreover how they store it. But one should ask why so much data is being collected. Part of the answer is simple in light of scientific projects but why is there so much data on us? Such questions prompt this chapter on the philosophy of Big Data. After some background on definitions, origins and contemporary applications, the main discussion begins with thinking about Big Data from a complexity standpoint. Big Data is turned into knowledge but knowledge is extrapolated from the past and used to manage the future. Yet it is questionable whether humans have the capacity to manage contemporary technological and social complexity evidenced by our world in crisis and possibly on the brink of extinction. We are at the center of observation from which Big Data emerges, the overall human project being not only to create an artificial brain with an attendant mind but a society that might be able to survive what “natural” humans cannot.
