Sociology is a discipline inevitably based on interpretative categories of social reality derived from a specific historical phase. In a period that is increasingly defined as a new era or digital society, can sociological knowledge not be upset by this overload of changes of every kind and nature? And can these changes not involve all identity components of sociology, namely theory, research, and the usability of its knowledge? Given this, it seems rather evident that this volume is the sign of the times and testify the variety and flexibility of digital methods. The author limits to dealing schematically with two methodological components that are constitutive of the digital revolution: the shift from the traditional and glorious ethnography to the new and emerging netnography, especially as regards the qualitative side, and, on the more properly quantitative side, the overwhelming and boundless spread of big data. A brief and selective description of these “transitions” will be complemented by a thoughtful evaluation of their potential for the future in the peculiar field of inquiry.

SynopsisThe paper is in the nature of a summary of the authors' book “Surplus in British Life Assurance—Actuarial Control over its Emergence and Distribution during 200 Years”. Copies may be purchased direct from the Institute of Actuaries (price 17s. 6d.). Members and Students of the Faculty may obtain a copy for personal use at the reduced price of 11s. post free. It begins with a survey of the principal factors that have influenced the development of theory and practice in regard to surplus throughout the years. It describes the manner in which surplus first arose in scientific life assurance, and traces how this and other historical developments have had an important effect both in the early days and later as a valid standard of equity was gradually evolved. At the same time the influence of long-dated contracts and of the expectations of the public has been a stabilising factor in spite of rapid changes in the economic and social scene.The characteristics of the nineteenth-century image of equity are described, and the history of the twentieth century in regard to surplus is seen as one of attempts to preserve that image through sharp and contrasting vicissitudes. This idea is explored in some detail for both ordinary and industrial life business.The problems of the present day are reviewed one by one and the paper touches on such matters as economic inflation, the public demand for pension schemes, the introduction of computers and data-processing devices and the prospect of Britain joining the Common Market. Against this background, various modern concepts of equity are contrasted and brief reference is made to matching, immunisation and gearing. Equity in with-profit pension schemes and systems of variable policies are also considered.This general survey leads the authors in the end to ask some critical questions about the performance of the profession throughout its history. These questions relate to the success or otherwise of actuaries in foreseeing the future, in attaining equity and in progressing with the times. The authors attempt to answer them and are able to end on a cheerful note as regards past achievements and to express great hopes for the future, which may well bring a new era for the profession.

Convinced that art should be an expression of life representing the vitality of the times, four architecture students in Dresden joined together to found Die Brücke [The Bridge] in 1905. The name, suggested by one of their founding members, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, reflected their intention to provide a bridge between the art of previous generations and that of the new era of the twentieth century. As the initiator of Die Brücke and its chief spokesman, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner had the audacious idea of renewing German art. He was joined by Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, fellow students studying at Dresden’s Technische Hochschule [Dresden Technical Institute]. In preceding years, both Kirchner, who had taken leave of absence to study art, and Bleyl had been working on woodcuts influenced heavily by the earlier Jugendstil. While Bleyl remained interested in the illusion of space, Kirchner had begun to simplify his style to include greater planarity, with jagged lines providing delineation and contour, creating a two-dimensional effect that was already indicative of his signature stylistic innovations of the future.

Our beautiful, new digital world has a come at a price, which we are paying by relinquishing our personal data–while we are shopping, driving our cars, and chatting and surfing on the Internet. However, the intelligent algorithms needed to process this data pose a threat to freedom in our society. They analyse and evaluate us, while predicting our behaviour. Big data and data mining are the business models of the future. What does all this mean for politics, the economy, journalism and political communication? Do we have to defend basic human rights and human dignity against the digital revolution? Do we need new laws and a code of ethics for algorithms? Businesses are getting smarter with analytics. Tax agencies across the globe are increasingly relying on digital methods to mobilize revenue. This has resulted in an unprecedented amount of citizens’ Data flowing between systems, businesses enterprises, institutions, and governments. This Data has the potential to help increase revenue collections through targeted compliance initiatives, expanding the tax base, and improving overall operational efficiency. Tax administrations, therefore have an opportunity to deliver value in this new era of digital tax by embracing enterprise initiatives and transformations that facilitate enhanced Data utilization. To enhance the use of Data analytics there is a need for a shift in mind-set around how Data is managed and analyzed. Kenya Revenue Authority implemented a transformation agenda titled ‘Towards being an insight driven Tax Authority’, aimed at drastically enhancing the Authority’s performance in a rapidly changing environment. This would see the enterprise leverage on Data warehousing, business intelligence and advanced analytical skills and tools to transform Data management and utilization. To optimize the value of analytics there has been initiatives towards integrating with big Data sources including Data sourced from third parties. This transformation can only happen if there is a deliberate initiative to build Data literacy including skills in Data mining, modelling, artificial intelligence; among others. This paper aims at exploring how a government revenue mobilization authority is transforming and is leveraging on its digital systems, big Data, and advanced analytics to enhance revenue mobilization for the government.

AbstractThe 5-decade old ISYA program is evaluated in the context of the experience gathered in the field: 41 schools organized in 27 countries with a total of more than 1400 students to date. In the new era of fast internet connectivity, social media, virtual networks, big data and machine learning, the value of face-to-face graduate schools for regions with limited up-to-date astrophysics research is presented, together with the plan to develop the ISYA program into the next decade.

Radiomics is a science that investigates a large number of features from medical images using data-characterisation algorithms, with the aim to analyse disease characteristics that are indistinguishable to the naked eye. Radiogenomics attempts to establish and examine the relationship between tumour genomic characteristics and their radiologic appearance. Although there is certainly a lot to learn from these relationships, one could ask the question: what is the practical significance of radiogenomic discoveries? This increasing interest in such applications inevitably raises numerous legal and ethical questions. In an environment such as the technology field, which changes quickly and unpredictably, regulations need to be timely in order to be relevant.  In this paper, issues that must be solved to make the future applications of this innovative technology safe and useful are analysed.

This paper will first briefly map out the shift from disciplinary to control societies (what I call designer capitalism, the idea of control comes from Gilles Deleuze) in relation to surveillance and mediation of life through screen cultures. The paper then shifts to the issues of digitalization in relation to big data that have the danger of continuing to close off life as zoë, that is life that is creative rather than captured via attention technologies through marketing techniques and surveillance. The last part of this paper then develops the way artists are able to resist the big data archive by turning the data in on itself to offer viewers and participants a glimpse of the current state of manipulating desire and maintaining copy right in order to keep the future closed rather than being potentially open.

The paper is titled, "Becoming True Learners in a New Era of Globalization." This title is important for two reasons. First, internal cause, that is the tendency in society where people only attach importance to degree, certificate or diploma, not science or competence. Second, external cause, that is arising from the digital revolution that gave rise to global competition, where everyone was expected to become true learners. Otherwise, he will be marginalized, as a human being, which according to Michael Fullan, is not feasible, morally, socially, and economically. True learners, as James R. Davis and Adelaide B. Davis point out, refer to people who love new things, new thinking, and new skills. He learned not only to know (learning toknow), but more than that to think (learning to think) and solve (learning to solve) the problem. Human learners try to learn and develop knowledge not only from college, formal learning, and from the text book, but from experiences and from the real world or reality of life. True learners have 5 (five) prominent characters. First, they have a high curiosity that makes them passionate and studying diligently. Second, they like to share knowledge and experience to others. Third, they like to develop and expand knowledge. Fourth, they have contributions to the progress of culture, civilization, and humanity. Fifth, they have a humbleattitude and the open to thoughts of others. The new century, globalization, requires a new man, a true learner.
