Khangay neotectonic uplift is a large block of the earth’s crust confined to the area between two sublatitudinal deep faults (Bulnay and Goby-Altay). They are active faults accommodating main compression stresses in contract to the extension existed in the other area of the Khangay uplift. In contrast to continental rift zones of Khangay it is the region of compression. Low-enthalpy thermal waters (30-50°C) of HCO3-Na and HCO3-SO4-Na types with nitrogen as a dominant associated gas discharge on the southern continental margin of the Russian Far East and traditionally are of great importance for recreation and balneology facilities. All studied thermal waters have meteoric origin and relate to Palaeocene granite intrusions. Based on the chemical characteristics and isotopic composition, thermal waters are divided onto “immature” thermal waters with a short residence time (3H=1.3±0.2TU), and “mature” thermal waters (3H=0.3±0.2TU) originated as a result of a longer evolution history (more than 60 years). The chemical composition of waters is largely determined by water-rock interactions, residence time and the local geothermal gradient.


More than 1000 precise analyses of trace elements in basic and ultrabasic rocks of the Mid-Indian Ocean Ridge have been used for geochemical comparison with similar data for the continents, islands and chondrites. We can draw a preliminary conclusion that the transport of trace elements in the oceanic segment of the Earth was controlled by two main processes: ( a ) degassing of the mantle, and ( b ) primary formation of the oceanic upper mantle and crust. Results of both processes may jointly occur.

Abstract. Sub-Recent ostracod valves of Bradleytriebella lineata (Victor & Fernando, 1981) were recorded in Nahal Bokek only in 2008 but not during subsequent surveys in 2010 and 2013. Nahal Bokek, a stream entering the Dead Sea from its western escarpment, represents the species’ single record in Israel, far away from its main Afrotropical and South to East Asia distribution. The temporary colonization of Nahal Bokek by B. lineata probably resulted from the suitability of the thermal stream waters for occupation and the subsequent termination of the population only six days after the collection of the sub-Recent valves during a flood on 24 October 2008. The preceding flood on 30 February 2008 restricts the period of possible stream inhabitation by B. lineata to a duration of eight months. Thus, the record of sub-Recent valves of B. lineata in Nahal Bokek represents an exceptional example of short-term occupation of a hydrologically dynamic flood-controlled water body by a species far away from its main geographical distribution. The recognition of Nahal Bokek as a stream fed mainly by thermal waters shows that the documentation of the abiotic habitat characteristics is a prerequisite for the understanding of the occurrence of a species outside its proper range of distribution.

Three major factors must be concomitantly assessed in order to extract relevant structural information from the surface of biological material at high resolution (2-3nm).Procedures based on chemical fixation and dehydration in graded solvent series seem inappropriate when aiming for TEM-like resolution. Cells inevitably shrink up to 30-70% of their initial volume during gehydration; important surface components e.g. glycoproteins may be lost. These problems may be circumvented by preparation techniques based on cryofixation. Freezedrying and freeze-substitution followed by critical point drying yields improved structural preservation in TEM. An appropriate preservation of dimensional integrity may be achieved by freeze-drying at - 85° C. The sample shrinks and may partially collapse as it is warmed to room temperature for subsequent SEM study. Observations at low temperatures are therefore a necessary prerequisite for high fidelity SEM. Compromises however have been unavoidable up until now. Aldehyde prefixation is frequently needed prior to freeze drying, rendering the sample resistant to treatment with distilled water.

Twelve trainable mentally retarded children were given six weeks of instruction in the use of adjectives, polars, and locative prepositions. Specially prepared Language Master cards constituted the program. Posttests indicated that children in the older chronological age group earned significantly higher scores than those in the younger group. Children in the younger group made significant increases in scores, particularly in learning prepositions. A multisensory approach and active involvement in learning appeared to be major factors in achievement gains.
