The welfare and wastage of racing greyhounds is a topic of public concern. Little is published about the racing patterns of these dogs in New Zealand. The aim of this study is to describe the pattern of greyhound racing in New Zealand. Data on all race starts between 1 August 2011 and 25 March 2018 were supplied by Greyhound Racing New Zealand. A cohort was created containing dogs that had a racing career between 1 August 2013 and 31 July 2017. Data were collated within a customized Microsoft Access database from electronic records of all racing starts for every dog within the 2013–2016 racing seasons. For this cohort of racing dogs, there were 97,973 race starts across 22,277 races involving 2393 individual greyhounds. The median number of days between racing starts was 7 days (inter-quartile range (IQR): 4–10 days). The median career length was 424 days (IQR: 206–647 days) and the median number of racing starts throughout a racing career was 35 (IQR: 16–59 starts). Dogs of similar ability finished their career at a similar age.

In the Spring 2001 issue of Journal of Information Systems (JIS), Borthick et al. (2001) presented a case in which students were to query a Microsoft Access database in order to determine the mutual assurance concerning customer service for an automobile manufacturer and its local dealer network. I follow-up this case by presenting an additional teaching note to the case that develops query strategies and solutions for the case using Oracle and its SQL application, SQL-Plus.

ABSTRACT This paper provides an educational case wherein students learn how Microsoft Access (“Access”) can be used as Generalized Audit Software (“GAS”). Students export data from an Access database provided in the case that simulates a portion of the Expenditure Cycle in the Accounting Information System (“AIS”) used by the case company. Students then import the downloaded data into another Access database where Queries and a Module are used as GAS to analyze and audit the data. In the case, students assume the roles of accounts payable manager, general ledger accountant, procurement manager and internal/external auditor, thereby learning that not only auditors but also accountants and managers can use GAS. Once the students have created and executed the Access GAS procedures illustrated in the case, they are given an assignment that includes modifying a case GAS procedure, documenting GAS procedures, and recommending and implementing improvements in the case AIS based on GAS results. The case is designed to teach students general concepts for planning and performing GAS procedures and software skills in using Access as GAS. This paper is the first educational case that illustrates how Access Modules can be used as GAS.

The management of Pizza Oei-Oei Medan does not yet have a standard system in determining the best customer.m So far, this has been done randomly and without a structure in determining the best customer. Not fair to other customers. It takes a decision support system to determine the best customers who can make decisions from various alternatives and existing criteria in determining the best customers fairly. The method used is SAW (Simple Additive Weighting). SAW is a method that can determine the weight value for each attribute, then proceed with a ranking process that will select the best alternative from a number of alternatives. SAW method can be implemented to find out the best customers based on the criteria and weights that are determined correctly. This research is to determine the best customers at Pizza Oei-Oei Medan. The system is built with Visual Basic Studio programming language with Microsoft Access database.
